Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset and lots of chatter in between.

Fantastic, thank you. I love immersive light installations, they can be amazing. Lucky Tokyo to have this available to them.

Floisme · 10/12/2023 23:27

I've reading up on 1940s fashion at the moment, so far mainly about the UK austerity restrictions and the Utility Label, but there was a section on occupied France, which I've only skimmed but Madame Gres was mentioned as one of a number of Paris couture houses that stayed open with German approval. Apparently Mme Gres pissed them off by designing mostly in tricoleur colours! But like you Puppy, I did wonder how they got hold of all the fabric and who their clients were and whether they faced any consequences after the war. I'll have to read further.

botemp · 10/12/2023 23:44

She was quite the character, I don't know how much of it became post war lore but she must have had some protection as she was Jewish, defied the German authorities frequently and refused to dress the wives of German army bigiwgs. I think she did have to close her business at some point during the war though, the tricolour collection might have been the clincher.

Oh that's fabulous, what a way to wake up! I didn't have my specs on at first and I thought the middle left pic was a post box in a dress.

A big Nope to bags that need carrying though. Fine for the dressing up box but not real life. I want both my hands free.

Papyrophile · 11/12/2023 09:02

Love the slashed zipped sleeves on middle row right! And the colour riot.

ShangPie · 11/12/2023 09:18

What a riot of colour! How lovely to see all those bright colours and it not feel childish which can be an issue sometimes – this just looks fun. Although the middle image of little boxes makes me think of Fruitella sweeties.

Redandblue11 · 11/12/2023 11:27

Fabulous!
Instantly attracted to the apres ski image . How cool is that!

botemp · 11/12/2023 13:36

Ha, those frutella boxes are actually suitcases, I'm now imagining huge frutellas and getting a hankering for some. I am wondering if they're actually any good now with an adult palette, haven't had one in can't remember how long, I assume because they're not as good as I remember? Or was it the stick your teeth together thing?

Mm, I* *forgot to reply yesterday, but if you don't know about Frameless in London yet that might be up your alley, there's also Ateliers des Lumières in Paris. I think we're getting one in Amsterdam as well. It's more art entertainment than art, tbh, but whatever gets people interested is always good.

Post box in a dress Flo, you're sounding more like Boris by the day 🧐😉 (Your Gulag suite must be resplendent).

Oh no what have I done now bo? I lost track of BJ and his dodgy remarks long ago. But yeah, I saw a red shape with another shape in the middle Confused This is why my specs cost about £500 a pop.

botemp · 11/12/2023 13:59

He called Muslim women wearing a burka letter boxes, did he not? Might be from back in his columnist days.

Floisme · 11/12/2023 14:30

Ah yes so he did. Ok I'll book my suite for the weekend. I think I might have enough points by now for a free spa.

mm47 · 11/12/2023 14:31

bo thank you, I will look into Frameless. I don’t mind if it’s art or entertainment frankly I’m not sure whether I could tell the difference). Years ago I came across a series of speakers in a cloister I think in Salisbury Cathedral… I’ve just googled … think it was Cardiff’s 40 part motet, again to be able to be immersed in a choir was amazing . The Google videos I’ve found look different from what what I experienced: as I remember it, the speakers were set at the height of each individual singer and they looked pretty randomly spaced/ clumped together whereas in the videos it looks much formally spaced.

On to today’s amazing set of images, love the mouths ( make me think of Venus flytraps!) and my favourite is the Slim Aaron’s apres ski wear photo. Just the expressions on their faces - they’re having a great time!

mm, in case you do want a proper art experience, I thought the exhibition was already over so didn't mention previously but at the Tate they currently have the Yayoi Kusama infinity rooms atm. I think it was just sold out (unsurprisingly) when I was in London, not a just missed it thing. The dinner looks very interesting too, might need to check train tickets for London...

Cheer up Flo you are in good bad company (and if you have a suite at the gulag perhaps I could doss there until I’m readmitted to humanity): we have a friend who served in the Gulf War and he described the women over there as “wearing the full Darth Vada”. I know this is seriously non PC but I think the gallows humour of the service personnel gets them through a lot. Nb i’ve I’ve never seen star wars Star Wars except for the fabulous Eddie Izzard skit )

bo Wow this definitely looks worth seeing (and eating!) would love to meet up for it if you would like…

ShangPie · 11/12/2023 15:36

Back to bo’s images, I took another look and only just realised that the middle right is not a sandal poking out of some black fabric!! Need to work on my observation skills 😂

quirkychick · 11/12/2023 19:54

flo, I'm with you on the bags you have to carry!

