Fellow apple shaped women, have you found any dresses you love recently?

Hi all, I need a dress or two to wear on days I have to go in to work. No real dress code (NHS) so looking for comfort and practicality.

I have no waist, it has disappeared and I am struggling to know what might suit me now. Anyone a similar shape found something flattering?

Try bon prix. They have some great dresses. I have larger tummy but small hips so wear lots elasicated dresses as fit hips better. Not sure what size you are but fashion world and simply be have lots nice ones.

I struggle with trousers and tops as an apple, can someone explain what kind of thing? If I do it I go for high waisted so that the waist band is above the fullest part of my tummy and then a loose top over. I find dresses easier.

Personally I get on better with lower cut trousers. Then tops that are reasonably fitted at the shoulders / boobs. If the top is long then I do a small tuck, either middle or at both sides.
A separate top / trousers is far more flattering to my figure because you don't see / highlight the problem middle area. I would like more dresses though, just for a change!

This! Couldn't tell you the last time I wore trousers!

I have a few cocoon type dresses from Roman Originals and they're very flattering. Cheap as chips and the quality is good for the price.

What do you mean your waist has disappeared? By putting on weight?

As you age, and especially in perimenopause your weight redistributes even when you don’t put on weight. Hence ‘middle aged spread.’ It happens more to some people than others (looking at you my enviably flat stomached 78 year old MIL.) I’m only 2kg heavier than 10 years ago but a quite different shape.

I think on me the trousers would constantly fall down. I have narrow hips and a flat bum, nothing to hold them up!

Yep, exactly that @LaChienneDesFromages

@ToothFairy2023 . I’m 64, plus sized and-a tall apple. You could wear either of those dresses. My current favourite is Jigsaw, from a charity shop, kind of batwing sleeve knitted blouson dress, short and with a tighter skirt. It looks great with black tights and flat boots. I also have a long thick v neck knitted dress from H&M which is incredibly comfortable and looks, dare I say, quite stylish.I dont have a link but it’s in the sale. I find columnar dresses in general work well for me.

leli · 20/01/2024 10:59

Thank you for the M & S Jaeger recommendation. I'm ordering it. Perfect for my work.

stealthbanana · 20/01/2024 11:21

Im another apple who’s looking in horror at the recs for wrap dresses, belted dresses etc - I’ve never found one that works for me. Now that I’ve finallt
got rid of my massive pregnancy / breast feeding boobs and am back to a more normal size bust if I’m wearing a dress I prefer an a line dress that skims
but not clings the waist and hips. Or even better a drop waist dress but they are few and far between - they are def the most flattering.

but I much prefer trousers and a top. The French tuck is in my view the apple’s best friend. Cos are good for trousers as they have the elastic waist adjusters in them so i can get (non existent) waist to (long skinny£ leg ratio right. As others have said a V at the top (short, v neck jumper) is good but I also like a tighter top that ends at the bottom of the hips - a sort kf
dropped waist version for separates. I also like a midi skirt with the longer line top too - again, nothing tight just skimming. But I have broad shoulders so tops will hang nicely on me.

Yes thats exactly it, high waisted with a top over which skims until just below the bum (which I also have none of)

Not on me. On me it highlights the problem area.

Omg this is me. Even leggings falls down. I have to put a pair of pants on top of them and wear a long top.

VenusClapTrap · 20/01/2024 12:24

I bought this recently. Don’t be put off by the drawstring; it’s a non functional detail rather than an actual drawstring, and the dress skims while giving the illusion of shape. It was pretty flattering.

I did end up sending it back, but that was because it was too long for me (I’m vertically challenged). The fit was great.

I used to own a few pairs of side zip flat fronted trousers I cried when they died!

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 20/01/2024 12:26

Apple shape here and blouson shape works for me. I buy tops with an elasticated hem. Dresses- the Becca from phase eight linked above is very flattering

MrsSlocombesCat · 20/01/2024 12:26

£99 for a dress??! And a lot of sizes unavailable. The other one appears to be sold out.

Pinkrose19 · 20/01/2024 16:44

I’d recommend skater style dresses - flows straight over the tummy area and accentuates the boobie region, drawing attention away from the stomach. Something similar to this!

I’m in my early 30’s and would probably go for something a bit shorter to wear with tights, but this is definitely the type of dress that I find most flattering.

Unfortunately skater dresses or fit and flare make me look like Mavis Cruet from Willow the Wisp. Cocoon or tunic shape is good. I love boat necks or interesting sleeves. Anything to distract from my stomach.

Chewbecca · 20/01/2024 17:51

I also have a Phase Eight Becca dress which is probably my most flattering of all.

OMG I’d completely forgotten Mavis Cruet!
Yes, I think Mavis & I have a lot in common these days.

I recently purchased this dress and it’s so flattering - fabric is light so more of a spring dress but it’s lined and also has pockets. I’ve worn it through winter with jumper and boots. Always get compliments when wearing it! https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/meadowsweet-smocked-long-sleeve-dress

@ToothFairy2023 if you are on Facebook, I would suggest joining the TALLternative Retail Group if you haven't already as well as lots of suggestions for items which happen to be long from the bigger retailers, also introduced me to some that make to order and will adjust their usual sizing to suit such as Ooh Betty Clothing and Jumping Ships

PurpleSky300 · 21/01/2024 14:29

I like mid-length dresses with dropped sleeves or wrap dresses that you can pull in at the waist. I've given up on separates as they just make me look 10 x bigger so I live in dresses these days.
