Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

WHERE ARE YOU FINDING THEM?!?

I've got maybe 4 dresses that I wear and immediately regret due to them riding up my bum crack and have only found M&S which are a bit above my budget. Any other ideas?

Amazon sell them!

Caaarrrl · 11/07/2024 20:31

I have 2 half slips and a full slip that I wear regularly. They stop the awful static from tights in winter.

Darkdiamond · 11/07/2024 18:25

Why are they such an 'old woman' thing though? Nobody sees them and they make such a difference to how well dresses look.

It's a standard MN response when the poster can't think of anything intelligent to say.

I've always worn slips under unlined skirts or dresses. M&S has vast quantities of them.

Caaarrrl · 11/07/2024 20:32

The half slips were from matalan and full one from Boyes which sells everything anyone could ever possibly want but they might only be in the North?

Businessflake · 11/07/2024 20:34

Since so many clothes are now unlined and made of see through fabric they’re pretty much a necessity if you wear a lot of dresses.

It’s a shame most do the women in my office haven’t realised this. Or maybe they don’t care their clothes are totally see through.

Have you got fat thighs? I presume not or you would wear them. I get big weals on my thighs if I don't. I'm short and bottom heavy so I've always had thighs that rub, chub rub shorts were a game changer. Otherwise I always had to wear full tights (even at a bmi of 21 or so).

Yep. Love my chub rubs. I've been very slim in the past and still suffered.

I guess this thread explains why we see so many badly dressed women out there now although you don't need a slip with black leggings and a t shirt of an awkward length 😂

I'm glad you said that. I was just thinking it.

StoatofDisarray · 11/07/2024 20:41

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle yeah I was thinking the same thing about VPL.

JohnnyAndTheDead · 11/07/2024 20:50

I always wear them with dresses! Smoothing, stop clinging, make things hang better. What's not to like?!

JohnnyAndTheDead · 11/07/2024 20:51

The ageism on this thread is pretty depressing. MNHQ don't care much about it though.

henlake7 · 11/07/2024 21:00

I didnt realiese they were still a big thing TBH, you dont see them in shops so much anymore.
I have plenty of skirts and dresses but never felt the need for a slip (although I dont really buy anything that might be clingy or see through so maybe thats why!).

Getonwitit · 11/07/2024 21:02

It is such a shame to see a woman in a beautiful dress but no slip underneath, a dress clinging to your inner thighs as you walk is not a good sight.

PinkTonic · 11/07/2024 21:03

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 20:41

I'm glad you said that. I was just thinking it.

Same. They’ll be the cohort who think nothing needs ironing either.

I don’t wear them with everything, but I have half and full slips in various lengths in black and nude. I think of them in the same category as a strapless or halter neck bra or low backed body or certain types of pants. Essential for some clothing to look its best.

PuddlesPityParty · 11/07/2024 21:03

Timeisnevertimeatall · 11/07/2024 18:41

They obviously aren't like spanx etc, they don't slim you, but they do skim over your underwear so (depending on the fabric and fit) it looks less lumpy, less VPL, etc. The dress sits properly because it's not snagging on underwear or staticy skin/tights.

Ty !

WeRateSquirrels · 11/07/2024 21:06

I wear them in winter, can’t stand the feeling of dress catching on tights. They’re really not that niche or difficult to get hold of.

sanityisamyth · 11/07/2024 21:06

HaveNoIdeaForAName · 11/07/2024 18:14

They are for old ladies.

This! Not even sure my mother has one!

Elodie9 · 11/07/2024 21:06

I love a slip, old school here, reminds me of the gorgeous sixties movie stars !

DontYouStartMadam · 11/07/2024 21:07

Can't live without my skirt slip. Mainly because I wear a lot of tights under my dresses and the dresses will cling if I don't have the slip between them and the tights.

Citrusandginger · 11/07/2024 21:08

Funnily enough I'm wearing one today. I don't often, but as you say OP, it does improve the line of your skirt. And if like me, you are bloody minded enough to wear a summer dress because it is July - even if the weather hasn't noticed - the extra layer is a bonus.

WhereAreWeNow · 11/07/2024 21:08

Exactly @PinkTonic - I also think of them like a strapless bra or a camisole. It might not be something I wear all the time but there are some outfits that call for it.

martinemartine · 11/07/2024 21:09

I am older and do not know anyone who wears a slip. I have seen them for sale in Boyes.

Littleguggi · 11/07/2024 21:09

Wear mine every time I wear a skirt or dress, feel naked without it. Mid 30's if that makes any difference.

twentysevendresses · 11/07/2024 21:10

Yes I wear slips with dresses (I don't own any skirts but would absolutely wear one if I did )

As you say, they change the whole silhouette of an outfit. Classy 💓

sugarbyebye · 11/07/2024 21:13

are we talking about these type things? so satiny/silk, not elastane?

AtomicBlondeRose · 11/07/2024 21:14

I agree they’re quite sexy - I feel really slinky when I get undressed and I’m just in my slip! Always gets approving looks from DP too! And this is just a bog standard one - I might splash out on a lace-trimmed one…
