Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset and lots of chatter in between.

Previous thread

(I've removed the usual links to recommended shops and other places guides from the OP because I suspect they're getting very out of date at this point)

I'm disappointed beyond words to read that it was a fake Kate Moss in Aldi. Nevertheless I wasted half of yesterday reading about Chanel in Manchester and the pre-show party at Salford Lads Club (Smiths fans will know the significance) so I'm still a day behind with bo's posts. But that coat in the top right hand corner of Day 8 is my perfect shade of beige - just in case anyone ever sees one for less than the price of a small car.

botemp · 09/12/2023 12:06

Fake Moss Shock say it ain't so...

flo I had a friend at Salford Uni in the late 80s/early 90s. The bus from Manchester Picadilly used to go past Salford Lads Club.

mm47 · 09/12/2023 17:11

Oh I love that corridor in the day 8 montage - so beautiful and restful and yet giving energy (no life-sapping detritus hanging around) talk about a fantasy life, even if my house were like that it would be strewn with dog fur and stuff hanging around waiting to be put away elsewhere. and those furry mittens (thinks about beaver lamb fur coats stashed away waiting to be remodelled sometime/never… maybe they could also be used to make matching gaiters - riffing in the fantasy life theme).

flo I read that colour coat as ever so slightly mushroomy, the dead sort of beige that looks fantastic on Italians. Is this right (just so i know what I’m looking out for)?

And day 9 bo the whole composition is beautiful - I love the ear cuff.

Floisme · 09/12/2023 17:33

Yeah I've seen it called that and also taupe mm47. Whatever it is, it's the only shade of beige I like, although that said, it looks deeper (which I prefer) on my phone than it is on my laptop so I wouldn't waste too much time looking for a match!

I think that makes you and Morrissey practically besties quirky, although given later events, you might prefer being Johnny Marr adjacent.

What I found quite endearing about the Chanel show is that it could so easily have ended up as a horribly patronising 'Chanel goes ooop north' kind of thing, but instead they seem to have done their homework and genuinely gone for it, although I don't suppose it'll be going down well with everyone.

quirkychick · 09/12/2023 21:03

😀 flo! We used to hitch hike over from Leeds and go clubbing in Manchester. Or Madchester, as it was.

mm47 · 10/12/2023 00:31

flo I love the glass structure but weirdly I do rather mind about the chewing gum / whatever it is on the road surface. Weirdly because in principle I like things not to be over-manicured so I’m quite surprised that I find the marks detracting my attention from the models.

Enjoyable write up of the hubbub around the Chanel Manchester show in the FT here paywall free version: archive [dot] is/9aWVq (replace [dot] with an actual dot and stitch it all together).

Also another more business focused article also on FT (this one doesn't seem to have a paywall). I wasn't aware the Métiers show earned them that much business, I assumed it was general PR budget brand building.

I'd call that beige colour cream of mushroom soup, not the fancy ones, the basic brand ones.

Thanks bo I'll enjoy reading that over coffee. My favourite image for today (still not checked out Day 9) is that one of the monkey nuts (I think?) with the pearls inside: beauty in unexpected places - that's fashion and indeed all art at its best I think. On a more prosaic note, my next new purchase will be shoes, I don't know about green but I'm not ruling it out.

And speaking of unexpected beauty, yes Manchester's one of my favourite places. It's that mix of radicalism, raw capitalism, squalor, wealth, innovation and hedonism. And unlike some I won't name, they're not scared to dress up Wink The real Mossy will, I'm sure, have had a good time.

You can all stand down from the mushroom coat search unless you've got the same phone as me - it's definitely a different colour on that screen, no wonder my photos always look like crap.

Redandblue11 · 10/12/2023 10:07

The iridescence of today’s images is the perfect pick me up on this Sunday morning. Thank you Bo. The shoes are something I could easily incorporate, but I am also really attracted to the metallic shirt and white skirt.

Agree with mm, yesterday’s composition was spot on. Those silhouettes.

(I am wondering how you have chosen the images…do they have a meaning linked to the days … or am I reading too much … ignore me actually, you can leave us just enjoying them)

Floisme · 10/12/2023 11:24

I'd wondered the same thing Red but then I think it's interesting how we all see the images with fresh eyes and pick out different things and add our own interpretation.

botemp · 10/12/2023 11:38

I've never heard of the terms monkey nuts, (how have you not been cancelled already Flo), you can actually eat those at the Rosewood hotel in London but it is art by Imogen Kwok, she uses food as her medium as opposed to a wanky chef calling themselves an artist. Does a lot of work in the fashion sphere.

As to my methods, eh probably mostly madness as my initial plan of my inbox and feeds wasnt the best plan for December. I tend to just look for patterns and follow that thread, I just put in other disciplines' photographs to give it a wider context and sometimes because my thread is very short and I don't have enough images I'm happy with to use, or just for the aesthetic quality of it all. I do use working titles for some but it's probably best left out in order to leave room for everyone else's own interpretations. But really it's not all that deep...

I've been cancelled so often I've got my own private suite at the gulag bo. What's the correct name? Google Image knew what I meant but I won't post it as I don't want to bring us all down.

botemp · 10/12/2023 11:52

Peanuts 🥜🥜🥜🥜, Google tells me monkey nuts was in use in 1875-80 🧐

OP posts:
Floisme · 10/12/2023 11:57

Really? I'm sure my local Sainsbury's still sell them, I'll have to check next time I go. But in the meantime, my apologies.

botemp · 10/12/2023 12:00

I suspect those dates reflect the Americas, it probably has never gone out of use in the UK. Never been offered/bought peanuts in the UK so probably why I've never heard the term. It's more reflective of the times that my first assumption is that it sounds un-PC 🤔

OP posts:
Floisme · 10/12/2023 12:09

No you're right, it does sound bad. I'll definitely check if they're still labelled that here or whether I'm remembering what my great aunts used to call them. Blush

mm47 · 10/12/2023 12:35

I’ve heard them called monkey nuts - I assumed it was a way to distinguish them from processed peanuts and my mental image is of monkeys sitting on people’s shoulders and using their dextrous paws/hands to crack open the nuts.

Another corker this morning bo please tell more about that amazing light installation.

And thanks for the introduction to Imogen Kwok. Her work is gorgeous!

Here you go Mm, teamlab borderless

(Although I'd point out that Yayoi Kusama has been creating spaces like this for a long time already).

Thanks,Bo, for the Mme Grès recommendation. Loved it but intrigued as to how she got the material during the war!

Did a bit of shopping in another attempt to stay dry. Strangely, the standout chain stores were Stories and the Blvd Haussmann Zara. I hate the expression quiet luxury, but they've made a real go at quiet inexpensive luxury. Massimo Dutti was also good. BHV Marais was like an explosion in a poster paint factory, but I'm not really a fan of bright colours tbh.
