Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

Is the modern trend to wear chub rub shorts or similar shorts? I don't find those necessary or comfy.

Jojoanna · 11/07/2024 19:02

I wear them under a knitted dress ,, they are just underwear ,, stupid comment about old lady wear

SanMarzano · 11/07/2024 19:03

I’ve literally never worn/owned one, it’s not something that’s ever occurred to me. My mum doesn’t own any either. I don’t buy clothes that are see through though.

Mostlycarbon · 11/07/2024 19:04

Only under my wedding dress.

Godesstobe · 11/07/2024 19:05

I'm 70 and I wear a slip (or petticoat as my 95 year old mother calls them) under most unlined dresses and skirts. They make clothes hang better, stop them clinging and showing your underwear and even out any bumps. I get mine from M&S.
My DS in her 30s thinks they are the work of the devil and holds them in contempt, even though some of her clothes would look better with a slip IMO!

fetchacloth · 11/07/2024 19:06

I haven't worn one since I was at school in the 1970's.
My mum used to wear them though.

TeaAndStrumpets · 11/07/2024 19:08

I seem to be a very static-y person, so a slip over tights stops silk or knitted dresses clinging to every lump or bump. PP upthread mentioned woolly dress + woolly tights, agree a slip stops the velcro effect.

AtomicBlondeRose · 11/07/2024 19:10

Not an old lady and I wear them! I agree dresses sit better and feel nicer to wear. Also solves the “see through skirt” problem nicely! I always wear a camisole/vest top under a shirt or jumper too. The extra layer makes you so much sleeker.

BobnLen · 11/07/2024 19:11

I have a couple of the cool comfort M&S ones in different lengths in a nude type colour, I don't always wear them but they are very handy to have in

TemporalMechanic · 11/07/2024 19:11

I wear waist slips with all my skirts. Also have a couple of layered full-length petticoats for winter. They make a massive difference. I have one evening dress that clings very unflatteringly to my hips and thighs when worn without one, but with one the fabric flows down in a nice A-line from my waist. Looks better, feels better.

Have you got fat thighs? I presume not or you would wear them. I get big weals on my thighs if I don't. I'm short and bottom heavy so I've always had thighs that rub, chub rub shorts were a game changer. Otherwise I always had to wear full tights (even at a bmi of 21 or so).

Bathbombin · 11/07/2024 19:11

I’ve never worn one (aged mid 50s) or even considered it, although you’ve reminded me that my mother used to wear slips once in a while. I’m kind of tempted now, but I’m trying not to spend any money so it will have to wait.

I wear them if I have to , usually to stop dresses turning sheer in the sun

m I do wish, though, that I could find a proper bra slip. I have a couple of cheapies from Amazon but they are quite short

I've got 2 dress slips and I wear them with dresses that are v clingy or low cut or liable to fly open (wrap dresses). I think they're great. Not sure why more women don't wear them.

This ^^

I wear them because I find them both necessary and comfy.

Topseyt123 · 11/07/2024 19:17

I haven't worn them since my early teens. That was when my mother and grandmother told me that they were "to stop you splitting in the middle" if wearing a skirt and blouse (like for school uniform).

I hated them and ditched them as soon as I could get away with it. I'm almost 58 now and don't own any. I almost never wear dresses anyway, preferring jeans (or shorts in summer) and a t-shirt.

I wasn't even aware that they could still be bought, though admittedly I have never been interested enough to look.

Enoughwiththisshit · 11/07/2024 19:19

Darkdiamond · 11/07/2024 18:25

Why are they such an 'old woman' thing though? Nobody sees them and they make such a difference to how well dresses look.

Totally agree. I can't stand the way skirts and dresses do the static electricity creep up my legs when I'm wearing tights.

RidingMyBike · 11/07/2024 19:19

Haven't worn one since my mum stopped choosing my clothes for me!

I associate them with old ladies!

Robotnik · 11/07/2024 19:19

I'd never really known what one was until I saw a post on here similar to your OP - I thought they were some sort of Victorian garment meant to keep your immodest shins under wraps, or something.

Following the post I bought a double pack of midi-length half slips thinking I'd just wear them under my more see-through skirts, but I was an immediate convert and I pretty much don't wear skirts without one now.

rightoguvnor · 11/07/2024 19:21

I never wear skirts or dresses but still have a half-slip from the 1980s in my lingerie drawer.

Rightsraptor · 11/07/2024 19:21

I have realised I don't know if there's a difference between a slip and a petticoat - is there one? Petticoat - there's a word to conjure with.

I have a full length one in black lace and a couple of the waist to knee variety, which I often wear. They make dresses and skirts hang better and help disguise lumps and bumps. Fabric technology has greatly improved over the years and I don't find them hot or bulky.

Anyone remember the liberty bodice?

ColinMyWifeBridgerton · 11/07/2024 19:22

This probably answers your question but I'm in my 30s and had to Google what a slip is, had never heard of it before.

DreamyCyanFinch · 11/07/2024 19:24

They are not worn much anymore. It'sa shame as they are warm in winter, and keep skirts cleaner longer.I just bought my daughter a pack from M&S.
She's not an old lady, she loves them.
