Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset and lots of chatter in between.

(I've removed the usual links to recommended shops and other places guides from the OP because I suspect they're getting very out of date at this point)

17th in the diary! I will try to get access to Philip Phoebe's interview, but gosh, your other link, bo, led me to broetry. It's fascinating and repulsive at the same time.

Redandblue11 · 17/03/2024 21:46

17th in my diary too!

botemp · 18/03/2024 08:59

Harumph, I didn't realise the Eurostar to London has different exchange/cancellation policies than the Eurostar within Europe so I've not managed to book much beyond a hotel. I'm getting antsy as train prices always seem more volatile than plane tickets so if @mm47 and @ShangPie don't chime in today I'm just going to go ahead and book it accepting the risk I might end up there all by myself...

Eek sorry been in Wien on runway back yes to 17th xx

botemp · 19/03/2024 15:38

Dries van Noten is stepping down Sad His last few shows just kept getting better, this feels so abrupt somehow. How does one mourn in florals...

To soothe my soul a little, H&M announced a collab with Rokh that'll launch in April.

How was Vienna btw mm, I hope it lived up to expectations and your outfits worked out.

oh! That is not good news about Dries.

mm47 · 19/03/2024 17:40

Oh dear bo I believe you are a big fan - hope you manage to snap up as many things as you like before it turns into #olddries (or maybe that sort of fandom is reserved for La Philo?) his successor will have a lot to live up to!

Vienna was fun and of course what on earth was I worried about? I was wafting around doing all the tourismo sights (a huge thank you for your list). The best thing was just being there in a capital city but without vast pressing crowds - simply delightful. More anon have house guests xxd

Floisme · 20/03/2024 14:58

Not caught up on the thread properly yet but glad you enjoyed Vienna mm47.

I saw the news about Dries and just assumed he was retiring - have there been shenanigans?

The H&M / Rokh collab looks intriguing even though I don't have much call for office inspired separates these days.

I've just bought a copy of Vogue for the first time in quite a while as I'm curious to see Chioma Nnadi's first edition. It's funny how a printed magasine feels like a bit of naughty luxury these days. I'll probably save it for the coffee shop and cake tomorrow,

botemp · 20/03/2024 15:09

No, nothing nefarious, he's going out on a high note which is very admirable. I'm not overly worried about his successor as he probably gets to appoint them considering he'll still remain involved with the brand. My money's on a woman as that's such a hot issue within fashion atm, but also most of the people that work for him are women and I'm anticipating an in house promotion over someone external. It's the successors after that which would probably concern me.

I'll keep an eye out for Vogue UK under new leadership, although I'll probably stick to an illicit snoop in the shop...

Mm I imagine you mooching around Vienna in that casual snazzy way you have.

My next city break will take me to Edinburgh (which I love) and will make a day trip to St Andrews. Looking forward as is going to be a teen free trip.

I am away atm for work but with no time whatsoever to wander around unfortunately.

Also very envious of the glossy paper between your fingers Flo, I wonder if I can be tempted to get a copy at the airport tomorrow 😼

Papyrophile · 20/03/2024 20:30

Sorry to not be more part of the moment. I think DVN is doing the brilliant thing of going out at the top of his game. I wish more did likewise.

Here, DH is thinking about how best to retire. It's quite intense but we have been through a five year long process of talking about trade deals that have come to nothing. XingJr is about to move out to flat share with his best mate in an area that has vastly better work prospects for him. We are thrilled for him on that score. It also frees us to move. We just don't know where we want to go. North of the M5/M4 interchange gets my vote so we reduce journey/visit drive times by eliminating the two hours it takes to get to Bristol.

Glossy paper is still my favourite substance; I really don't care what's printed on it. Pictures are the best.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 21/03/2024 09:28

I can still remember the first Vogue I bought, and read and read. I was on my way to France to spend 6 weeks improving my French, living with a lovely Frenchwoman, and it all felt so grown up. Looking back, I was incredibly lucky.

Nowadays I read Vogue, Harpers et al on my iPad using a library app and just zip through them. Maybe I'll buy a paper copy to enjoy fully, too.

mm47 · 21/03/2024 17:41

A cup (mug?) of coffee and Vogue sounds an excellent way to pass an hour, flo.

