Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

YES to the people who have wished for the comeback of larders/pantries. God they were so much better than lots of silly wall or under-counter cupboards, stretching up or hunkering down all the time, with different items stored all over the place. I grew up in a very small semi (50s build) but we still had one - a door and three walls with nice wide shelves, like a large walk-in cupboard. Why aren't modern kitchens built with them?

They were the most useful thing I ever bought for mine. Took the stress out of airports and shopping mall visits.

Most of us use them where I live, busy roads you see, you can buy them in Boots up the high street.

Livingtoworkworkingtolive · 17/09/2023 13:29

Wearing more than just a bra and shorts that don't cover even half your arse when out food shopping.

Great idea, very sensible.

I know! I got a couple of lovely cashmere cardigans from M&S last winter, and cotton ones from H&M.
See the perplexion about slips!

Almost every brand or shop that sells knitwear sells cardigans- from the maddest high end avant garde to the lowliest high street. (I'm not seriously suggesting you all shop here !)

Glass bottles instead of plastic.

sadaboutmycat · 17/09/2023 13:39

I live in a student city and they're used by all ages here. You're the only person judging yourself for using one. No one cares!

Yes, all of these.

Manners, especially please and thank you.

Dressing up properly for things.

I agree to all of this.

I have a lovely apron I use all the time. It gives full rein to my pioneer wife fantasies and is so easy to wash etc

You know those “kilt on a vest” things little girls wore in the 70s?
I want one my size. All the faff and bulk of the buckle and overlap would be gone, and I’d just make sure my woolly jumper covered the join.

sadaboutmycat · 17/09/2023 13:41

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 10:22

Isn't this S and B? I thought op meant clothes.

Well she said shopping trollies so...

I had one - they were brilliant! I think I was about 8.

Dickies are certainly making a comeback after Harry Styles wore them with a pearl necklace.
I wear mine (three) with light jumpers or sweatshirts to avoid the “scraggy chicken neck” look.

justasking111 · 17/09/2023 13:45

What are dickies?

justasking111 · 17/09/2023 13:45

Fake collars (not attached to a shirt) that you can wear under a jumper.

Echobelly · 17/09/2023 13:47

Giving definite answers to invitations, however casually the invitation was made, and not dropping out unless you are unwell or have a family event or issue to attend to. 'I'm a bit skint/a bit tired/I've just realised getting there is a bit difficult' are not good enough reasons, especially if given just as the other person is heading out of the door.

Slow fashion. Mending clothes and making them last. Wearing natural fibres - I went in Next yesterday and it was wall to wall polyester as far as the eye could see.

Most of my clothes are things I've had for years, even if they were bought from 'fast fashion' chains though. Ie Primark pyjamas 10 years old, Select Jacket that I wore for work this week 28 years old. All my family take good care of clothes so they last and lady wherever they were bought from IME.

sadaboutmycat · 17/09/2023 13:48

MerylSqueak · 17/09/2023 10:55

Everyone uses shopping trollies in Spain, not just young 'ens.

I'd like a shoe repair shop back in my town. We haven't had one for years as there was no demand due to fast fashion prices being so low. Crazy.

Not even a Timpson? How odd!

I saw A Haunting In Venice yesterday, which was absolute garbage, but so loved the tailored suits and neat hairstyles for both women and men. Course, everybody was a lot thinner in the 40s.

Ooh what did you think of Tina Fey as Ariadne Oliver? I could not cope with that.

I liked the film but mainly because Ds1 (13) adored it. Have not read the original- but that's okay neither had the film makers it seems.

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/09/2023 13:50

DD3 (18) is going to uni next week and she wanted a wheely trolley. Her dad went on and on about how ridiculous she will look with an "old lady trolley". Thankfully she is far more sensible than he is, and when I took her uni shopping the first thing we bought was that! Her father isnt impressed by all accounts but she made her point by proudly waltzing off out with it to fetch her grandfathers shopping!

Thank you. I have a fake fur collar like this but wear it outside a jumper. Also have a fake fur snood type collar. Forget to wear them every winter. I do like a sheer long scarf to wear around my neck. So cosy

EdithStourton · 17/09/2023 13:52

Getting a deposit on a returned glass bottle.
If you can't be arsed to take the bottle or jar back yourself, just leave them out and someone eager to earn a few quid will ensure they vanish sharpish.

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 13:53

@ValkyrieAssassin I hated all of it- including Ariadne Oliver being turned into an American- because I am an obsessive Christie fan and had read the original book. Liked the costumes and the cinematography though. But segue!
