Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset and lots of chatter in between.

Yeah, it's not always easy. You're more likely to get tired of a pattern over the years but a plainer fabric might not get your heart beating with the same excitement. Something with an interesting texture could be a good compromise? You'll know it when you see it, I'm sure.

I have not had a foot pop up yet, I'm sorry to whoever's foot that is, but I don't want to see it either...

Red - boucle in a neutral colour is very mid-century and you could add some other colour interest with cushions/throws to tone with existing art.

Redandblue11 · 24/03/2024 08:37

aw Bo! Thanks that setting has solved my problem.
Yes texture is what I have narrowed it down to.
Justme - boucle is super cute, my DH is less convinced due to the texture of boucle.
But we have narrowed a few options now.

botemp · 25/03/2024 13:42

Good to hear that's fixed now, Red.

Interesting article in El Pais I think from the previous weekend. Similar narrative to the UK high street.

I've also been getting into rabbit holes thanks to Vogue India, this shop and this brand were really interesting to browse through. I guess I'm ready for warm weather to arrive already...

There was also an article about shopping in private apartments in Paris in this weekend's FT, I can definitely understand the appeal.

The middle class turns out the lights in France

The crisis experienced by once-popular clothing brands such as Kookaï, Naf Naf, Pimkie and Camaïeu is partly due to Covid and inflation, but it also reflects deeper social changes

red, not sure if it's go with your home or with the recoil sofa, but I think I'll be reupholstering mine when time comes in red velvet :) In the spirit of Vienna

Bo, thanks for the head-ups about the pics. I was already dismayed that one's thread can appear on Daily Hail, often one's pain just for general entertainment; the pics take it to another level, really.

Margaret Howell does not seem to have a sample sale this spring...

Redandblue11 · 25/03/2024 17:00

Red velvet! Nice micro
my blue hues is being reconsidered and now contemplating coral (ish) tones

microbius · 25/03/2024 23:30

Red! I apologise for the autocorrects in my post. Why wouldn't it recognise Ercol!? Scarlet / coral and blue are a very beautiful colour combo. Have you seen Aki Kaurismaki recent film? Mind you, a lot of his films use amazing colour combinations, and hues of red with hues of blue are there, it would seem, in every film.

Galiana · 28/03/2024 03:26

Ahh, just popping into say I was at Manchester Art Gallery today and they've get a temporary Coture exhibition on. It's small but amazing. The pieces they have are incredible.

There was a '59 Balenciaga baby-doll. OMG.

Some early Paco Rabanne.

Early Dior.

If you're near - go!

botemp · 28/03/2024 06:19

Ah that sounds like great fun, Galiana. I saw there's a big fashion exhibition over in Blenheim Palace as well if anyone's near there.

Palace fashion: Westwood and McCartney in Blenheim takeover

Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney and Zandra Rhodes are transforming rooms at Blenheim Palace.

@botemp there were a couple of Westwood pieces and a film was playing from the 80's, it was a chat show and Vivienne had a few models walking, and the audience were LAUGHING at her clothes. It seems crazy that Dame Vivienne Westwood was a comedy piece on mainstream television in the mid-80s. Bonkers.

botemp · 28/03/2024 07:18

Tbh I prefer it when fashion isn't as enmeshed with the mainstream as it seams to be atm. No fun for her at the time though, although she never struck me as the one to care all that much about the opinions of the mainstream. But that's definitely on the media platforms, it really was a thing for years to milk the haha look at the funny clothes point and stare nonsense.

Floisme · 28/03/2024 08:40

I remember that chat show interview with VW and, to be fair, the clothes did look pretty outrageous to the average viewer at the time! But the host (Sue Lawley? Russell Harty? I'm too lazy to look it up, sorry) really egged the audience on and didn't even try to have a proper conversation with her. She wasn't taken at all seriously in the UK at that point. I think the only person on that show who stood up for her was Janet Street Porter who was one of the other guests. (What a rollcall of TV names from the past this is!)