Down here in the sticks Vogue is regularly sold at £2 to try and lure people into buying it rather than “Tractor monthly” or “Farrowing fortnightly” or whatever. I sometimes succumb but really what I need is a radiator to cling to while I stroke the paper and read it, dreaming of escaping to London and untold luxury (not sure how I was planning on getting my hands on said luxuries back in the day, but still) - then I really will be recreating my teenage years #secondchildhood

poppy that’s such a lovely memory. Sometimes I look back and think it’s the feeling of being grown up and alone in the otherness of a foreign country that was so breathtakingly exciting.

red Edinburgh how lovely! I was at university up there and it is such a beautiful city. Funnily enough the guest we had to stay on Tuesday lives in Glasgow and she said that although Glasgow used to be much more fashion conscious and trend aware, it’s now Edinburgh which is the place to go shopping. I love Stockbridge, lots of lovely food shops and independents, do you know it?

bo sounds like Dries really is a top bloke - not many people seem to go out on a high like that 👏

eek just realised I’ve done that awful name checking thing (and I haven’t even said good plan to you papyrophile)

sorry bani 🤡😘 I just couldn’t resist

mm47 · 21/03/2024 18:01

I really enjoy odd shop signs. Can’t remember which museum I saw this fabulous space cadet mer-baby (it reminds me of Jimmy Somerville, didn’t he buzz about in Orlando or am I hallucinating on hot chocolate?) And the hunters in the snow printed teddies are for you castle - that room with all those Breughels was spectacular to see. Just - wow.

Breaking news: Pierpaolo Piccioli is leaving Valentino. As much as I liked entertaining the brief idea that he was moving to Dries van Noten and after immediately dismissing that pondering the amazing possibility that DvN was moving to Valentino but I think he was sincere about retirement, ah, it would have been so interesting though... Now wondering if PP is going to Givenchy where they hope he'll do similar as his former Valentino co-designer at Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri, in reviving Dior. Do the betting agents in the UK offer odds on fashion designer musical chairs?

OP posts:
mm47 · 22/03/2024 18:53

It really is musical chairs! I bet there would be a bookie somewhere bo if you would accept their odds…. 🤡

Redandblue11 · 23/03/2024 09:03

I don’t think I can keep up. Now I truly don’t know who is where or who moved.

Floisme · 23/03/2024 09:35

I lost track a while ago. Has the attrition rate actually intensified or is it more that a lot of the big names are reaching retirement age?

Vogue was enjoyable but didn't hold my attention for long. 24 hours later the main things I can remember are a couple of articles on vintage (ultimately unsatisfying) and a scattergun shopping section. But I did warm to Chioma Nnadi after reading her editorial about spending her teenage years hanging around Charing Cross Rd to watch the fashion students. She sounds like someone who understands the thrill of getting dressed, so that's promising, although how much she's actually in charge as 'head of editorial content' is another matter.

botemp · 23/03/2024 09:36

Just a heads up, it looks like MN is now using pictures posted by users to advertise within the site (some additional ones within the post as well by the looks of it). I'm aware that the T&C basically say they own everything we post and it's theirs to do what they want with, so tough.

Anyhow, I don't really like the idea of seeing a picture of myself popping up between random threads as an ad so I won't be posting anymore mod shots (not that I have in a while, but that's mostly down to laziness, now I just have a good excuse and it's a crap one to be fair, I'm sure they'll mostly want things that are likely to get lots of clicks like leggings, high street stuff, Sweaty Betty, etc.).

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 23/03/2024 09:42

The advert algorithm is seriously skewed on here. I'm currently being pestered by ads for Yours Clothing. Why ? It's not been referred to on any thread recently and I've never searched for it.

botemp · 23/03/2024 09:43

X-post with Flo, I'm not sure tbh. There was a brief period of lots of designers leaving due to burn out and then never returning. The ones that seem to be leaving now are the peers who stuck it out so they really might just be at the end of their tethers.

Might also be the pandemic, had to hold the fort during that time and then you couldn't really leave right after without putting a lot of jobs under you at risk so now is probably around the time things are steady enough again to move on/leave?

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 23/03/2024 09:57

Thanks for the heads up bo regarding the ads and user photos. I saw the look change on my phone (I still use the web not the app) and initially I thought it was only for posters links and that sort, then in the middle of it I was this morning someone’s foot in a sandal, not an ad but someone’s photo with all the background of their room 😯a bit blurred but the bad sort of blurring that I would do… which when seen pop up in a bigger photo is a bit uncomfortable (for me at least).
I don’t want my photo randomly out there either.

Redandblue11 · 23/03/2024 10:00

Not fashion related but fabric related , I am in the middle of choosing upholstery fabric for a vintage Ercol sofa I picked up at very good price (obvs the upholstery price will negate any bargain I have in the actual sofa itself). Gosh is so difficult to make a decision, so many colours and shades!

Redandblue11 · 23/03/2024 10:02

I have white walls and a few bits of artwork, so while I love the idea of pattern etc in this occasion I don’t want anything that would compete with the art.
