Is this outfit work appropriate

I have an event at work soon, it’s an all-day general leadership meeting with around 50-100 people in attendance. I’m not sure how many will attend. In my chain of command, only the big boss might go, who I’ve never met in person. The rest of the attendees are people I have never come across before but could network with. So I was thinking to go for something professional but different to be memorable/stand out.

therefore what do you think of a suit tailored like this but in this colour?

I haven’t found an exact suit I like yet but just wanted to see if I’m on the right track or if I should just wear something else?

If you want to stand out a bit, I'd go for a dress - simple cut, solid colour that's not black or grey - a dark red, deep blue maybe? I'm a civil servant and for an event like this I'd wear knee length black dress and opaque black tights, I wouldn't stand out but I'd be comfortable and feel appropriately dressed (getting older is great!)

Though I think the original Reiss suit looks great, colour is good. Brown doesn't give off leadership vibes to me.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 29/10/2023 19:18

I really like the original Reiss one you linked. I don’t like the oversized blazers at all! They have a look of little girl dressing up in her dad’s suit jacket..

Kellioo · 29/10/2023 18:42

@khlomoney I think that could work with fitted 3/4 trousers

I don't think it would work because it's not a knitted vest over a cotton shirt but a combination of a knitted vest with bits of a cotton shirt attached to it. Personally I think these 2 in 1 hybrid pieces don't work.

I'm a bit confused about what you actually want. The outfits suggested by Kellio are fine for the event but they're not "edgy" in the slightest - especially the one with heels. Neither is that Reiss suit.

If you want something that will be suitable for the day, they're all fine, but none of them are edgy or noticeable. The Zara combination top is noticeable - but not in a good way and it's not edgy either.

If you want to stand out, wear a great pop of colour. I'd be looking for a stunning blouse to pair with your normal bottoms. Think jewel coloured. I've got amazing purple, green, red, pink, blue tops that really pop in a dark suit. In a room of dull colours, a pop of colour is easy to spot.

Are you joking?

Unless you're Amish, I wouldn't wear this OP.

Really, members of Amish communities must be sick to death of reading this phrase on MN. And it says so much about a poster’s fear of anything outside their own bubble of familiarity.

I do wish MNHQ would ban it.

Thank you.

So far as the fear of anything outside their own bubble of familiarity, it's from Jigsaw. I looked for mainstream, high street options, but even that's too much.

Honestly amazed how many women here find brown dull, drab, and meh. Brown is a far better option for most women than black.

OP, if you think you need a suit, want a suit, and would be comfortable in a suit then get one. I would be looking to jazz it up and casualise it with a knitted top underneath though, maybe even a polo. That way you can show off a far more interesting colour combination. And if you feel over dressed you can remove your jacket and pull things back. Whereas a blouse and trouser can look equally overdressed even with the jacket removed.

Asides from this, I am a personal stylist and would recommend you enlisting someone if you’re serious about your image/career. Women online will only tell you what they like. But you’re the one who has to wear it and feel good. I think you said you’re petite and half the recommendations here aren’t suitable for petite proportions.

If you suit a shade of brown, there's a shade of burgundy that will suit you just as well without matching horse/dog/cat/human shit of some description.

Many women don't suit black as well as they think they do. If you suit warm colours, avoid black.

I don’t know a huge amount about Amish communities, but I’d be really surprised if they were on the internet, and particularly on a Style and Beauty forum. Happy to be corrected.

I really like that dress, and I have a similar one. It doesn’t match my sense of what the OP was looking for, but I think it would be fine for the event.

I couldn’t care less. Black is chic and can be edgy, glamorous, fierce and sexy. Brown is exactly what a middle aged, middle of the road, dullard would wear.

Maybe the colour is more flattering but no one is noticing that your skin looks 3° brighter because they cannot get over the awfulness of the clothes.

i think the idea of getting your colours done is nonsense. I've never noticed this effect in real life on me or anyone else. In real life I would notice someone wearing the Jigsaw dress but not the Reiss trouser suit.

Floisme · 30/10/2023 08:22

I know nothing about work events any more (retired) but I do know that chocolate brown is a great colour. I'm wearing an old brown jumper this morning and the number of different coloured strands in it when you look closely is phenomenal. And no, I haven't had my colours done.

I suspect a lot of people also haven’t realised brown is in fashion this season!

Yes! It’s been trending since the pandemic at least - and has slowly taken over my wardrobe 😁

Just to throw a spanner in the works - potentially awful weather for this event so might have to pull out wellies or anticipate cancellation!

Wonderful! The chocolate/turd shade remains drab and depressing, no matter what vogue says.

Sooty20235 · 30/10/2023 09:16

The Reiss suit is gorgeous, and wouldn't look out of place at the events I go to (consultancy/networking type events). Colour is lovely and just unusual enough to show you are confident in your choices without being garish.

I can't stand some of the baggy rags people have posted here.

Love a classically lined suit picked out in a colour that suits your skin tone. It will last you years and years and you won't look like a victim of the latest glossy magazine marketing campaigns.

Comefromaway · 30/10/2023 09:38

Brown may be in fashion and I have worn brown myself but the one lined was particularly awful.

KnickerlessParsons · 30/10/2023 09:43

mynameiscalypso · 28/10/2023 19:20

They're perfectly nice suits but I go to a lot of senior industry events and workshops and I'd look very overdressed if I wore that. I'd be wearing something like skinny black trousers, ankle boots and an oversized silk shirt personally.

It's much better to be overdressed than underdressed.
That suit is lovely.

So many stick-in-the-muds on this thread. I love this and it wouldn't look out of place in a conference.

Some people really have an issue with women showing style.

Thank you. I was surprised at the comment about it not being appropriate. I don't see why not. The OP said she wanted to stand out and I think this jumpsuit would definitely be something people noticed.

Comtesse · 30/10/2023 12:01

It’s a civil service event! Not an ad agency or music industry or new media! And it’s a meeting / conference not a cocktail party. Some of these ideas are a bit out there….

Would wear something with a striking colour. I went to a big govt conference last month and the head of profession for like 3k people wore a red trouser suit (cropped trousers), white t shirt and white trainers. She looked great!

khlomoney · 30/10/2023 13:20

I need to rethink the whole outfit as there will likely be heavy rain & heavy wind. My journey will involve walking so I’ll need more practical stuff to withstand elements. I was thinking an outfit similar to this? Raincoat on top when outside but will switch into a blazer once I’m under cover. Yes or no?
