How old is this bride?

I'm thinking of wearing this for my wedding. My friend think it ages me considerably. Wedding is informal and low key. How old would you think the bride would be wearing this?

We had less than 20 at ours then bigger party after the honeymoon. Tbh I wish I hadn't invited some of those but it was a great party anyway.

MonotonePlum · 11/02/2024 21:46

I would have said late 40s-50s, second marriage in a registry office. The sheer sleeves make it look like it's for an older woman who doesn't want to show her arms but wants to look more dressy/bridal than having full sleeves. The floaty design and unfitted waist also makes me think someone who wants to hide flaws.

I'm really surprised the majority said 20s and someone willowy and slim. Literally the opposite of the vibe I get!

blooblom · 11/02/2024 21:46

I hated wedding dress shopping. I got mine in a sample sale online for £500 in the end. I do think something about it makes it look a little frumpy. It's not cheap, it's £200. It shouldn't look cheap for that price. It may just be the harsh studio lighting though and look nicer in person as is often the case. Looking on the website, there are other coast bridal dresses I prefer personally. Have you looked at any needle and thread dresses? Or monsoon? There is a thread on here currently where the bride is having a similar type of wedding to you and she ordered some from monsoon and ghost and they're lovely. Also you could try Still White for second hand dresses.

CinnamonTree · 11/02/2024 21:56

@Ulysees well if you fancy a holiday down south 😉 sounds very similar to what we want. I'm thinking a BBQ later on but not sure yet.

@blooblom I bought it discounted so paid £150. I also meant cheap in relation to a lot of dresses. I have looked at needle and thread but a lot of them remind me of dresses from my childhood when I was made to wear a taffeta monstrosity to birthday parties. They are beautiful dresses but not my style at all.

There is a Monsoon dress I love but I'd have to commit to being a size 12 and it is £550. Again for a few hours doesn't make sense to me.

Can you post a pic, minus face of course? I don’t get how it could age you but maybe a seamstress could make it fit you better? I really like it :)

Downunderduchess · 11/02/2024 23:26

It’s a lovely dress, very pretty. If you like it and you feel good in it that’s all that matters.

Moveoverdarlin · 11/02/2024 23:35

It’s a very summery dress. And it gives off very hippy, dippy, boho vibes. I don’t think it necessarily looks old, I can imagine a pretty 20 year old getting married in it at Glastonbury in bare feet and smoking a spliff. Guests on hay bales and a bare chested hippy playing the drums.

Cocacolacarrie · 11/02/2024 23:40

I don't think it helps that it doesn't really flatter the model. It's very white. The model is very pale and has yellow undertones. So it doesn't suit her. But it could look completely different on you OP.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2024 23:49

We're hoping for a meal in a pub later.

I wouldn't be able to eat anything with a sauce wearing those sleeves Grin
I think the less 'blousy' first two of Ghislane's links might be better.

Ruthietuthie · 11/02/2024 23:52

Honestly, I think you should buy the expensive dress that you really like, if it is within your budget. My wedding dress cost a small fortune but it was exactly what I wanted and the most beautiful I have ever felt. I ADORED it.
Just because you are having a low-key day, doesn't mean you can't wear the dress you really love.
You don't love this dress - you can tell from your questions and description - so just get the one you do love. It will be money well-spent. You only (hopefully) get one wedding day.

paisley256 · 12/02/2024 00:05

That dress is stunning! If you love it wear it. I wore a beautiful black dress for mine and I'm glad I did because I loved it and felt amazing in it.

BasiliskStare · 12/02/2024 00:18

@CinnamonTree "I do like the dress. I think it looks good on. "

I think that is your answer . Why spend £2000 when this would look lovely. My wedding dress was an evening dress in a sale £400 - sorted . Having tried on £2000 + wedding dresses. I think that dress won't make you 5"11" and willowy but it looks like a flattering cut which could suit different shapes . I'd go for it .

Fingerscrossedfor2021HK · 12/02/2024 02:02

@CinnamonTree - this dress is beautiful! Height is the key for this sort of dress so at 5’9” you’ll look great! The key is whether it makes you feel lovely - if it does then that’s really all that matters.

Ulysees · 12/02/2024 02:12

@CinnamonTree aww I wish I could.

Have you thought about looking on vinted for a monsoon one? Or eBay? Mine was very slightly tight and I got it altered. I ended up giving to a charity. I'm not that sentimental though.

defiant2024 · 12/02/2024 02:21

Thirty plus. Really pretty dress.

Ulysees · 12/02/2024 02:21

Just had a look on vinted there's some lovely ones. I still like your choice though.

thebestinterest · 12/02/2024 02:29

I get a 50 yeaR old vibe… but honestly, wear what YOU love!

bradpittsbathwater · 12/02/2024 02:34

I'm not keen. I think it even makes that lovely model look frumpy. It's poorly fitted and cheap looking.

Lavenderandbrown · 12/02/2024 03:57

I think it has a very pretty boho (not dippy as pp felt) with Stevie Nicks vibe. Soft hair with long slender earrings. I do like @ghislaine coast suggestion. Many years ago I bought the more expensive dress at 1300$ compare to the 500$ second runner up so I also agree buy what you really will feel special wearing. Makeup shoes and hair are such an enhancement to the overall look. I see it as a very young Kate Moss tall willowy bride. I love a bride who wears something a bit different.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/02/2024 04:16

I think it is lovely. It would be good to see pic of how it looks on you.

Monty27 · 12/02/2024 04:27

It's so boho I love it. I have a festival dress I'd happily get married in. It's from M&S.
You really don't need to spend 2k reading from your posts. Congratulations Keep us posted and have a great day you'll rock it if you get it.

useitorlose · 12/02/2024 04:50

It's pretty but those overlong sleeves would drive me nuts.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/02/2024 05:10

I don't think anyone can tell without seeing it on tbh.

Annass · 12/02/2024 05:25

I like sleeves on wedding dresses as I think the modest look is very elegant and classy regardless of shape or age. However on this dress the sleeves look like an after thought, attached due to arms self consciousness rather than style. I think halter neck bodice witg sleeves looks odd like an awkward shrug or bolero. I love lace and chiffon but on this dress it looks like window curtains.

I would assume this dress is picked by a 50 to 70 year old who is arms self conscious becausel the sleeves on the dress look ugly and forced as opposite to dressers that are actually enhanced with sleeves.
