Don’t think is M Williamson mm …M Williams is leaving G. But successor not disclosed yet, I think?

The bottom middle photo … is it a brooch? Been waiting for a while to wear more brooches.
the cut of the jacket with the thin belt is also great.

mm47 · 03/12/2023 10:14

Whoops I scrambled information thanks for setting the record straight red

ShangPie · 03/12/2023 10:35

You have such a good eye bo - gorgeous contrast between yesterday’s vibrant colours and today’s textured greys.

The bottom-left pic with the one-sleeved jumper is delectable, but the bauble-suit is quite a look!

How exciting that the boots have lived up to expectations micro (or is it yogi?)* *Wishing you many happy years of wearing them. I’d love a good London cobbler rec. Please PM me if you don’t mind sharing.

Amazing news with the skirt red. Being in the right place at the right time to try it on before anyone else got to see it - what a swoop-purchase win. Vince is a great under-the-radar brand - IME they last well but somehow get sold on at ridiculously low prices. I got a past-season olive leather jacket for under a tenner on eBay last month but it’s turned too cold to wear it now. Your skirt should be a lot more versatile!

botemp · 03/12/2023 10:58

mm I think the easiest way to emulate that hairstyle is probably with a leather lace.

I think fleece/teddy fabric was originally always in wool or a wool cotton mix but once they figured out to do it in synthetic where it was a bit more durable that took over. At least I suspect that's the wool 'fur' at Worker's Nobility. I know a German fabric shop that still sells the original version of fleece/teddy in wool.

Poppy, it's good to see my suspicion confirmed that a lot of designer knitwear is not only getting very ambitious in pricing but also not even all that well made. I do wonder, as a lot of handknits can look a bit crafty, is there a sort of haute couture of knitting where you have a very high quality of handcraft? (If so, where to find this without having to knit it yourself?)

WRT MW leaving Givenchy and who should replace him. It kind of depends if they want to continue in the MW style or return to the Givenchy heyday. The latter could sort of fit in with the whole quiet luxury thing (for my own sake I'm against this, the prices are high enough wouldn't want to see it go crazy like Burberry that's pretty much quadrupled in price since Daniel Lee was appointed), I could really see Michael Stewart from Standing Ground fit in here. (Here's an interesting profile about him, he doesn't mention it but his design language very much has that Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany's feel to it, just in a more contemporary/futuristic way.

But if they want to sort of continue on in the vein of MW which definitely is of interest for the men's stuff and that's where the most growth potential is for the brand, then my vote goes to Heliot Emil.

Tbh, and they may very well do that, split up the men's and women's with two designers and then Michael Stewart for women's and Heliot Emil for men would absolutely work well alongside each other. But whoever comes in, I hope to the fashion gods that they'll fix the bags, Claire Wright Keller ruined them and Matthew Williams seemed to have little interest in them when the brand is capable of such beautiful bags (and accessories in general).

Thanks for such a generous post bo (off to research all your references) 👏

Floisme · 03/12/2023 12:44

That suit with the baubles is fab. Be your own Christmas tree (just don't sit down...). Thanks bo

Red, I want you to know made up an outfit with that skirt for every Christmas occasion! (Admittedly it's a fairly quiet Christmas here):
With something sparkly for the work do. (No I don't work there any more but they still ask me and it's the best do I know.)
With chunky jumper and big coat for the death-by-scented candle aka Christmas market trip.
With fairisle cardigan on Christmas day.
With a vintage jacket for a couple of meals out, and for those invitations where they say 'come as you are' but you know they don't mean it. (It went very nicely with that 80s 'Mel and Kim' jacket that I'm still struggling to find a partner for!)
I did fall asleep before I got to New Years Eve but that's just a glorified take-away in this house anyway.

Obviously this was all in my head! But mostly I just pictured it as a fresh and more interesting alternative to jeans or a leather jacket: toughening up something smart, pretty or naice. The art purchase sounds great too.

Papyrophile · 03/12/2023 12:59

Congratulations on the new job red. Probably a good moment for the change!

Hope the new job is wonderful.

microbius · 03/12/2023 13:58

Sorry about the confusion, red! I don't even know how I posted under yogi.. Bo, for the FOMO - the shafts are 43.5 cm. They probably would be slightly shorter in smaller sizes, but maybe not significantly so. Thank you, bo, for the shop link (european links don't anymore show in my google when I am in the UK, so it's literally impossible to find even if the company ships to the UK with taxes included. We are somehow back to the 1990s when you had to actually share links. And it had a better discount than any findable sites - maybe that's the clue as to why)

And thank you for the advent calendar posts. Fabulous pictures. Everyone here got so tired of grey as the default design colour to signal "done" houses, - it is so good to see an imaginative use of grey

red, congratulations on the new job and new presents to yourself. Shang, will pm you with the cobbler.

