I have an event at work soon, it’s an all-day general leadership meeting with around 50-100 people in attendance. I’m not sure how many will attend. In my chain of command, only the big boss might go, who I’ve never met in person. The rest of the attendees are people I have never come across before but could network with. So I was thinking to go for something professional but different to be memorable/stand out.

therefore what do you think of a suit tailored like this but in this colour?

I haven’t found an exact suit I like yet but just wanted to see if I’m on the right track or if I should just wear something else?

Personally I think that looks like a child sent to school on their first day of high school in their dad's or older brother's blazer.

I need to rethink the whole outfit as there will likely be heavy rain & heavy wind. My journey will involve walking so I’ll need more practical stuff to withstand elements. I was thinking an outfit similar to this? Raincoat on top when outside but will switch into a blazer once I’m under cover. Yes or no?

This is nice but not sure about those boots with it, maybe knee high boots.

That's a cocktail dress!

LittleMonstera · 30/10/2023 16:13

I'm a G7 CS and from various off site events in the last couple of years only two people's outfits stick in my head... a woman wearing a really nice knee length, well fitted/tailored, floral dress and another woman in an ankle length, pleated silk skirt and soft, cream, cashmere turtleneck sweater. Both had nice heels too. They stood out because they looked confident in themselves and comfortable in their own style (as well as the clothes being beautiful!) I would wear whatever makes you feel like this. If you go a suit type ensemble though I think high waist and wide leg trousers are much more of a statement than skinny fit.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 30/10/2023 16:29

It's centuries since I was 27 ... I can't imagine at that age asking a group of women, probably all considerably older than I am, what I should wear to work. (And even if I did I'd probably find their suggestions laughable.)

I’m not sure about the Reiss colour! My hair is long & blonde/brunette - something about the currently trendy chocolate shades pop on me…

How can your hair be blonde / brunette?
They're 2 totally different colours.

Perhaps because the internet didn't exist then? Brown may be in fashion but people also need to look good! That blazer you recommended.. why?

Mariandel · 30/10/2023 17:06

No. That's another evening reception at a banking or private client law firm dress, or private view at a gallery.

I was speaking today at a training conference for others working in my sector. Not saying what sector, but private sector and involves clients with money.

3 male speakers all in suits and ties. I wore a black and white checked ",eugh, Amish" dress and flat black patent shoes. The other female speaker wore a sort of Cefinn style striped, wrap day dress and mid heeled courts.

The audience (female) were skirts and jumpers/ tops or trousers and jumpers/ tops, or Seasalt style comfortable but not scruffy cotton/ jersey / knitted dresses, one or two jackets. Male attendees were chinos and jackets or jumpers, a couple of ties. None of the attendees wore suits

None of the attendees was as smartly dressed as the 5 speakers but from what I could see from the platform none of the attendees wore jeans or trainers.

So many stick-in-the-muds on this thread. I love this and it wouldn't look out of place in a conference.

Some people really have an issue with women showing style.

Oh believe me having just been a speaker at a private sector industry conference today (where I was thinking about this thread) that jumpsuit would look bizarre and out of place. The website itself clearly markets it as evening wear. (And sorry but to my eyes it's very dull evening wear)

That would have fitted in at the conference I was speaking at today, if you were an attendee but not presenting a paper.

You don't need a blazer. MN is obsessed with blazers.

The reiss berry jacket with the slim leg berry trousers is by far the best outfit imo! Classic and classy, and not to try hard formal but not super casual either. Looks effortless to me, obviously the model being tall, slim and pretty helps make it look lovely though 😂 but I think it looks like a good investment piece!

Blah12345678999 · 30/10/2023 19:32

Not too try hard formal*

Blah12345678999 · 30/10/2023 19:33

If everyone else at the event is looking that great and more then they are one stylish bunch you work with!

I’ve just bought this knit dress from Phase Eight, and the quality is great. Planning to wear it with black boots and a burgundy leather biker jacket, but could be worn with heels and a long coat

I think a brown suit is a great shout - traditionally smart but trendy. Always better to be either wildly overdressed or underdressed imo.

Nearlybackatschool · 30/10/2023 20:50

Love a Hobbs dress, smart classy and lasts forever. Would wear with ankle boots

As a civil servant I agree with PP - most people in our office in the North wear jeans/chinos/casual in the office, so formal dress up would be a collared shirt for the men and a smart dress/trousers and blouse for the ladies.

You'd wear that dress as an office dress???

@Nearlybackatschool agreed - that's the right sort of look.

It looks nothing like that.

  1. Brown.
  2. All-in-one garment. You can call it a onesie. You can call it a jumpsuit. But my dad will call it a boilersuit and I will call it overalls and if it's brown or blue then I will think of mechanics.

So where's the horse you're going to groom in that? The sweater vest worn with leggings and knee boots makes me think of the stable lasses in gilets and jodphurs from when I took riding lessons. If you wore a long-sleeved sweater or cardigan, you'd lose the horsey-person look.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 31/10/2023 00:59

@Mummylovesmonkeys I think the word "bodycon" in the dress summary indicates that it's not for work.

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 31/10/2023 01:25

I would never have imagined a dark brown when hearing the word 'mango'!
More likely I'd be thinking green or a creamy yellowish shade!
If you go with the Reiss outfit team it with a pretty blouse, but light in colour or you'll look quite dowdy, in my honest opinion!
Something more summery, as there are far too many dark colours at this time if the year.

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 31/10/2023 01:26

Nearlybackatschool,
I love both of your options. But I do love reds and also tartans!
