That's a shame @Orangeslemon Still I wanted something with a relatively wide base as I intend to put quite a lot in it.

Just found myself wondering when the next box is turning up - not until April obviously - hardly started the last one ..

Cyclingmummy1 · 07/02/2024 19:58

I think I might prefer yours @listsandbudgets .

As someone said, either on this thread or the advent calendar thread, brands like 111Skin only seem to exist to increase the supposed value of advent calendars and beauty boxes. Outrageously priced products that are very meh in practice, but you feel like you’re getting great value when a single pack of eye masks are supposedly 15 quid’s worth of product 😄

Yes who was it that came up with this theory? Where are they?!
Has Dr Barbara Sturm topped her because she’d uncovered a dark secret that goes all the way to the top…

Prawncow · 07/02/2024 21:23

I don’t believe the masks really do anything but they’re fun to use.

Nortono · 07/02/2024 21:31

I don’t think I’ll bother with an advent calendar again, because I just have all the small bottles of stuff I don’t know how to use or when to use and I think I prefer just a Beauty boxes

Probably Grin

avant's another one that pops up in beauty boxes all time and claims to be outrageously expensive.

The fake expensive products for beauty boxes feels dangerously close to a fraud tbh

CanImakethisbetter · 08/02/2024 07:35

I really liked the eyes masks that was in the drop. But I do agree it’s designed to boost the value of the items.

But I use the gel eye masks everyday, after consistent use of about a month I noticed a massive difference under my eyes. The but ones in the beauty drop didn’t do anything more than the ones I buy a lot cheaper at Stylevana.

Using them once, is only going to show a bit of temporary hydration. I don’t see the point in these boxes. Other than to boost the value. They aren’t that good that using them once would tempt you into buying a load of them.

I do agree it’s skirts quite close to fraud for me. I got the fortnum and mason advent calandar for my mum in 2021. The products were all good. But I suspect there were a few of these types in there as well.

Haha! I wish I could remember who said it, but they are smarter than me. Don’t get me wrong, I have a particular beef with 111Skin and their terribly average range, so I was under no illusions that their products were actually worth the price tag… but the idea that these products wouldn’t exist without the demand for mega value in beauty boxes, advent calendars and GWPs is really interesting.

Having said all that, I still buy in to all this stuff so more fool me 😂

I don’t believe the masks really do anything but they’re fun to use.

Agree! They’re nice to use but I don’t feel my skin gets any more out of them than a mask I can buy for a couple of quid in Superdrug.

Housewife2010 · 08/02/2024 10:51

I'm suspicious of Skin Chemists & Dr Botanicals too. I reckon they're in league with the dodgy Avant. Probably Sentier fragrances too.

OP posts:
D20 · 08/02/2024 11:42

I’ve bought Dr Botanicals (on offer) direct before and they are available on Ocado so I think they are a proper brand but a lot of ‘brands’ are white label products (only found out there was an actual name for them recently) so made by a factory that slaps a different sticker on to get the right market.

I’m on picky app so get a lot of Korean brands to trial for free. There are a lot of nationalities on it so I’ve found out the Korean brands you get in the US are often different from the Korean brands in the UK and actual Koreans are often using something else entirely! FWIW I’ve tried high cost and lower end products and can’t tell the difference.

AprilLady · 08/02/2024 12:31

@d20, I was going to say something similar. I think the worst culprits are the likes of Avant - lead by someone whose expertise is marketing, from what I can gather, deliberately trying to suggest white label products are something special and which are almost exclusively found in beauty boxes. I suspect Verso are in the same category.

I think 111Skin, and even more so MZ Skin and Dr Barbara Sturm are a bit different - they are mostly celebrity dermatologists/plastic surgeons etc who are monetising their (celebrity?) medical reputation by creating a line of products and selling it in high end stores like Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nicks, on Net a Porter etc. I actually do rate some of the MZ skin and BS products - not the masks, but the MZ skin eye serum and eye cream and a couple of their other serums and creams. But they are certainly not worth the £££ price.

QueefofSheena · 08/02/2024 16:36

I used some of a gift voucher I had and my £10 voucher on a Mojave Ghost roll on perfume as I liked the sample in the CB box. It’s out for delivery via Amazon though, not thrilled about that.

listsandbudgets · 08/02/2024 16:46

The second bag is now out for delivery with Amazon AGAIN. I hope it makes it this time but after last time I don't have enormous confidence. Tracking on last one is still telling me they'll give me a delivery date if they get one!

I think if Liberty probably need to take their branding off the boxes to make them less tempting to thieves

wheresmyshoe · 08/02/2024 17:45

I've had some brilliant products from Dr Botanicals, as soon as I've run through the facial oil stash I'll be straight back to them. Great value, I've bought direct too @D20

I did a Google earlier and someone on Reddit was saying the ingredients in beauty box 111skin masks are different from in their "proper " masks. I haven't checked the ingredients myself though so don't know how much truth there is in that.

They were also saying the Avant ingredients were so bad they wouldn't even pay a few pounds for the product (again, I haven't checked this myself!)

brogueish · 08/02/2024 22:52

Has anyone tried the Diptyque hair mists? Specifically the Eau des Sens one. I feel like a frivolous mini splurge (but still don’t want to waste my credit!).

forcedfun · 08/02/2024 23:53

@brogueish I have a diptyque hair mist and really love it .

brogueish · 09/02/2024 06:54

@forcedfun lovely. Thank you. I will place an order!

TragicMuse · 09/02/2024 15:06

I saw Dr Barbara Sturm products at the airport a couple of weeks ago. I had the mixed feelings of being excited to spot a brand in the wild, a sage nod at the wildly high prices and being glad they aren't purely a white label brand.

I loved the miniature serum that came in a BD box but couldn't ever afford it in real life!

listsandbudgets · 09/02/2024 15:38

@TragicMuse I eked that miniature out as if it was made of melted gold - I was quite upset to finish it, thought I'd buy myself some and nearly fainted when I saw the price - I mean honestly I'd say I'm on the extravagant side but not £650 for 100ml extravagant Grin

Frazzgirl · 09/02/2024 19:13

I had a Barbara Sturm Cleanser in one of the gift sets think it was the jet set one in the pink bag? Absolutely loved it it was 50ml I believe x

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 09/02/2024 23:22

I like a bit of Barbara Sturm but I’ve never yet bought a full size. The closest I came was when we got that 3ml ‘Better B’ sample. I bought a few more on Vinted and nearly committed to a big one before coming to my senses.

If I were wealthy I would absolutely buy it, but I don’t think I would buy 111skin. That’s maybe partly about the branding, but also a response to products I’ve tried in kits/gwps.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 09/02/2024 23:50

Oh btw! I have been meaning to post here about a Chantecaille foaming cleanser sample — was that a Beauty Drop item? It was the Rice and Geranium one.

I took it on a trip away this week and really liked it a lot as a morning cleanser in the shower. It’s £57 though 🫢

Completely agree with this! I hate the fact that it’s so visible. I’m always amazed that they trust Amazon too. I once ordered an expensive toiletries bag in the sale (still embarrassed about the price!), delivered by Amazon - took 10 days to arrive. It disappeared/got lost in the tracking for about 4 days, and then the tracking showed it all over the country before it made it to me. I’ve come to the conclusion that if ordering something expensive again I’ll order with next day delivery because then it’s usually DPD, who are very reliable here.

Did your bag come @listsandbudgets?

deepsea9 · 10/02/2024 09:49

I love Barbara Sturm products - I’d have my whole skincare regime from her range if I won the lottery!
