Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

Yes! Lots of different length/colour ones because dresses hang SO much better - and I mean huge difference - and also being able to wear lace / sheer / interesting fabrics in an elegant way (ie not see-through).

They give an invisible extra finish to any dress/skirt outfit.

Big fan of the slip.

dontcallmelen · 11/07/2024 18:30

They don’t add bulk they are very thin & really do make a difference with how dresses especially hang, waist slips arehandy under skirts either to stop the clinging or stopping from being see through.
@BloodyAdultDC next do them not sure of price though.

FifteenAll · 11/07/2024 18:30

I haven’t worn one for 20 years at least. Thinking of getting one of those cool ones now!

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 11/07/2024 18:31

How do they work for you? I used to wear them, at DMs instructions. But they ride up and bunch around my waist. That’s why I don’t. They make sense, but don’t work.

Catnipcupcakes · 11/07/2024 18:27

No. Absolutely not. Where would you even get a slip now?

Having said that I do wear light cotton trousers (that I make myself, I’m a dressmaker) under dresses though as I don’t like the feeling of bare legs or tights.

M&S, Next, TK Maxx, John Lewis, Primark , Amazon, ASOS, etc etc etc

Underlig · 11/07/2024 18:31

I wear them under most dresses and some skirts. I have lots - some have been repurposed from other things - old silk slip dresses, for example. They make dresses hang much better.

grafittiartist · 11/07/2024 18:32

I have one- it gets worn regularly.
Some dresses and skirts don't hang properly without.

ginasevern · 11/07/2024 18:33

I'm 67 and haven't worn a slip (or petticoat as they were known) since I was around 12 years old - which would've been 1969. Skirts were right up to your knickers back then so I don't see how you could wear a slip even if you wanted to. Then in the 80's the whole petticoat thing died a death, except for some older women.

Helenloveslee4eva · 11/07/2024 18:33

I do and I’m not old.
clothes hang better. And a lot of today’s dresses really need that.

fluffiphlox · 11/07/2024 18:33

I have a knitted dress for the winter. It looks tons better with a half-slip.

RockyRogue1001 · 11/07/2024 18:34

I wear one if I'm in a light colour and/or a skirt or dress with v thin material

Timeisnevertimeatall · 11/07/2024 18:34

Always wear one under certain dresses/skirts. I have full length ones of different lengths iyswim. I also buy from m&s, been wearing them years, am definitely not an old lady, just hate skirts sticking to my tights or legs, or fabric that's a bit thin or see through.

MulberryBushRoundabout · 11/07/2024 18:35

I have a couple. Useful under the odd dress which is a bit see through. Also useful in the winter, I wear a lot of jersey dresses which rode up when worn with thick tights, a slip stops that happening.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/07/2024 18:35

I do. Never had to when dresses and skirts were routinely lined. You can buy them in M&S, they're not some rare thing!

I wear skirts and dresses all the time for work, and they hang so much better with a slip underneath.

hennybeans · 11/07/2024 18:37

Yes! I had a dress that was perpetually full of static. I googled and apparently it can be caused by the fabric rubbing against your legs. Bought a slip at M&S, problem solved.

I wear a dress every day and now I wear the slip under most of them. It really doesn’t add bulk or make me hot, but it does make every dress look so much nicer, smooth, no knicker lines, dress falls straight when I stand up, can’t see through the fabric. It’s a revelation.

bergamotorange · 11/07/2024 18:37

Theya re really useful and make clothes look better.

PuddlesPityParty · 11/07/2024 18:38

Wait what do you mean by it changes the way dresses hang / makes them look better 🫣

EdithGrantham · 11/07/2024 18:38

I wear waist slips rather than full ones as the full slips never cover my bust properly so seem a bit silly. They stop dresses that aren't in heavy fabrics from clinging to my legs and just make them hang better. I've been wearing them since I was a lot younger, early 20s probably to start with when I had some white gypsy skirts and I didn't want everyone seeing my pants. Now in my mind 30s so still not an old lady!

CharlotteRumpling · 11/07/2024 18:39

I wear them. Mine are from M and S. Some of my summer dresses are very thin cotton.

Nosummerontheagenda · 11/07/2024 18:39

Never even thought of such a garment since I was 12.

GoodVibesHere · 11/07/2024 18:39

No I don't wear a petticoat! I'm not Mrs Doubtfire.

They're of the time when old ladies used to wear a see-through plasticky head scarf in the rain and pulled a tartan shopping trolley along behind them.

sugarbyebye · 11/07/2024 18:40

I've only worn them in a riot grrl way, I didn't realise that was their proper function. I'm not really one for underwear as outerwear with army boots anymore, so I might start wearing them under my floral dresses and sensible cardigan.

Timeisnevertimeatall · 11/07/2024 18:41

PuddlesPityParty · 11/07/2024 18:38

They obviously aren't like spanx etc, they don't slim you, but they do skim over your underwear so (depending on the fabric and fit) it looks less lumpy, less VPL, etc. The dress sits properly because it's not snagging on underwear or staticy skin/tights.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 11/07/2024 18:41

I’ve always worn slips with skirts and dresses, they make an enormous difference to how your clothes hang, prevent static and cling and smooth out your body.
I really don’t understand the negativity about them!