I love the Darth Vada sketch, too mm47.

The art installations all look amazing.

Nice!

Redandblue11 · 12/12/2023 13:58

Wow so many delightful images today!
now I want a fluffy belt 😀

yogibutton · 12/12/2023 14:04

Thank you, bo, for posting these. I am most amazed by the collages and the choice of what is included [it is very different to how I think and fantastic to witness]

mm, if you are in Denmark a lot, you can see Kusama in Louisiana. If you haven't been to Louisiana, it is worth a trip - an amazing place and they have a small room of Kusama now in their permanent collection.

A little winge; just went to the Joseph sample sale and came out angry and sad, also empty-handed. It all looks a bit H&M, jumpers start piling while on the shop floor, and the designs are wrong - like, a tight hem where it should fall freely, etc. In the end I thought I'd buy a milk colour cotton/silk hoodie. The assistant first said it is cashmere and tried to charge me accordingly (it has 6% cashmere) and when I said it's not cashmere, she said it is heavy knit (it was jersey-like item). I just left as it was a bit desperate trying to get normal sale prices in a sample sale environment with no changing rooms, etc. Another sad thing was seeing women trying and buying things that actively didn't suit them. There was a woman who put a jumper on, which didn't suit her at all, was bulky in the wrong places, wrong neck, etc and announced - It suits me perfectly! I bit my tongue. It was sad.
But I have to say, the majority of people who went for Joseph sample sale were probably of the kind that start threads on here about how to look polished. [to me, this look always involves a lot of beige and hair highlights] Sad again, in a different way.

And lastly, I've lost all my searching skills and would appreciate help. What are good manufacturers for a manicure set (maybe German?) I used to know but can't find anything. I need to buy a small set for DS, not crazily expensive, but long-lasting. Many thanks

yogibutton · 12/12/2023 14:08

on a positive note, last week I went to erdem sample sale and bought a romantic shirt. Who knows if I get any wear out of it. I now come to accept that mistakes are part of buying clothes and it is never truly possible to be completely sure of whether an item will become your most favourite / go-to thing. One can try but so much depends on how it behaves over time, it is not fully predictable.

Hmm, I have thoughts about the it suits me assesment. I don't think it's an objective thing and it really is up to that person, and it doesn't always mean the same thing to people. On MN (especially those polished/expensive threads) it's always this narrow view of showing off the body but in a very bland prim and proper way. It's all very bourgeois tbh, but it suits me can also mean, preferred style, or personality, it's not always about aesthetics.

As for manicure sets, I think Manufactum carry some from Solingen (which is a place rather than a brand, but excellent manufacturers exclusively pretty much concentrated in one area) that are not all that expensive. If you want to pay more I'd go for Rubis (of Switzerland) or for even more money (but exceptionally excellent) Dreiturm. The most well known name you're probably thinking of is Zwilling who I don't think are worth the asking price anymore. Tweezerman also does pretty good tools separately, a bit more sturdy and suited to bigger man hands (assuming DS is son not sister here), don't know if they do sets though, have only ever seen travel sets and those are generally useless.

And, yes, Joseph has been a disappointment for quite a few years now, ever since the last designer left (sorry forgot her name).

Mm I'll definitely keep it in mind, looks like the dinners are a bit random dates with little advance warning so not great to plan around, but cocktail after works just as well, I suppose. I'll have to check trains as they're supposed to stop running for a few months soon due to engineering works Hmm

And I also love that death star bit, it's a classic. I'm also a fan of very un-PC military humour, reminds me of the early days of the internet when it was mostly US military types and tech nerds, I still occasionally find a rare pocket of the internet that houses these two together for some random reason and it always has the best humour and often free of the usual internet polarity nonsense.

I love burgundy too, bo and Galiana. I have just bought a "damson" Arran cardigan on Vinted.

I needed something to make me smile, we've spent 3hrs this morning in A&E with dd2, who we suspected had swallowed her hearing aid battery. All fine now, X-ray and no sign of it.

What you think suits you, is certainly affected by cultural and historic ideas, as we wear different shapes and styles during different times. I think your personal style is probably the biggest factor in what you feel is "you". For instance, pastels are supposed to suit me, but I really don't feel like myself in them. The closest I get is probably I wear some baby blue in summer, but would pair it with darker, tougher textures.