I went to the Chanel exhibition yesterday with a friend. It was much less crowded than when some of us went - possibly the train strike; possibly they are restricting tickets because it had been too crowded; possibly both. It's definitely worth seeing more than once.

We then went on a trawl of charity shops. First stop was the Oxfam shop off Kings Road that MN had visited - this time I was successful and got a fine wool navy blazer with gold buttons, perfect condition, for £37. Boys, age 13-14. Sometimes it's helpful being short and having no shape.

Then we passed Chelsea Town Hall which was having a Vintage Fair. Obviously we had to pop in, and both ended up buying Edwardian white cotton blouses - very fine Cambric, embroidered in white, so many lovely details and fine work. Mine is very delicate but in generally very condition, and will be lovely for special occasions in the summer.

The fair as a whole was very good with a good mix of periods and including some very special pieces. One stall holder goes to places like Slovakia and Hungary, to to buy original old clothes- she had a fantastic handwoven Hungarian men's shirt with embroidery and an accordion pleated indigo skirt from Slovakia, both over 100 yrs old but in very good condition as they would only have been worn on special occasions. There were beautiful things on many of the stalls.

This is the company that runs them: www.frockmevintagefashion.com/upcoming-fairs

Lots of mink and other fur coats, too. It's interesting that the increase in buying second hand clothes means it seems to be acceptable to wear old furs.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 04/12/2023 09:10

And thanks from me too for the advent calendar, Bo. It is interesting and uplifting.

Redandblue11 · 04/12/2023 15:50

Green is such a great colour!
not sure why I don’t own more of it …🙄

Redandblue11 · 04/12/2023 15:51

And thanks poppy for that vintage info!

mm47 · 04/12/2023 17:01

Love today’s page bo. Especially the metallic/sequinned track pants (?) with the seam down the side. And the sheepskin cloche hat - reminds me of how Holland and Holland used to do them when Isabelle Cawdor and Stella Tennant were designing the women’s range.

oooh poppy excellent treasure hunting - did the vintage Hungarian clothing sellers have a website?

Floisme · 04/12/2023 17:16

Inspired by bo's post to wear a bright green jumper today (even if I've had to change it as not warm enough).

And thank you MmePoppy for that vintage fair info. I've had a rummage through their website and I'll try and make a London trip next year coincide with one of those dates. I'm a little bit Confused at their claim to 'possibly the very first vintage fair in the whole of the UK' but then I don't remember the phrase 'vintage' being coined much (with reference to clothing) before the late 90s so it could be technically correct. I remember the Stables Market in Camden was great in the early 80s so, if that was down to him then I'm impressed.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 04/12/2023 19:03

The Eastern European vendor is on Etsy. This is the amazing pleated skirt I mentioned- the indigo fabric has an almost waxy finish to it. It sways beautifully. It's designed for an apron to be worn over the front, hence the plain material.

Just checking in and enjoying the Advent Calendar (thanks bo) and all the boots and hats talk. I had eyed up that plumo hat, in some fantasy life, where I don't do the school run!

Papyrophile · 05/12/2023 13:48

Some lovely images but I am starting to obsess about over-sized cabas. The green and black ones from the last two days are particularly covetable.

Redandblue11 · 05/12/2023 13:49

The volume and proportions of the top left photo are so good. I want all that outfit, which should be on paper very easy to replicate.

quirky! Where have you been? Hope all is good , missing your chats here.

quirkychick · 05/12/2023 13:54

Hi red, thank you. I think life has just been hectic! I love the skirt.

botemp · 06/12/2023 07:43

quirky welcome back 👋

Sorry, Papyro, I have been lusting after an oversized cabas for a while now, so there will probably be more...

Thank you bo, I missed yesterday's post so I'm behind already. Black eh, it can be so dull and 'Goes with everything' and 'Don't look at me' but, when it works well, there's really nothing quite like it is there? Maybe it's time I went back to it....

Good to see you quirky

quirkychick · 06/12/2023 18:31

Hello 👋 to bo and flo.

I'm coming back to black, I think I can just get away with it with silver hair, enough makeup and not head to toe. I have just bought a replacement black leather jacket from Yoox, which I'm waiting for. My previous one was faux leather and has now peeled badly 😢.

Redandblue11 · 06/12/2023 19:07

agree there with flo.

and olive green such a great one too. I only relatively recently found that it suits me very well.
