Fellow apple shaped women, have you found any dresses you love recently?

Hi all, I need a dress or two to wear on days I have to go in to work. No real dress code (NHS) so looking for comfort and practicality.

I have no waist, it has disappeared and I am struggling to know what might suit me now. Anyone a similar shape found something flattering?

As you age, and especially in perimenopause your weight redistributes even when you don’t put on weight. Hence ‘middle aged spread.’ It happens more to some people than others (looking at you my enviably flat stomached 78 year old MIL.) I’m only 2kg heavier than 10 years ago but a quite different shape.

It isn’t always caused by visceral fat either. Many women find they shrink after menopause due to osteopenia (bone thinning) and part of that can involve spinal compression and the midsection squashing up. You see it a lot in women over 75.

I just came to say I got the Becca dress after reading this. Normally I would never have gone to this brand. It’s a great dress!! Now I need to find flat shoes that go with tights!

AhBiscuits · 17/02/2024 17:49

The one review says there's too much material in the skirt, but I like that in a dress as it disguises my flat bum and non-existent hips.

Zebracat · 17/02/2024 18:41

@AhBiscuits I think that dress would work. My ribs are skinny, and it’s quite fitted there, so it would stop the nastiness that occurs when there is no separation between breasts and belly.
@ChaiTeaLatte11 How is the Emory? I keep looking at it but it looks very short. Im 5.7?
@cremebrulait have a jigsaw dress very similar to the phase 8 and it works really well.

LadyEloise1 · 17/02/2024 20:11

I couldn't wear it as an apple with no waist. But I'm only 5ft 4.

VenusClapTrap · 18/02/2024 09:29

That could work. It would be too long for me though.

Rina66 · 18/02/2024 10:31

I find co ords work better for me than dresses, or thicker t shirt tiered dresses?

I've got this in black but it's sold out now, I wear the pieces separately too, it hides my tummy

I also have this dress in a few colours, great to just throw on and it has pockets...

RandomMess · 18/02/2024 10:39

I would have to go up 2 sizes to get that dress done up over my stomach.

My tummy is a dress size bigger than my boobs and 2 bigger than my hips.

I wonder if some of the apples on this thread are actually columns with a small bit of belly?

RandomMess · 18/02/2024 10:40

I'm talking about the M&S dress btw

@RandomMess I completely agree with you on this!

VenusClapTrap · 18/02/2024 10:52

I think it’s a sliding scale from column to apple. I started as a column and have gradually appled outwards. So some dress shapes that worked for me in the early apple stage no longer work.

AhBiscuits · 18/02/2024 11:40

I've never been 100% on what shape I am.
I do have a waist, but just below that is where all my weight goes. I have a tummy, flat bum and skinny legs so I assumed apple.

Lentilweaver · 18/02/2024 12:04

I know you said dresses, OP, but I have much more success with skirts and a dark fitted top. I hate current fashion in dresses; all those huge statement sleeves, frills, tiers and excess material do nothing for my shape. So I just wear a skirt with a plain top.

I have had a lot of compliments on this very basic Uniqlo skirt. I know it looks dull, but it's good on me. 3D Knit Souffle Yarn Skirt | UNIQLO US

Gettingcolder · 18/02/2024 13:13

The M&S dress has waisted in the title, so surely would be a no for an non-waisted apple shape? Nothing with buttons down the front works well for me as they always bulge in the wrong place.

Chewbecca · 18/02/2024 13:56

Yeah, I couldn't wear that dress, it would show off my huge non existent waist then hang down from there so be really far away from my legs at the front IYKWIM!

I’ve just ordered the Emory as it’s apparently the last day of the sale. I’m 5’8 so assumed it would be really short (Hush used to show their model heights which was really useful) but several reviews say otherwise - we shall see!

I get what you mean. There is a chance it will make me look pregnant.

LadyEloise1 · 18/02/2024 15:07

@Rina66 I've never heard of Manamou.
Those tiered dresses look lovely for the summer.
What is the quality like ?
I see they are really cheap. Is the material really thin - would the white dress be practically see through ?

Rina66 · 19/02/2024 00:27

@LadyEloise1 the dress is 95% cotton, I would say it's like a thick t-shirt material or lightweight summer sweatshirt material. Sorry, I don't have the white, so I'm not sure how see through it would be, I've zoomed in on the website pic to see if you can see the hanger through the dress and I think you just about can, I've screenshotted below. They do this dress every year so I've got 5 colours, the lightest I have is the stone and it isn't see through.

Rina66 · 19/02/2024 00:35

I think this M & S dress could also work on an apple, I saw it in store and it's a lovely soft light weight denim fabric, you could wear now with a long sleeve top under and boots, then with sandals in the summer.

LadyEloise1 · 19/02/2024 08:55

Thank you for replying @Rina66
The dresses look great for summer apples and are a great price. I love the white, black, green and stone but I'd also love it in navy.

AhBiscuits · 20/02/2024 18:20

I really like the dress, the flare makes me look less potato shaped. BUT the buttons start below my boobs. Obviously I could wear a different bra but I'd be showing a lot more boob than I'm comfortable with. I'm a 34GG so maybe just too big for it. Could maybe wear a vest under 🤔
.

Chewbecca · 20/02/2024 18:44

That looks really nice (from what I can see). Either you have a waist or the dress is doing a great job of making it look that way! I would wear a vest with it I think,
or you can get those fake vests in granny catalogues I think?

Rina66 · 20/02/2024 20:04

Modesty panels I think they're called?
The dress looks gorgeous on you, I agree it's a tad too low for day wear though, surely that's a design fault.
