I now need to find a pair of black trainers/plimsolls, and then I am sorted for holidays and for the foreseeable. Looking for recommendations. I have very tricky feet. Can’t wear Novestas, or Converse. I love Shoes Like Pottery, but can’t get black ones locally and have left it too late to order for holidays. I also like Moonstar, but same problem. I nearly tried on the Pras plimsolls in Toast today but made myself walk away.

Allbirds might be worth a try if you haven't given them a go before @ScottishMouse Their tree runners work for my difficult feet. They used to refund if you didn't get on with them, even if you've already worn them (I'm not sure if that's still the case)

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2024 13:59

Thanks for the trainer recs @puddles75 and @BettinaInDenmark. I thought I might get to pop out of work today to have a look but too busy.
I ordered some dresses to choose one from for holidays, and they arrived yesterday. The new black crinkle one is just too heavy for warm weather, and a little large around the middle in size M, not as flattering as the crinkle pinafore. The stone linen vneck one is great, really flattering fit, but a bit see-through to feel comfortable in. Plus, not a very practical colour. The new onyx stripe linen vneck dress is great, and I was set to keep that until I tried the Asawa check linen sale one that I threw into my order at the last minute, not expecting much. It is great! I wonder why there are so many sizes still available. So the onyx stripe linen one is also going back, but it’s on my wishlist should it appear in a sale at some point.

How are the arm holes on the Asawa dress? it looks so nice, but I dislike arm holes that are so deep that they are bra-showing.
I have already ordered the Asawa trousers, hoping they are a good fit on me.

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2024 14:08

You might not like it in that case @BettinaInDenmark. The armholes definitely show some bra. I don’t mind that personally, I will just choose the bra I wear under it carefully.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 09/07/2024 14:17

I love my Asawa shirt, I’ve probably worn that more than any other top this year. I have found it creases quite easily but quickly rectified with an iron.

My Decho cap arrived yesterday and, annoyingly, that was all creased in the bag, but I think it’s going to be useful for dog walking, especially as it should be waterproof.
I also ordered the sale Olive oil side pocket trousers , expecting them to be too much like last years Fenugreek trousers, but they're really comfortable and probably enough of a different colour so I think I’ll keep those too.

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2024 14:21

Yes, the dress arrived very creased @Theteapotsbrokenspout So much so that I had to give it an iron to see what it was really like. That worries me for packing, but hopefully the creases will fall out with wear.

Tried and failed with this. It has a hint of the raglan about the sleeve cut, I couldn't lift my arm without the whole body rising up.
Lovely material, great blue but not for me.

TosstTastic · 09/07/2024 20:19

Also going back the Asawa trousers and dress.
I need that V neck, else I morph into a mighty mountain of fabric. The trousers were just a little too PJ like and my check, dropped crotch with a hint of wool in a similar pattern are still going strong.

I did really like the idea of the full Asawa family, such great fabric and endlessly versatile as a neutral with different colours. Not to be for me!

whinsome · 09/07/2024 20:23

I tried that top as well @TosstTastic, didn't do anything for me either. I had high hopes so a bit gutted.

I thought I was done with the sale but in the last few days I seem to have ordered that Anja blouse in the reddy/orange colour, kick flare jeans and the Asawa dress (thanks to @ScottishMouse - am so easily led!!) - doubt I'll get on with the armholes but willing to take a punt.

TosstTastic · 09/07/2024 20:23

I need to get braver in the shops. I've been near three in the last three months and not actually tried anything on in real life. I'm not longer the waif I was, it's all changed in the last few years,so I've lost my way a bit.
Incredible how normal on line has become and yet we all hate the waste of ordering multiple sizes.
Tell me your in store tales of positive sales.

whinsome · 09/07/2024 20:28

I'm feeling similar. My 'nearest' store is Edinburgh which is 2 hours away but have decided I'm just going to make a day (or wknd) of it and go to try stuff on. That way I'll at least know what sizes to order when the sales come. I hate all the waste, and all the money of mine they have tied up processing refunds.

I do however love the few sales purchases I have kept and I'm not sure I would have chosen them to try on in the shop ...

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2024 21:10

I had the same experience with that too @TosstTastic. I hate that cut where the arm holes meet the body too low down.
To be honest, I have no idea if the Asawa dress flatters me much either, but it is wafty and fits over my boobs and is a great neutral, so those things all make it a winner for me.

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2024 21:20

@whinsome even though I live very near the Edinburgh store, I have never managed to be organised enough to try everything I like early in the season so I am ready for sales shopping. I often order things in the sale that I have not previously tried (or maybe haven’t even considered previously) so have to gamble on sizes. Or I order things I have tried in store but can’t remember what size I tried! And the worst - I order things I tried and weren’t any good, forgetting they were no good. I should try to keep a list with notes on sizing and what I like/don’t like.

whinsome · 09/07/2024 21:26

Oh, I know. I will be the same, I'm sure, but it might help cross a few things off the list at least. Maybe! And it's always nice to have an excuse to potter around Edinburgh for a wee bit.

