Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

Here is someone in dire need of a slip.

💯

I mean she is a beautiful woman with a great figure so she still looks great but a slip would really help the dress look better

Cantonet · 18/08/2024 10:48

I prefer dresses that aren't lined as then I can add my own cotton slip. As the most beautiful expensive silk dresses nearly always have awful polyester linings. Many a dress has been ruined for me because of that.
I often cut the synthetic linings out of skirts & add my own cotton petticoat.

I generally prefer cotton however for petticoats I find they bunch up badly. Do you not?

Cantonet · 18/08/2024 12:42

They don't seem to.
Maybe because the skirts are mainly flouncy synthetic types.

GoldFrame · 18/08/2024 14:37

But the bias cut satin ones, which I love, really need a slip to look . They are everywhere just now. Lovely, but unforgiving without a slip!

Wheredidileavemycarkeys · 18/08/2024 14:48

No. Absolutely not. Where would you even get a slip now?

You can get them from Marks

I wear one to avoid subjecting people to the silhouette of my legs when in direct sunlight.
Didn't think it was a particularly contentious or unusual thing to do lol.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/08/2024 14:50

Absolutely yes if a dress is quite sheer, or likely to be see-thru in certain light. As others have said they also help thin fabric dresses hang better. I have a few in different lengths to suit different dresses (yes, mainly from Marks). Love a slip!

As a separate point, why does writing m&s turn it into a hyperlink!!! Do they have a secret (or not so secret) deal with mumsnet?

I edited my last post about 7 times trying to get rid of it 😆

What's annoying is that you can't even see it on preview.

100% agree.

The last few years' oversized tiered milkmaid styles are more or less fine without a slip. But the newer more fitted shirt dress styles sometimes need them and this season's bias cut satin slip skirts always do, unless you're a very toned size 6 and wearing them with a centimetre of midriff on display - even then you need to be really careful about your choice of knickers.

I have fallen head over heels in love with this slip from Brora!

I can't afford it, well I can technically, but not without pain and I really shouldn't right now😢

I need someone to talk me out of it!

Think of the PITA of hand washing it using wool and silk-specific laundry liquid every time.

Then think of shoving your old faithful M&S synthetic slip in the washing machine.

Think of the poor little silk worms. Their sweet little exploited faces?

I hand-wash nothing. My machine has wool and delicates cycles and I don't use don't use special detergent. Not many synthetics in my wardrobe.

🤣🤣

Ok that's good. Really good! Because I loathe having to hand wash or wanting to wear something but it's dirty and I can't wash it because I don't have the specific detergent! Then the money buying the specific liquid.

The sad little silkworm faces didn't work quite as well though but your first reason mostly covered it😄

But it is pretty! Maybe it'll go down by 50% in some random sale and they'll still have it in my size (fat chance).

It is gorgeous however it says you need to dry clean. That alone is enough to put me off.

It's silk. You can put silk in the washing machine.

Sandwichgen · 18/08/2024 23:27

Has anyone ever found a ‘trouser slip’? I have bought a linen suit, but the jacket is lined and the trousers not - So of course they appear slightly different. It miffs me because the men’s equivalent suit has both halves lined, of course

I’m hoping to get them lined if I can do it without selling a kidney. But Amazon has under
-trousers if I can call them that. I’m just not sure of the quality

In case you are nervous to do so you can wash by hand in cold water. Many things that state 'dry clean only' actually can be washed, the only things you really can't wash are things like tailoring with interfacings etc. but a silk slip can probably be washed just fine.

GoldFrame · 19/08/2024 05:06

A trouser slip would be great!

Isn't that what the shorts/culotte slips are for?

Culottes slips are short though - so my trousers would change colour half-way down

I know right?!

I stumbled upon it's beautiful visage a few weeks ago whilst searching for a pretty dress slip via Ebay. I always back up finds on Ebay with Google Lens and THIS came up😍

I would like a Queen wearing it, but really cannot justify it, sadly.

What about possibly, long johns?😬

I'm a defunct thyroid so used to be freezing all the time and I had several pairs that went all the way down to my ankles. My sister picked them up for me from Lidls or maybe it was Aldi I think.

The issue is you'd want lighter ones and they tend not to be silky and have elasticated waists so may not be a smooth fit at the waist, but I used to wear them under my combat trousers when going to work.
