Will Stanley cups become the next "must have" in the UK?

Somewhat lighthearted! Grin

So, on TikTok/ Instagram etc, it seems that pink Stanley cups are the next big accessory! I must admit, they do look very pretty!

Who's buying one for their spring wardrobe?

We have a huge Stanley flask and Stanley food flash which are great but not very fashionable. They aren’t made to look good.

I like Bodem for hot drinks and chillies for cold drinks.

FrancisSeaton · 07/01/2024 11:15

No they are ugly. There are surely nicer looking vessels that do the same thing. Just because moron Mae has one

LlynTegid · 07/01/2024 11:18

Thank you for the warning never to consider one.

decisionssmecisions · 07/01/2024 11:37

It’s like Prime or Air up, the power of marketing & people who want what they see on sm & want to fit in.

Stressfordays · 07/01/2024 11:38

I have one and I do like it. Im a nurse so having a big cup with a straw is handy to keep on the desk and grab when I need it. I also put coffee in it when I'm at my son's football matches. I also have a load of Starbucks cups for the kids who are too 'old' for beakers but are still prone to spilling drinks so cups they like with lids and straws are always welcome. I got a pack of 5 multicolored glitter ones for 20quid just before Xmas. I keep one of those by my bed too 🤣

They blew up on TikTok last year with a "clean girl" aesthetic. Personally I don't use mine as it leaks and it's impractical to carry such a large water bottle about! A few of my colleagues have them but they don't fit in their cup holders, I'm lucky to have a car with large enough cup holders but I prefer a smaller water bottle.

Falkenburg · 07/01/2024 12:01

In the 1970s I used to take something very similar to school for my orange squash!

It never leaked as it had a screw top cap and the outer lid was a cup.

My memory is of mother buying them from a camping shop.

To be fair I was in school in the 90s (graduated 2002) and definitely remember carrying water bottles around. Those 500ml ones with flip lids and squeezy tops, useful for water fights. A water bottle was one of the few things we could take into exams and everyone had one by their chair.

Edited

In the 70s my school had countless water fountains and we had a drink between lessons

MaidOfSteel · 07/01/2024 12:24

I much prefer my Thermos. It has a nice drinking edge, it's leakproof when locked and fits easily into car cupholders. The Stanley Cup is just way too big for me.

@BlouseyBrownMalone I have it on my desk and fill it and drink until it is empty. I can only fill it during breaks so because it holds more I can drink more over the time between breaks.

My class do feel a bit sorry for my Chillys bottle but that is my back up/ carry around bottle.

ThePoshUns · 07/01/2024 13:28

Look like toddlers walking around sucking on over sized sippy cups

BatshitCrazyWoman · 07/01/2024 13:35

God, that pink is hideous 😕 I don't like straws, so not for me. I love being older, I couldn't give a fuck about what the latest thing is.

Blarn · 07/01/2024 14:29

And yes, collections https://images.app.goo.gl/tTJKQ5CSVn2mv9WZ7. Although anything can be collected. I have no interest in leaky water bottles with a straw but I do have a number of small ceramic ghosts figures from a Danish pottery studio. Pointless? Yes. But I love collecting them.

This is the picture the suspicious looking google link would take you to!

When I saw the title I thought it was talking about a tennis tournament trophy 🏆; and thought that's quite a niche fashion accessory.

RampantIvy · 07/01/2024 15:24

I have a bottle with a straw for long car journeys. A straw is so much easier when driving. It is an inexpensive supermarket one.

What adaptor did you get?

I'm waiting for them to come back in stock in the UK. Only one that seems to be available is a cream.

I think they're designed for American women who are seldom far from their cars. They are designed to fit in cupholders (hence that silly shape where it narrows towards the bottom), and the straws are handy for drinking while driving, in the non-DUI sense that is (I hope!). They do not look handy for carrying about, if you are someone who actually walks places and has to carry your stuff with you all day, or particularly stable when placed on any surface that isn't a cupholder.

Personally I think straw cups are a necessary evil when children are really small but should stop after that age - they are inherently hard to clean and get smelly/manky over time unless you treat it like a baby bottle and are meticulous about taking it to pieces and scalding it with hot water etc. And as others have said, they may cause lip-thinning and wrinkles around your mouth if you are doing it all day long.

Competitive hydration is tiresome. If you are not constipated and your pee is pale yellow, you are drinking enough; glugging more and more water all day long after that point will not "detox" you or do anything else, other than ensuring that you constantly have to go to the loo.

pastypirate · 08/01/2024 09:55

I am pleased insulated drink containers are now normalised. Tepid water from a plastic bottle is horrid.

Plastic air up bottles are pointless - the metal flasks are very good.

We have Stanley's Air Ups and Sho bottles and lots of those slim ice cube trays. I enjoy modern life!

MrsMarzetti · 08/01/2024 11:09

Sheeple...... Why on earth do you care what an advertising exec tells you what you need, don't you have your own mind?

LadyWithLapdog · 08/01/2024 12:35

Why do people need to hydrate while driving? Stop at the services, go for a pee, buy on overpriced drink, have 10 minutes rest to stretch your legs.

Omg..I work in a care home and one of our new residents has this. When she said can she take her water bottle on a trip we smelt what was inside as we had never seen a water bottle like this as was worried it was something else!

FreddieMercurysCat · 08/01/2024 17:49

I genuinely can’t see what the fuss is about. But then I tend to not give a rats about fads anyway. I’ve been out of touch my entire life and can’t be faffed to start now 🤣

Snoopsnoggysnog · 08/01/2024 17:54

My DD 13 is into the tiktok clean girl thing. She asked for a Stanley dupe for Christmas. It was about £12 on Amazon. I think it looks ridiculous and is really heavy but like PPs have said it’s an interesting story and every girl in her gymnastics class seems to have had (a real) one for Christmas. I don’t feel bad about getting her the dupe, she’ll have lost interest by Easter.

it’s always something new every year, remember Chillys bottles and Swell bottles? Prime?
last year all the kids seemed to get Air Ups for Christmas which I just can’t get my head round.

Rosiiee · 08/01/2024 18:07

I’m really basic and have one myself 🙈 I use the Stanley for home purposes only. It’s too big to carry around! I only use it with water in. I have a yeti that I use outside the house for tea.

The main reason I wanted a Stanley was because I love the rose quartz colour but also because I tend to just forget my water on my desk for hours and was sick of finding golden retriever furs in it all the time!