ScottishMouse · 09/07/2024 22:26

Well I spoke too soon about the Asawa dress. Just tried it on for my teenage daughter and my husband and they both looked mildly horrified. My husband hardly ever has anything to say about what I wear, but he said it looked “matronly”!!! Even if I thought he was totally wrong, I wouldn’t be able to get that comment out of my head ever when wearing it.
So I am now standing over an empty suitcase and a floor full of discarded clothes. I am really having a hard time liking what I look like at the moment in any clothes, and packing for summer weather is just quite depressing. I know I should be delighted we are taking a trip, but I just want to put on my pjs and retire to the sofa instead.

Snowyowl78 · 10/07/2024 05:51

Big restock alert!

@ScottishMouse oh I’m sorry you’re feeling deflated, if you really love the dress I would ignore them. It looks so comfortable for the heat. Where are you off to?

AvaGardens · 10/07/2024 06:38

Just came on to say RESTOCK, but @Snowyowl78 got there first!

@ScottishMouse how frustrating, sorry to hear that, I'm sure many on here recognise that feeling. I for one never feel entirely comfortable in hot weather clothes, too many niggles.
My solution is to wear old favourites, even if its the same thing every other day.. as you won't know anyone where you're going, enjoy precious time away, and have faith the frustration will pass.

AvaGardens · 10/07/2024 06:44

Forgot to add.. on a surprise holiday in Italy last year I felt so irritable with my weight and scar on my neck from recent op, I was making it miserable for my husband, not on purpose but he felt my discomfort.
He suggested I wear my pretty Toast nightdresses as dresses!
It worked.
I wore very light short sleeve shirts, open, on top to hide bra straps, it was a light loose and stylish solution, when it got cooler I wore larger T shirts on top and voila.. they looked like skirts underneath.

A very minimal wardrobe 😃

AFingerofFudge · 10/07/2024 06:52

Also arrived in to say restock!

I may have placed another^^ order Blush

My bank account is all over the place I have placed that many orders!!
Very pleased I managed to get hold of a few items that were out of stock early in the sale.

whinsome · 10/07/2024 07:34

Oh that's rubbish, @ScottishMouse As other's have said, if you love it I'd be inclined to ignore them from behind the biggest pair of sunglasses I could find!

hicat · 10/07/2024 08:15

Ditto with sale/bank account all over the place. I read someone else saying they'd made a spreadsheet and followed suit this morning heh. It helps to see how much money is due back! So. Many. Orders.

@ScottishMouse you're so not alone in feeling that way, i think @AvaGardens advice was solid. Big shirt/big sunglasses are my holiday go to's :) hope it's just a passing frustration, and hope you're going somewhere nice!

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 10/07/2024 08:18

@hicat I use a spreadsheet for my toast purchases, it helps me keep track of everything I’ve bought and my returns. Especially useful as I use 2 credit cards as well.
Also I can look back over the last few years and see how much I’ve spent Blush .

faustina · 10/07/2024 08:23

@ScottishMouse - sending you big sympathy. I have been there too - more times than I'd wish. I also find it really hard when it's suddenly very hot/cold as I seem to need time to get my head around it before being comfortable in my skin. Could you perhaps just take things you already love, and then maybe buy something lovely while you're there? I hope you have a wonderful time despite the wrong answers from your dd and dh

I've also done another order - some Emma tees, that jersey striped shirt, the lounge tee and an incense holder (which I do actually need!). I've very wisely stopped myself from ordering the trousers which didn't fit properly last time I ordered them - it was touch and go though! 😁

ScottishMouse · 10/07/2024 08:41

Ah thanks everyone for the sympathy and understanding. I have been very aware that I have done a lot of shopping recently, and my pattern seems to be: buy something I really like and think looks good, try it on in the cold light of my bedroom or in front of someone else, realise it actually doesn’t flatter at all, return it, immediately start searching for something else to order.
It’s not good. I do have a few things I love which I think look pretty ok on me, but not many, and I am always so afraid that if I wear them lots, they will wear out and then I’ll not be able to find something to replace them. I have this with the only white shirt I own. It is held together by threads, and I have never found anything as good. Maybe buying multiples is the way forward. I have done this with Alix trousers and the slate cotton linen pinafore, but perhaps I need to do more of it.
Anyhow, I am at the airport, waiting to fly to Sweden. Probably no time for shopping on my trip, but hoping I can try not to think about what I’m wearing too much, and at least not make everyone else miserable. Thanks again everyone.

sonjadog · 10/07/2024 08:50

Sorry to hear you are feeling so down, I hope you enjoy Sweden very much. I have just come back from 2 weeks there. I haven't bought any Toast clothes this spring because I have instead been getting out all my older Toast clothes and looking at them with a critical eye and getting a local tailor to change the fit so that it is just the way I want it. So I have been lowering unflatteringly high necks, changing fit under the arm, widening/taking in items. It has given me a whole new wardrobe of summer clothes. Maybe that is something that you could consider when you get back? Try on the items that aren't quite right and think what needs to happen for them to be just what you want.
