Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

@ValkyrieAssassin I love that housework apron and what a.brilliant price. I've been trying to order a blue one but when I input it, it keeps changing to pale grey which would be less practical .. fab idea and a lot nicer than a nylon housecoat.

You know those “kilt on a vest” things little girls wore in the 70s?
I want one my size. All the faff and bulk of the buckle and overlap would be gone, and I’d just make sure my woolly jumper covered the join.

They were great and you didn't have a waistband digging into you because they sat so nicely.

pollo8 · 17/09/2023 13:59

For the dickey enthusiasts! Looks they came back and promptly left again, haha.

Not sure why anyone would want a half-pinny? It's my top half that gets splattered when cooking. I've got an old-fashioned navy striped apron from a catering supply shop, just like my Granny had.

Don't know what a dickey is? Here's everything you need to know.

Slips (full or half) are brilliant. Dresses and skirts hang so much better. My late mother wore one every day of her life (not a trouser wearer)

Crucible · 17/09/2023 14:04

We have a community from South East Asia where I live and Jane Austen style bonnets are definitely in and very serious about sun protection. I love them.

sadsack78 · 17/09/2023 14:06

I wish pressed powder still came in beautiful compacts. You can buy vintage ones online but it'd be lovely to bring them back. They were refillable too.

Housecoats, like my great aunt used to wear over her clothes whilst cleaning. I know housecoat can mean different things; I don't mean a dressing gown! I mean the nylon things with gingham or floral patterns. Seems like a very practical garment to me.

Also, cookers with eye level grills.

Yes mum had one in the 60s or a tabard

greengreengrass25 · 17/09/2023 14:12

I always wear a slip,with a dress

Precipice · 17/09/2023 14:19

All this talk of slips makes me think of lining. I don't want to have to wear an extra layer! I think all outer items of clothing should be able to be worn on their own (for what they cover; clearly a shirt cannot be worn without trousers or a skirt below), which means they must be opaque on their own. Meanwhile, nowadays almost all white tops seem to be see-through - even if it's not quite so light enough that you can see the body clearly, the bra shows through.

Boujibroke · 17/09/2023 14:22

Oh lovely, thanks very much @Magpiecomplex and @ChocolateCinderToffee those are lovely.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 17/09/2023 14:33

This is going to make me sound about 90, but: people to get dressed properly instead of walking around in sportswear, which imo is only suitable for either playing sport in or watching sport in.

RisingSunn · 17/09/2023 14:37

Shopping trolleys have made a return and not just for the the elderly. I have one and it’s very handy.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/09/2023 14:37

wool jumpers that are 100% wool. Also, wool coats that are not half polyester or whatever. If I'm spending £200 on a coat I do not want it to be half plastic.

CheshireCat1 · 17/09/2023 14:37

Less motorists on the road and more buses.
Park wardens and huts in parks that loan out play equipment, cricket sets, bats and balls, volleyball nets etc. Used to have them in our local parks.
Less takeaways outlets and more home cooked food.
More board games and less television.
More outdoor swimming and paddling pools.
Families living near each other.
Shops back in the high street and no retail parks.

catslikeparties · 17/09/2023 14:39

Oh yes slips are a must with lots of dresses, otherwise you can see straight through them!

If you want to use one of those push me/ pull you shopping wheelie things just get one. I did. You can still buy them. I got mine from a general hardware type store.

I wish leg warmers would come back. So practical in winter.

I also wish socks and sandals was a thing as that is the ultimate in practical wear.

Basically anything that is practical clothing I love.

I do like a nice hat too. I wear a summer hat and woolly in winter but I do wish more fancy hats were in fashion too.

Winter42 · 17/09/2023 14:52

I have a wheelie bag for when I walk to Aldi. My kids are mortified by it but I don't care!

TroysMammy · 17/09/2023 14:52

I've got a shopping trolley on wheels and a paper parasol for the sun. I'm now fancying a wicker shopping basket just like the one I had for cookery lessons in school in the 1980s.

I've never heard of "Dickies" but The Assembly Line have a pattern for what I think is a modern version - mock shirt? So they are around. I might make one.

https://theassemblylineshop.com/collections/modern-minimalist-sewing-patterns/products/mock-shirt-sewing-pattern?variant=37634260631719

Go for it! Although I prefer the Simplicity pattern I linked because it allows for elastics at the side to hold it in place, though simple enough to alter that TAL pattern to include similar.
Thanks to PP for linking the knit ones earlier, I shall be making one of those too to go under coats! Seems like a great alternative to scarves that get tangled up in bag straps etc.

I came across a puffa dickey in by browsing on Next Christmas last year. Can’t think of the product description but it took me a few seconds to figure out what it was.

I miss it being unacceptable for men to walk shirtless in public.

Apparently wheely bags are all the rage in parts of Spain where young people (especially students with lots of books) use them and I've seen quite a few round here.

What about simply dressing up a bit more when going out, rather than 'come as you are'. Making a special effort seems to have gone out of fashion.

You are right! I live in Spain and I have one haha
Totally agree as well RE scruffy dressing. I hate seeing people coming into work, or into church in jeans and trainers. I know I am old fashioned but sometimes it’s nice to distinguish between when you are doing something respectable and when you are just hanging out at home. (Jeans of course have their place elsewhere)

Precipice · 17/09/2023 14:54

It absolutely is a thing! Just depends on the socks and on the sandals. A good bridge between a little too cold in sandals and a bit too warm in trainers and socks. Good also for when it's hot in the day, but you're sitting somewhere late in the evening and your toes are getting chilly.

I’m 30 and I agree.
Men in scruffy tracksuits and women in leggings all the time. Just gives me the ick. Yep I know they can wear what they want but 🙄🙄🙄

Socks and crocs / sandals / Birkenstocks are fine atm. Probably the trend won’t last long.
