I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I love the socks thing! So much comfier.

mountaingoatsarehairy · 07/06/2024 13:42

@HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf

what are the M&S cropped frayed jeans ? Also a shortie and can’t find them on the website

Hidinginbed · 07/06/2024 13:43

Yes I thought side partings were old fashioned and centre partings were cool? Has it switched back again?!

I have done the sock thing (aged 48) for dog walks etc but not for actually in the gym as my ankles get too hot so it’s trainer liners for me still when I’m actually working out. Plus you get a stupid tan line in running gear if you wear longer socks!

My problem is I like baggy jumpers but if I wear them with baggy/wide jeans I look like a mess… how do you wear oversized jumpers if you don’t wear skinnies?

Peacelily001 · 07/06/2024 13:34

@henlake7 where do you get your parachute pants from please?

As Im not at all trendy I mainly buy them from Primark....they have a really nice range of summer ones and heavier winter ones.

I just cant get behind mom jeans though....even if they become the only style to wear!
I tried some on for the first time the other day and thought I looked like Marty McFly from Back to the Future!!LOL

I ended up buying a lovely pair of wide leg ones instead.

tothesea · 07/06/2024 13:47

@LividPink ’has your cat died?..cause your trousers are at half mast!

LividPink · 07/06/2024 13:48

@tothesea ohhh, as if the trousers were a flag? I guess that makes some sense... You've addressed a thirty year bafflement 🤓

Maising · 07/06/2024 13:51

I feel enlightened now too thanks @LividPink

@Hidinginbed I have wondered the same. A baggy top and bottom just makes me look unkempt.

Just checked in with v on trend 19 yr old DD who says side parts are in, but if I try it I’ll probably look like I’m old fashioned rather than up to date.

And that is the conundrum with second time round fashion: can you pull off bang on trend or will you look like you’re dated and never moved on from first time round. Urghh!

GardenGnomad · 07/06/2024 13:59

Oh wow I just came on to say centre parting but it maybe I'm now behind on that!!!

Ilovemyshed · 07/06/2024 14:02

Oh.

I wear skinnies, trainer socks and have a side parting.

FFS.

Ilovemyshed · 07/06/2024 14:06

But perhaps side partings are back in. I can't keep up. TBH not sure I care either.

TammyOne · 07/06/2024 14:10

I don’t want to cause a S&B riot but… I don’t think anyone really looks good in wide leg trousers. Or at least not the ones I see around. Really tailored Kathryn Hepburn ones, yes, if tall and slim and basically Kathryn Hepburn.
So I am ditching all my wide legs (especially the cropped ones) and going back to slim trousers or flares.

WayOutOfLine · 07/06/2024 14:13

@TammyOne I wear either flares/boot cut or straight leg jeans. I don't wear any wide-legged trousers as they don't suit me.

There is a middle fence between tight pale blue skinnies and wide-legged white linen trousers, and that's where I'm aiming to sit (somewhat uncomfortably!)

henlake7 · 07/06/2024 14:16

Plenty of people look good in wide legged trousers.....it just depends on your size and body shape (and how you are styling them).
Personally I thought I looked the dogs bollox in the size 8 wide legged jeans I bought the other day, pretty sure I would of hated them when I was a size 22 though!
For me its slim trousers that dont work. They just squeeze my calves and hang really weird.

LimeCookie · 07/06/2024 14:19

I saw the most hilarious thing the other day - apparently to the younger folk we instantly age ourselves by where we wear our sunglasses! Apparently us oldies wear them pushed right up to the top of nose when they should in fact be placed slightly down our nose. I keep laughing about it but then also consider starting to do it 😂

MidnightPatrol · 07/06/2024 14:22

MaryFuckingFerguson · 07/06/2024 12:06

I’ve binned all my skinnies in favour of wide legs.

Bought Birkenstocks clogs.

I tried the leggings and longer socks at the gym but my legs looked like big hams. As do everyone’s. It’s so unflattering I had to go back to my trainer socks.

Binned!!!

I’ve bought several pairs of wide leg trousers but I can’t bring myself to bin my skinnies, my only trouser style for a decade…

MaryFuckingFerguson · 07/06/2024 12:41

I wore some really old Gazelles the other day and my son’s gf commented on my trendiness. They’re back in. Apparently.

Yea I seen my 13 year old very "cool" nephew in a pair the other day. I was pleasantly surprised!

MermaidEyes · 07/06/2024 14:29

I still love my black skinnies with oversized tee, leather jacket and converse and still gets the thumbs up from the teens. Recently bought some high waisted bootcut jeans, 16 year old dd promptly said my arse looked 'fit' in them and asked where to buy them 😆

LividPink · 07/06/2024 13:41

The sock thing.

Vile. I can't even contemplate it. If someone wore ankle socks with shorter trousers in the 90s we'd laugh for a week and call them Michael Jackson or ask if their cat had died (relevance of cat's health unclear, but it was A Thing)

This. I can't stand it. Looks frumpy, I just don't get it. I'm late 50's though, so I won't be following this trend. I loved fashion in the 80s/90s/ early naughties, but the style & quality of clothes has really diminished in my eyes. I'm short, so big wide trousers / jeans do not work for me either. I'll stick to what suits me!

I still have a few skinnies in and I will never get rid of them.
They will always be the most practical dog walking style, esp for wet weather!
(style will only get you so far when its cold, wet and muddy outside!).😁

Im 50s and thank the fashion gods that high socks are now a thing.
I have one fat ankle thanks to oedema and high socks hides the difference nicely!😅

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2024 14:37

@LimeCookie you’ve reminded me about sunglasses shape. I still favour big squarish glasses but now it’s all about the letterbox shaped oblong..,,

It was "has your budgie died" round my way... because you were flying the flag (your trousers) at half mast Grin

Oldermum84 · 07/06/2024 14:37

Nothing. I don't care.
