Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

I wear them. Make clothes look so much better.

WHERE ARE YOU FINDING THEM?!?

I've got maybe 4 dresses that I wear and immediately regret due to them riding up my bum crack and have only found M&S which are a bit above my budget. Any other ideas?

EBay. New obviously. They have loads.

Coffeerum · 11/07/2024 19:27

Slips are just totally pointless to me, other than for one lovely but much too sheer white dress I have.

So not that pointless then 😄

Iloveeverycat · 11/07/2024 19:28

I do wear a skirt slip when wearing a dress or skirt without a lining. There is nothing worse than sitting down at a meal, wedding or cinema and then you stand up and your dress is stuck to your legs. I am not old.

RobinEllacotStrike · 11/07/2024 19:28

I sometimes wear one in cooler months. For warmth. I'd never wear one in the summer unless it was purposefully designed for the dress.

I'm 57 though so probably "old".

Many dresses have built in slips so I do think they are still worn & relevant

Cami or slip dresses exist in their own right.

Seems women prefer tight shapewear these days (not me).

StoatofDisarray · 11/07/2024 19:29

I think they're great and if I knew where to get decent ones I would. Especially for maxi dresses!

Can you recommend any OP?

rainbowbee · 11/07/2024 19:29

I have one. It took ages to find. It's for under a mid length winter skirt that is see-through if the sun is behind you. It does feel a bit old-lady!

olympicsrock · 11/07/2024 19:31

I have previously worn a control slip ( when I was a size 14-16 post pregnancy) Smooths out the lumps and bumps . Not as cool and comfortable though. Now at size 18 and 46 comfort is everything .

Flossflower · 11/07/2024 19:31

I am an old lady and I haven’t worn one since I was a child. I rember they looked awful when they hung below clothes. There were also the synthetic ones that had loads of static in. Perhaps we show more of our natural body shape these days plus we wear trousers a lot more. I do like lined clothes though. I make a lot of clothes and these are lined and have pockets.

3peassuit · 11/07/2024 19:33

I do if there is no lining in a dress. They make the garment hang better and smooth bra and pant seams.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 11/07/2024 19:40

I have 2 and I wear them OP. In winter they make my skirts not cling and look weird ehen om walking around. Also they're great for under transparent material.
I've always had them. Admittedly I'm past the first flush of youth (54) but my teenage daughters both borrow my under slips as well !!

LoobyDoop2 · 11/07/2024 19:41

spriots · 11/07/2024 18:20

I avoided them on principle for many years as my mum went on and on about needing to wear one. But I reluctantly admit she is right and dresses and skirts do hang better

Haha exactly this! I wish we could think of a new name for them so we can pretend we aren’t turning into our mums.

HandyDandyNotebookWanker · 11/07/2024 19:48

I wear them with every skirt and dress (and I wear skirts and dresses 80% of the time) - I just get the cool comfort ones from M&S, or get them from Amazon. Absolutely baffled that some people can't find them - they seem pretty readily available to me! They make things hang better and stop static cling with tights. They also provide a bit of extra coverage for wrap dresses that want to expose everything when you sit down Blush

Theadventuresofdiscomouse · 11/07/2024 19:52

Matalan do a few at half the price of the M&S ones and are decent quality.

TinkyWinkyLala · 11/07/2024 19:59

I find the skirt part of a slip, or a petticoat, always rides up under my skirt/dress and ends up bunching around my waist. Does that mean I'm wearing it wrong, have the wrong size or am just very static-y?!

PrincessMee · 11/07/2024 20:01

I guess this thread explains why we see so many badly dressed women out there now although you don't need a slip with black leggings and a t shirt of an awkward length 😂

WhereAreWeNow · 11/07/2024 20:02

This thread is an eye opener. I'm amazed that so many women have never even heard of a slip while some of us wear them all the time.

As for them being 'old lady' underwear, I remember a scene in the film Volver when Penelope Cruz takes off her dress and is wearing a black slip and it looks insanely sexy. Nothing 'old lady' about a slinky little black mini dress under your clothes.

saturnspinkhoop · 11/07/2024 20:04

I have petticoat slips. I don’t feel very fashionable putting one on, but I find that skirts and dresses are often a bit see through, even when lined.

Chemise is an alternative word.

Or, just think of them as slips but never admit to your mum that she was right. Ever! Grin

I have kept it really quiet!

Hate admitting to my mum that she was right

I agree - that’s how I feel when I’m getting dressed or undressed in a slip, there is something quite sexy about them… And I’m as far removed from sexy as it gets!

RosesAndHellebores · 11/07/2024 20:13

I often wear a slip, always with tights and always in the winter. They make dresses hang so much better.

M&S do super ones. They have racks of them.

Balletdreamer · 11/07/2024 20:20

I do, and I’m 40s. They make clothes hang so much nicer, esp skirts that are cheaply made and not lined. Less clingy. I have a few slip dresses I bought in H&M years ago and wish they’d sell them again, they’re really cute!

Metempsychosis · 11/07/2024 20:24

The current trend for bias cut satin skirts are a classic example of a garment that really benefits from a slip to smooth out the silhouette. Full length only - two elasticated waists on top of each other is asking for trouble. Of course that does mean you can't flash a well chosen half inch of midriff, but I think slip wearers and midriff flashers are mutually exclusive.
