Is this outfit work appropriate

I have an event at work soon, it’s an all-day general leadership meeting with around 50-100 people in attendance. I’m not sure how many will attend. In my chain of command, only the big boss might go, who I’ve never met in person. The rest of the attendees are people I have never come across before but could network with. So I was thinking to go for something professional but different to be memorable/stand out.

therefore what do you think of a suit tailored like this but in this colour?

I haven’t found an exact suit I like yet but just wanted to see if I’m on the right track or if I should just wear something else?

It looks nothing like that.

Agreed - it looks nothing like factory overalls.

I'm amazed that at least 2 posters think a jumpsuit made of flimsy, floaty material marketed as evening wear is appropriate office wear. Although a modern take on Geordie lass workwear in cotton or denim would be.

Mumof3children · 31/10/2023 07:20

Sorry, I think both suits are very dull. Brown never stands out. Is there another colour you like?

jupitermonket · 31/10/2023 08:18

GrumpyOldCrone · 28/10/2023 19:35

I think a brown suit can look amazing, but not if it’s polyester. You need wool to express the colour properly. (Not sure that makes sense… I know what I mean but I’m struggling with the words for it.)

The colour of the Reiss suit is fine for blondes or brunettes as long as you have a cool or neutral skin tone. If you have a warm skin tone it might make you look like you need a holiday. And if brown suits you, it’s quite likely you have a warm skin tone.

Does your budget stretch to wool or wool blend? If not, it’s probably a good idea to consider other colours.

Fully agree with this. Brown polyester is an abomination. If brown is your colour, get the highest quality fabric you can find to make you really pop. Otherwise you’ll just look drab.

(Same applies to green made using cheap fabrics and cheap dyes - everything green these days is the colour of Mike from Monsters Inc! 🤣)

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 31/10/2023 08:30

I love the Reiss one. The color is stunning.

Mememe9898 · 31/10/2023 09:36

Style is so personal and you’ll have a gazillion different opinions which will probably create analysis paralysis.
I would just choose what you personally feel comfortable in and stick to your own personal style. Personally I’ve never asked for people’s fashion advice as I just wear what I like. I’ve always had compliments on my clothes particularly pre kids as now I just throw on whatever is comfortable.
It's hard to say what’s the best option but for a day time work conference I would wear a midi dress or short dress. Something comfortable but looks smart too.

PloddingAlong21 · 31/10/2023 10:05

The Reiss one is perfect for what you want. It’s a lovely cut and the colour is different but not wildly different. Professional but still trendy.

A brown suit would literally look like poo. Don’t do it OP!!

Cantonet · 31/10/2023 10:08

I love the berry Reiss suit.
I love Browns as well.
They're bang up to date.
I do get that as a 27 year old you want to be taken seriously & that can be a little tricky. I'm not sure posting here is terribly helpful for you though. As MN always seems to end in a bun fight these days. With weird & wonderful suggestions.

As a few PPs say brown is a very tricky colour to wear in a cheap fabric, as it’ll look just that, cheap.

An expensive suit in any colour is an investment but been more so in brown.

I had a similar plum colour trouser suit (Joseph) a few years ago and it was very classy and I got lots of wear out of it.

Pipsquiggle · 31/10/2023 10:16

Hi OP there are some great suggestions on here.

All I would say, if you want to get noticed or be remembered, you have to wear a bright colour - could be your whole outfit or an element but you need to stand out.

I am thinking bright dress, biker jacket, boots or trainers

Onethingatatime23 · 31/10/2023 10:53

Gorgeous Reiss suit. I'd remember someone in an outfit like that as I'd be asking them where they got it from.

Onethingatatime23 · 31/10/2023 11:01

But then I work in an environment where I am massively outnumbered by overweight middle aged bald men wearing generic grey, black and navy suits and other very dull office clothing. I always stand out rather because I am female, not bad looking, and don't generally wear black, grey or navy suits. A plum trouser suit with a cream turtle neck would be stand out enough for me.

And many professional settings such as law and finance firms are very dull indeed in terms of clothing. A plum-coloured suit would allow you to stand out in the right way rather than due to some kind of wardrobe malfunction.

If you work in high fashion that may be different!

Imisssleep2 · 31/10/2023 11:49

It's professional but I wouldn't say it's memorable, not unless your planning to get drunk and start swinging it round your head, people will remember you then, but prob not for the right reasons

FrillyGoatFluff · 31/10/2023 12:51

I have a similar meeting later this week OP.

I'll probably wear a thin knit, ribbed, knee length black dress, 3/4 length sleeves and round neck (new look, they have all sorts of necklines/sleeves/colours in at the moment). Either black pointy patent ballet pumps or boots if it's wanging down when I leave.

Last time I wore a bright red wrap dress and leopard print ballet pumps. It wasn't subtle, but I am in marketing, they expect me to be a bit ridiculous.

Danielle2500 · 31/10/2023 13:15

I would go with a wool dress from Hobbs, similar to the one below:
https://www.hobbs.com/product/petite-margot-wool-dress/0223-5727-1049L04-GREEN-MULTI.html#navAjax=true&imageType=model&is=true&sz=60&start=57&cgid=clothing-dresses&isSecondPage=false&prefn1=length&prefv1=Short|Knee%20Length&pid=0223-5727-1049L04-GREEN-MULTI&pos=61
Style it with black tights and boots, I think it’s the perfect combo of casual & smart.
You could find dresses like this on Vinted cheaper too.

ittakes2 · 31/10/2023 15:29

whatever you choose very important to buy a colour which suits your skin tone. I know you said you suit cool, neutral, and warm…but you can’t. You can’t be both cool and warm!! If you look better in brown / cream you have a warm skin tone (and it sounds like you might). And if you look better in black / white you have a cool skin tone.

parkrunpal · 31/10/2023 16:39

Civil Service leadership person here. I think you're overthinking it. In my (many years of) experience women at this type of f2f event will be in cigarette trousers and a nice blouse type outfits, often with smart trainers. Plenty of jumpsuits of all types. Or John Lewis KIN boxy type dresses with skirts and boots. A suit would stand out as significantly smarter / more dressy than others in the room. The cut of the Reiss one is lovely, but I would worry about being seen as 'trying too hard' (sorry!)

Mosaic123 · 01/11/2023 08:35

Could you wear a statement brooch or necklace on your clothes.

Something vintage or slightly quirky (but not humorous) would elevate a plain outfit.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 01/11/2023 11:34

I love those Hobbs dresses! I can never quite imagine myself in modern office wear, but those are great 👍

Sorrynotsorry22 · 01/11/2023 18:03

Power dressing has sort of had its day as far as I'm aware.
Personally l'd explore the smart casual vibe in a style you feel comfortable in.

Lovetoplan · 01/11/2023 18:22
  1. A suit in a restrained modern classic cut would be great.
  2. Always wear your best colour to an event.
  3. It is good to stand out a bit as long as it is appropriate.
  4. Mixing textures can work well eg wool suit, silk shirt in similar colours.

Meant to add this one

Thanks- you’ve got me shopping for clothes I don’t need and can’t afford now! 😂🙂

Mac11 · 01/11/2023 18:35

Looks terrific

Parr1960 · 01/11/2023 18:36

Perfect, in either colour, very classy!

anonibubble · 01/11/2023 19:01

I like the first suit and the colour it is. You can dress it up or down so it’s more useful. Don’t like the mango one at all

anonibubble · 01/11/2023 19:03

And maybe wear a skinny rib jumper so you can ditch the jumper if you feel overdressed.
