Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

I have several M&S ones in different lengths and colours (the ones that were linked above) and almost never wear a dress or skirt without one.

I'm not an old lady just yet but clothes hang better with a slip. They are also useful with a skirt and top to prevent having my bare flabby stomach on display if I stretch upwards.

Ithoughtitwasyou · 11/07/2024 18:42

I wear slips because as others have said, dresses and skirts hang so much better.
I also wear the 50's style net petticoats under full skirted dresses and skirts when we go social dancing. They make me feel fabulous!

Makemydaypunk · 11/07/2024 18:42

There is nothing like a properly lined skirt, when I used to wear ‘office clothes’ in the 90’s skirts were often so well made and lined, they hung so much better, didn’t cling to your legs or tights so yes I agree a half slip under a skirt makes it look so much better of you can’t buy one already lined.

WhatTimeDoYouCallThis · 11/07/2024 18:42

I'm wearing one now! So many summer things are unflatteringly see-through otherwise, and they stop cling, big fan.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/07/2024 18:44

I do, all the time. M&S cool comfort for me. They are lovely to wear. I wear them on their own (at home, not outside) and sometimes wear them to bed.

I have them in all colours, various lengths, and love them dearly! Grin

fantasmasgoria1 · 11/07/2024 18:44

Nah I have never bought or worn one. The only people I have even known wear one was my grandmother!

greengreyblue · 11/07/2024 18:45

I still have a black mini one ( I’m 53) but can’t remember when I last wore it. They do serve a purpose and I’d probably get more use from full slip as you say they do give a nice line under clothes.

Overthebow · 11/07/2024 18:46

I’m mid thirties and didn’t even know these were a thing. I think I’ve heard of them before but though it was more of a Victorian era thing.

PrimalLass · 11/07/2024 18:47

I do - always

BloodyAdultDC · 11/07/2024 18:26

WHERE ARE YOU FINDING THEM?!?

I've got maybe 4 dresses that I wear and immediately regret due to them riding up my bum crack and have only found M&S which are a bit above my budget. Any other ideas?

Amazon - for a start

Betsylee · 11/07/2024 18:48

I've 2 knee-length ones and a couple of waist ones, I always wear them with dresses unless it's very hot. They stop fabric clinging and give a smooth siliouette, also add warmth when it's colder.
I have a cream and a white one, both from M & S, I don't wear the waist ones very much.

Redshoeblueshoe · 11/07/2024 18:49

I recently bought one from TKMaxx, it was a River Island one. I got it to go under a dress I had just bought. The dress material was far too thin.

PrimalLass · 11/07/2024 18:49

They make me feel hot thinking about wearing one. And anything that adds bulk is likely to make you look fatter, not better surely?

No the opposite. They make dresses look 100% better and the dress clings to the slip not you.

wilteddandelion · 11/07/2024 18:49

My first thought was "what's a slip?"😆

TorroFerney · 11/07/2024 18:50

They used to have them for under cullottes - they were a sight. Does no one else refer to them as an underskirt - that's what they were called in our house.

Yes, we always called them underskirts.

Ineedanewsofa · 11/07/2024 18:52

No because I normally wear chub rub shorts under dresses in the summer and I don’t want 3 layers on! I do have a couple of strapless control type slips that get used under clothes that I think are a bit too sheer

seadreams · 11/07/2024 18:53

I’m 25 and I decided to buy some last week in M&S. Though I was slightly horrified that I was turning into my mother and texted her to inform her as such!

Suspect this thread is causing an uptick in sales of skips at Marks and Spencer. '46 sold in 48hrs'

No not at all, they make everything just hang in a much more flattering way. I saw a girl wearing a t shirt material dress today and personally I wouldn't like so much of my cellulite to be visible through my clothes and know that a slip would have made it look so much better. It definitely doesn't add bulk as the material is so light and slinky.

As a separate point, why does writing m&s turn it into a hyperlink!!! Do they have a secret (or not so secret) deal with mumsnet?

SaltyGod · 11/07/2024 18:55

Yes, I wear them and am definitely not an old lady.

Clothes hang better, and I’m not exposing my underwear in lighter coloured dresses. I have many and do wear them as nighties too. Or if it’s really hot, I just wear the slip around the house with nothing else.

In winter they can add some warmth.

I buy mine at M&S, John Lewis, online. Some cotton and some silk.

antoinetta · 11/07/2024 18:56

I'm not 'old' and I wear them sometimes.

I just said on the 'trend' thread that I remember a thread a while ago where a few of us said we wore slips. Marks and Spencer were the favoured brand, I recall. For an extra layer, and warmth, in the winter. I also have some to go under slightly sheer dress fabric, though mostly those slips came with the dress.

antoinetta · 11/07/2024 18:57

I've worn some of mine as nightdresses too @SaltyGod

starfishmummy · 11/07/2024 18:58

I wear them, waist slips nit full ones. I guess I an an old lady anyway so...
Good for summer dresses that are a bit diaphonous and also I hate the way some dresses/skirts wrap and cling my legs without a slip.

wheresmyshoe · 11/07/2024 18:59

Yes! So few things are properly lined that if you want them to hang well and without static a slip (full or half) is essential. For anyone who thinks it's old lady or outdated try it, I feel like a minx when my dresses slink across my body thanks to a slip!
