Will Stanley cups become the next "must have" in the UK?

Somewhat lighthearted! Grin

So, on TikTok/ Instagram etc, it seems that pink Stanley cups are the next big accessory! I must admit, they do look very pretty!

Who's buying one for their spring wardrobe?

I don't have tik tok or Instagram or anything and I find the idea of influencers quite unnerving

Same here. I may be incorrect here but I have a mental image of an "influencer" being some vacuous person promoting something that probably is useless in return for vast amounts of £££.

I am clearly the wrong demographic for watching Tik Tok or believing anything an "influencer" might say. If I want to buy something I read up Which? reports and other reviews.

I think they look bloody awful- and don't understand the obsession of having to carry a water container big enough to cross a flipping dessert with, whilst living in a country with easy access to clean water everywhere....and if the straw is in....the lid isn't waterproof. So you're carrying a bloody big leaky cup around everywhere. And I'm probably 20yrs past the demographic that seems to be obsessing over this GrinGrin

I think you would be surprised.

I don’t know what age you are, obviously. But Stanly is very much a trend in the US with women 40 and up.

I actually think it will be younger people who move away from them quicker. In a year the will be the marker of older millennials and gen x. From a social media point of view.

I'll stick with my Waitrose sealable cup, which fits nicely in my car cup holder 👍 a steal at £3 (I've got several for work/home/garden) and I love the fact they are completely unfashionable.

ETA you'd have to use Milton solution regularly with that straw, it would harbour bacteria very easily.

What adaptor did you get?

I'm waiting for them to come back in stock in the UK. Only one that seems to be available is a cream.

Can you not buy a cup that fits yours?

janfebmarchapril · 07/01/2024 08:34

I brought a dupe from Amazon and while it's really nice not having to constantly fill it up, it's really heavy and you can't throw it in your bag

SuffolkUnicorn · 07/01/2024 08:34

No don’t see the hype

tack

I’m in Australia and that rage for about 3 years is Frank Green. Same insulation, great range of colours but not a stupid size and without the stupid straw.

I got a water bottle and coffee cup from Frank Green and I’ve never looked back. Such beautiful colours and amazing quality and totally leak proof.

I saw a video on TikTok the other day about cleaning them properly and some guy showed in the lid where mild collects. He showed how to dismantle the lid for cleaning

Like a pp said, the guy who did the crocs marketing was hired and made the cups viral. I've seen several TikTok's mocking the girls carrying round huge cups in fact Ryanair did one

Yeti is one that I see recommended in comparison as being better and I think actually leak proof

Bibbidybobbidyroo · 07/01/2024 08:41

On one hand, I can’t be mad at the girlies staying hydrated and not buying plastic bottles

On the other, this is probably just going to become prime drinks for teenage girls, isn’t it? Parents will be rushing around constantly posting on fb groups asking if anyone has seen one of a certain colour and then later down the line the fad will be over and the cups will be under beds and back of cupboards.

I saw a tik tok of a girl getting a non branded Stanley cup for Christmas, putting it back in the box and angrily handing it back.

RampantIvy · 07/01/2024 08:42

I don't feel the need to be constantly glugging water. In cold weather I am never thirsty anyway, and the last thing I fancy is a cold drink.

Baaaaaa

LadyWithLapdog · 07/01/2024 08:46

This being in Style & Beauty, I envisaged a new trend for a style of bag, in the shape of a cup. Now I see it’s even worse.

Never heard or saw the things. Given I work in London, use public transport and I’m in a public facing role, it means that I’m not noticing things that I don’t look for when I haven’t been “influenced”.

I’ll ask DDs about it. I remember now one of them asked about £40 for a water bottle. DH said “don’t be ridiculous”, end of discussion. I’ll ask DD when she wakes up if this was the bottle.

Namechange4448830938489 · 07/01/2024 08:47

I thought they were a kind of moon cup 😂

ListenLinda · 07/01/2024 08:55

I saw a post on tiktok of a woman who had specially made shelves put up, so she could display her stanley cups, one in every colour. Must have been about $4000 worth of cups on the shelves. Utter nonsense & what’s the point? Most of them just there gathering dust.
Then I also saw a post of people fighting in a target over the hot pink Starbucks one. I’m all for a good water bottle but that’s just ridiculous.

LadyWithLapdog · 07/01/2024 08:57

Ridiculous. You’d think, oh good, less plastic landfill. But when the trend is over, that’s where these will end too.

I think this craze is really interesting 110 year old company, traditionally marketed to men / manual workers. Woman buys one in a nice colour sells out on her blog, convinces company to offer a greater variety of colours changing their target audience and bam took the company from $75 million to $750 million in sales in 12 months. I'm assuming the weird shape was because originally they were for long distance truckers to keep their drinks hot/cold on the road. Its like if suddenly Thermos offer flasks in sparkly pink - although I do own three in their red version.

Going viral is really weird, it's similar to when Spotify accidentally released 30 seconds of static as Taylor Swifts new song instead of the actual song and it went to number one.

Edited

I think the weird shape of so that they are narrow enough to go in a car/truck mug holder, but have a decent capacity for long journeys.

Well this is the problem with trends. I agree entirely.

The last few years collecting reusable Starbucks cups was a trend. So many people don’t just have 1 or 2 but 50 or 100. Now that classed as a bit naff where are all they going?

People are doing the same with these. Not just one or 2 to reduce plastic use. But collecting in every colour to match every handbag or colour scheme amor collecting for collecting sake. Then they will end up being got rid of when it’s a new trend.

Blarn · 07/01/2024 09:15

I saw these a few months ago when I was looking for a leak proof coffee flask. Dh suggested Stanley (he has their tool boxes!) so I googled Stanley cups and found myself intrigued by all these photos and videos of American women showing their collections and flavoured waters. They all looked around my age or older and yes, their 'smokers mouth' wrinkles around the straw were very noticable!

I think their coffee cups are leakproof but I ended up picking a Smash one up from Sainsburys as it was £10. It's great! My coffee or hot chocolate stays hot for hours and it does not leak one bit. I have a cheap light stainless steel one for water.

LadyWithLapdog · 07/01/2024 09:19

Collections? That’s for little children and their Shopkins. Not adult women and these cups.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 07/01/2024 09:23

They epitomise how easily led people are. The thought of drinking coffee through a straw?? Eeeewww.

And then of course there are the 'dupes'.

Fake. That's what they are. Fake.

All ridiculous in my eyes.

AndThatWasNY · 07/01/2024 09:24

God people are so stupid.

Definitely plenty of adult women collecting Starbucks cup and Stanley cups.

lts not my bag. But it’s definitely a thing. Especially in the US.

The flavoured water thing is also wild and intrinsically linked to diet culture. they have cupboards full of boxes of different flavours to go in their cups.
