Is this outfit work appropriate

I have an event at work soon, it’s an all-day general leadership meeting with around 50-100 people in attendance. I’m not sure how many will attend. In my chain of command, only the big boss might go, who I’ve never met in person. The rest of the attendees are people I have never come across before but could network with. So I was thinking to go for something professional but different to be memorable/stand out.

therefore what do you think of a suit tailored like this but in this colour?

I haven’t found an exact suit I like yet but just wanted to see if I’m on the right track or if I should just wear something else?

If there will be senior management there and leaders then I think this will be fine. The Reiss one is beautiful.

Mariandel · 28/10/2023 19:18

The Reiss suit is appropriate but goodness it's dull. The other one is better.

mynameiscalypso · 28/10/2023 19:20

They're perfectly nice suits but I go to a lot of senior industry events and workshops and I'd look very overdressed if I wore that. I'd be wearing something like skinny black trousers, ankle boots and an oversized silk shirt personally.

khlomoney · 28/10/2023 19:21

I’m not sure about the Reiss colour! My hair is long & blonde/brunette - something about the currently trendy chocolate shades pop on me…

Not the Mango horror. The Reiss one is great.

dammit88 · 28/10/2023 19:28

I love the Reiss one

Oooo interesting!

I actually wore that exact outfit the last away day but my trousers were cream. I pretty much blended in. I don’t want to look too “trendy” but I could do with an edge in this event.

Hmm maybe I could do black trousers but keep the suit jacket?

Any alternative ideas appreciated too! 😂

There's no edge to that Reiss suit. If your event is being held at a goodish hotel the receptionists will be better dressed.

I'm inclined to agree but it would be helpful to know what industry.

GrumpyOldCrone · 28/10/2023 19:35

I think a brown suit can look amazing, but not if it’s polyester. You need wool to express the colour properly. (Not sure that makes sense… I know what I mean but I’m struggling with the words for it.)

The colour of the Reiss suit is fine for blondes or brunettes as long as you have a cool or neutral skin tone. If you have a warm skin tone it might make you look like you need a holiday. And if brown suits you, it’s quite likely you have a warm skin tone.

Does your budget stretch to wool or wool blend? If not, it’s probably a good idea to consider other colours.

Greenshake · 28/10/2023 19:37

Oh get the Reiss one in that gorgeous colour!

Agree.

It would help to know what industry. In my industry, a brown trouser suit would be considered dull and drab yet somehow also too informal due to the colour. You'd be memorable but not for the right reasons.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 28/10/2023 19:45

The Reiss one is nice but last time I got a Reiss skirt suit I didn’t wear it nearly as often as I thought I would.

khlomoney · 28/10/2023 19:52

@Mariandel @HundredMilesAnHour

Government event held at a regional hub. I haven’t been to this type of event before however Civil service staff tend not to dress fully corporate

@GrumpyOldCrone can you find any examples online? I haven’t been shopping by material…I think my skin leans neutral, so I’d consider cool/neutral/warm tones. I actually own these two items which are different browns but work on me!

Sweatshirt

Blazer

Zara link above might not work, it’s this blazer

If autumnal shades work and you want to stand out what about something like this
from The Fold.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 28/10/2023 19:59

Oh yes, that demonstrates what I meant about brown wool. I think it’s a lot nicer than the Mango suit.

khlomoney · 28/10/2023 20:07

@Lookatmytoes I wasn’t sure about the dress but the blouse is nice! I tend to wear outfits like that to work.

@PerditaProvokesEnmity Photo 1 looked a bit scary but tbh photo 6 is my usual style! I can see myself wearing that on a night out even with a nice body suit and heels. But then I suppose the question is whether this aesthetic suits the event…

Striking dress, but risks being compared to a Quality Street by irreverent and fashion blind male colleagues.

It's completely OTT for a civil service daytime work event. It's the sort of dress I would expect to see at evening client events in banking or private client law firms

PegasusReturns · 28/10/2023 20:14

I’d avoid a brown suit unless it’s excellent quality and fits immaculately. Otherwise you run the risk of looking like shit. Literally and figuratively.

If I wanted to stand out and there’s no need to be corporate I’d wear a fitted midi dress; boots and a blazer. But last time I suggested a blazer and dress it started a bun fight, so I guess it’s horses for courses 🤷‍♀️

Comefromaway · 28/10/2023 20:15

I love the colour and the cut of the Reiss suit. The brown Mango I don’t like.