I've seen the Manchester exhibition too and it's really good. But I'm pissed off with Manchester Art Gallery cos several years ago they took over a large, really interesting costume collection, with a lot of pre-20th century clothing, that used to be at Platt Hall, and I don't think any of it's been seen since.

Thanks for the Blenheim Palace tip off. It's only on for a couple of months by the looks of it but definitely worth a trip I think.

Galiana · 28/03/2024 08:41

It was Sue Lawley @Floisme!

Galiana · 28/03/2024 08:45

& yes @Floisme they did take Platt Hall's collection. I have to give them credit for brilliant curation and storing. The pieces they were showing looked absolutely box-fresh.

Galiana · 28/03/2024 08:47

@botemp, she did not care!

Papyrophile · 28/03/2024 08:53

Thanks for the suggestions of the Blenheim show. It's fairly close to my family so that, plus the sculpture exhibition at Compton Verney, should keep me entertained next visit.

Floisme · 28/03/2024 09:32

Galiana · 28/03/2024 08:41

It was Sue Lawley @Floisme!

I can't believe I can remember that. The state of the inside of my head!

I really hope they're looking after the Platt Hall collection and that they'll show it all again at some point. I can understand needing to rehouse it - it's years since I went but even then, the building was pretty crumbly - but I kind of thought they were going to find a space to display it all properly, not store most of it away.

botemp · 28/03/2024 14:11

Fashion musical chairs update, Alessandro Michele has been named the new designer for Valentino which will be interesting, especially on the leather goods and shoes front.

Good to hear it was water off a duck's back for VW, Galiana.

I'm sure you'll be relieved to hear I won't be boring you all with tales of my annual T shirt quest. I've cut it short by buying a few from Monki like this:
https://www.monki.com/en_gbp/clothing/tops/t-shirts/product.soft-long-sleeve-top-black.0827332146.html

I've arguably settled too soon as they're not even 100% cotton (50-50 cotton-modal) but they tick every other box on a long list: full length sleeves, neckline just below the collar bone, relaxed fit and even a choice of colours beyond navy, black and greige (although it helps if you like stripes).

I just couldn't face spending another spring/summer looking for something that probably doesn't exist so I compromised.

They move fast - two of the colours I chose have already sold out.

mm47 · 04/04/2024 16:21

Stop press! Just found an email in my inbox there is a Margaret Howell sample sale next week. Not sure if I can get there but micro I hope I can count on you to report back (if when you go…😘)

Easter Angry I have been in London for a month. A whole month. One quick trip to MH at the start, a pleasant half hour at Perfumer H, ‘Dune’ at the Barbican. The rest of the time holed up in a flat, wishing I was elsewhere.

The MH sample sale email reaches me as I’m unpacking in a hotel hours away …

microbius · 04/04/2024 16:37

Thanks, mm! Annoyingly, MH moved the sample sale by two weeks; so I am actually away when it begins... I might go on the second day - Friday - but I am not sure I fancy hours of queueing on my own...

Flo, thank you for your report on the t-shirt choice. This is a perennial pain, isn't it.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 04/04/2024 18:19

Cough Margaret Howell T shirts cough

Expensive yes, but always lovely and last and last. And the colours don't fade with washing.

I've mentioned before that a MH employee (in the shop!) told me to buy Sunspel as the company actually make the MH ones, and its own brand are cheaper. But based on one example, so not statistically significant, they aren't such good quality as MH.

One kind poster gave me a black MH t shirt they couldn't use, and it's lovely and I'm very grateful - I'm afraid I can't recall who it was.

Floisme · 04/04/2024 19:01

It's the colours though, MmePoppy - I may worship at the shrine of St Margaret Howell but she's the queen of T shirts in black, white and navy, of which the only colour I like (sometimes) is navy. Admittedly there's often an additional 'wild card' colour but that can be hit and miss. And I prefer long sleeves which gives me even less choice.

Sunspel are the same.
