Fellow apple shaped women, have you found any dresses you love recently?

Hi all, I need a dress or two to wear on days I have to go in to work. No real dress code (NHS) so looking for comfort and practicality.

I have no waist, it has disappeared and I am struggling to know what might suit me now. Anyone a similar shape found something flattering?

I look dreadful in wraps and elastic waisted dresses or belts.
Empire line makes me look pregnant.
Anything tight fitting makes me look like a snake that's swallowed a rat.
I always look for cocoon style.

I absolutely love that green dress. Ordered immediately.

Hands off, its mine!! And that jigsaw silk dress, aaaagggghh be still my beating heart.

I love green 😍

ToothFairy2023 · 19/01/2024 08:35

Good thread OP.

I also love that green dress but if your tall 6ft and over 50 almost 60 and plus sized I don’t think I’d get away with it or the Fatface dress even in long. I have a short who wears those Fatface dresses she is about 5ft with a slim waist and big boobs. Any suggestions for a plus sized old tall 🍏

Sorry to hijack but if anyone knows of ones that deliver to Australia I would be very thankful. I tried to buy theTOAST gingham one but they don't deliver here. Exactly what I was looking for too :(

Ask someone in UK to order, and send it to you.
Higher postal charges, and no chance of returns, but perhaps worth it!
I'll do it for you.

Chewbecca · 19/01/2024 10:16

Like a PP, Fat Face Simone dresses sit well on me.
I definitely can't wear wraps, my middle looks ridiculous and highlighted in them. It needs to be skimmed over, not bandaged up.

IDontHateRainbows · 19/01/2024 11:24

I rate the white stuff jersey 'tess' dresses for covering my spare tyre. I thought they had stopped doing them but was pleasantly surprised to get one half price in the January sales.

Imicola · 19/01/2024 12:56

I got a couple from White Stuff in the sale. This one, and another similar: Lucy Eco Vero Midi Dress in GREEN MULTI | White Stuff

I've also had a few from Joules - don't think they have them any more.

I'm actually finding current styles in the shop much better for my shape than in recent years. I tend to go for midi length and loose with pattern (but not ditsy flowers). Bonus that they are super comfortable. I have small bust, no waist and bit of a tum.

I'm interested in the idea of a "cocoon" shaped dress...I may investigate further!

Lucy Eco Vero Midi Dress in GREEN MULTI

Shop the Lucy Eco Vero Midi Dress in GREEN MULTI. This midi's v-neck, ruching and floaty sleeves are just waiting to be shown off in the sun. And in the balmy evening light. And under the heaters outside at the restaurant.

I’m a slim apple so might be different but I definitely don’t have a waist. I suit an empire line. Nobody’s Child does a great and affordable range. The Luna suits me especially well though I have to get them shortened. A shift dress can also work but that’s a bit more hit and miss.

So hourglass then!!!

Im an apple, I wouldnt be caught dead in a dress, they all look terrible on me

Trousers and top every time.

I'm an apple with big boobs and am most definitely not an hourglass!! You need a defined, recognizable waist to have an hourglass, and to have hips rather larger than your waist. I have big boobs, big waist, bit of a belly, really small hips and skinny legs. Absolutely not an hourglass.

Yes I see what you mean. My waist is bigger than my bra size which is such a disappointment. My hips are difficult to measure due to flab, or is flab the hips?

Anyway, me and dresses dont get on

fibeee · 19/01/2024 20:12

I would define myself as an apple. I do have a waist but my tummy is my problem area and I carry extra weight there. I also have slim arms and legs in comparison.

What works for me is this style of shirt dress. It has a drawstring so you can tie that at the slimmest point in your mid-section to create the illusion of a waist.

I have no waist anywhere!!

Slimmest part is the rib cage under my boobs.

I'm a blob with legs and arms sticking out

Jook · 19/01/2024 21:50

Recommending Whitestuff jersey dresses here too. I’ve just bought a couple in the Next sale and also a full price one (think it was called Rua). Fits really well and hangs perfectly.

Would that not be an ‘inverted triangle’ body shape?

BinkyBeaufort · 19/01/2024 23:05

I'm an absolute Granny Smith of an apple and have at least 8 Seasalt dresses. The only ones that I can rely on to suit me and not grab round the middle. As flattering as can be under the circumstances ...

Vinrouge4 · 19/01/2024 23:31

Another vote for fat face and boden do quite roomy shift dresses.

Chewbecca · 19/01/2024 22:38

Possibly? From what I have read they're quite similar and variations of each other, the difference being whether your shoulders or boobs are larger. I've never measured my shoulders so have no idea which is bigger.

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 19/01/2024 23:57

@RichardMarxisinnocent my apple sounds the same as yours; good legs; weight goes on my midriff and my waist is not defined… but some clothes choices depend on my size. ATM I’m a 10 so tum isn’t particularly big but at a size 12 some clothes won’t sit well.
Generally wraps & fitted shirt dresses work as they give some structure and illusion of a waist; or a short shift to show legs.

a lot of the clothes suggested here would be awful on me (empire makes me look preggers and a loose dress with drawstring waist hides good bits while drawing attention to non existent waist). So each to their own but sorry OP as there isn’t much of a consensus!

Changedandderanged · 20/01/2024 07:19

Thanks for all the great ideas & recommendations, I’m going to order a few & see what looks best.

I’ve also just ordered this as I wanted to see if the shape works for me. https://www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Stitch-Detail-Cocoon-Dress/p/A10694?swatch=Navy

I love the look of this one, although at the top of my price range. @LaChienneDesFromages will you let us know if you like it once it arrives?

I also wear trousers and tops all the time & would love any recommendations for recent trouser / top purchases too.

I love the idea of a dress though, and I keep thinking if I could find a flattering dress it would be an easy & comfy work outfit.

Love this too. Like the drawstring, but think it might make me look like a barrel with a ribbon on. Worth a try though.

There are some really good suggestions on this thread! I've ordered the hush dress. I've found flattering dresses in Boden (dresses where the waist sort of starts under your boobs rather than on the waistline but not a horizontal empire line..the jersey seer-sucker midi dress from last summer being an example but I see this year they have the Sophia linen dress), Whistles dresses (the Frankie style is spot on..I have in navy and also cream) and Phase Eight. I am very much an apple and I find a dress much easier than top/trousers if you get the right one.

AhBiscuits · 20/01/2024 08:15

I struggle with trousers and tops as an apple, can someone explain what kind of thing? If I do it I go for high waisted so that the waist band is above the fullest part of my tummy and then a loose top over. I find dresses easier.

PaperwhiteTheFriendlyGhost · 20/01/2024 08:22

What do you mean your waist has disappeared? By putting on weight?
