Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

They are for old ladies.

RandomMess · 11/07/2024 18:15

I have some and they get worn!

Was hard work tracking them down.

usernother · 11/07/2024 18:15

No!! And I say that as an old lady.

WhereAreWeNow · 11/07/2024 18:18

I've got 2 dress slips and I wear them with dresses that are v clingy or low cut or liable to fly open (wrap dresses). I think they're great. Not sure why more women don't wear them.

elQuintoConyo · 11/07/2024 18:18

I made some as I couldn't find any in the shops! Dresses and skirts are so bloody see-through in the sun! So I got my sewing machine out <shows age>

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/07/2024 18:20

No.

I’ve not seen one for at least 25 years.

When I first started working in elderly care they were a thing but not seen one for a long, long time.

Unless you count the brightly coloured 50s style ones.

spriots · 11/07/2024 18:20

I avoided them on principle for many years as my mum went on and on about needing to wear one. But I reluctantly admit she is right and dresses and skirts do hang better

Crinklycrisp · 11/07/2024 18:20

I have one I sometimes wear under certain dresses. I am quite an old lady though.

JustPleachy · 11/07/2024 18:21

I always wear one with dress or skirt. M&S still sell them.

Izzynohopanda · 11/07/2024 18:22

Used to wear petticoats as a teenager, and I have couple of dresses that come with slips. . Apart from that, no I don’t wear them.

Wasywasydoodah · 11/07/2024 18:24

So lovely and warm on the winter! I have one and you’re inspiring me to get different lengths!

thedevilinablackdress · 11/07/2024 18:24

Baffled by folk saying that haven't seen them for years.Literally in any M&S

And I appreciate that you may not have been in the M&S lingerie department, but it does kind of indicate that it's not a niche product

Darkdiamond · 11/07/2024 18:25

Why are they such an 'old woman' thing though? Nobody sees them and they make such a difference to how well dresses look.

All you naysayers, give slips a chance! Try one like this under a clingy knitted dress or a flimsy viscose dress and you'll see the difference. You can also wear it as a nightie. www.marksandspencer.com/flexifit-cool-comfort-full-slip/p/clp60606716?color=WHITE&prevPage=srp#intid=pid_pg1pip48g2r1c1

BloodyAdultDC · 11/07/2024 18:26

WHERE ARE YOU FINDING THEM?!?

I've got maybe 4 dresses that I wear and immediately regret due to them riding up my bum crack and have only found M&S which are a bit above my budget. Any other ideas?

Droolylabradors · 11/07/2024 18:27

Suspect this thread is causing an uptick in sales of skips at Marks and Spencer. '46 sold in 48hrs'

They make me feel hot thinking about wearing one. And anything that adds bulk is likely to make you look fatter, not better surely?

Houseplanter · 11/07/2024 18:27

I still have several and would wear one if the dress/skirt needed one, or if I wanted an extra layer in the winter.

WhereAreWeNow · 11/07/2024 18:27

Exactly @thedevilinablackdress .
They're not exactly niche!

Catnipcupcakes · 11/07/2024 18:27

No. Absolutely not. Where would you even get a slip now?

Having said that I do wear light cotton trousers (that I make myself, I’m a dressmaker) under dresses though as I don’t like the feeling of bare legs or tights.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 11/07/2024 18:28

Yes, I have a knitted dress that is lovely and warm but can feel a bit scritchy, it took me ages to find a full slip (not just a petticoat) and now the dress doesn't cling and it no longer starts to feel itchy after a couple of hours.

I've got a petticoat style slip for wearing under skirts that are see through in sunlight, but I have lost so much weight that I need a couple of safety pins to stop it sliding off. When I can climb the stairs again and access the overlock machine it will only take minutes to remedy, but the staircase might as well be the north face of the Eiger just now.

You can probably get them cheaper at Asda or Primark. Or ebay?

I like the cool comfort ones from M&S and they are very thin and actually make me feel cooler

One of the things I like about wearing them is that it makes me feel more comfortable in clothing

I'm generally too cold so the extra layer is welcome. They're very thin so they don't add any bulk.

MartyFunkhouser · 11/07/2024 18:29

No! I don’t think I’ve ever worn one in my life.

My mother in law is an old lady, she wouldn’t dream of wearing one.

FloatyBoaty · 11/07/2024 18:29

Yeah I do under some dresses/ skirts. I buy the m&s ones upthread in black. I’m mid 30s and have worn them since my 20s- mainly because I like vintage clothes and wear a lot of dresses. Sometimes wear them as nighties in summer too.
