Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

Nice Hats for summer

Anything other than bloody joggers

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 17/09/2023 09:25

Apparently wheely bags are all the rage in parts of Spain where young people (especially students with lots of books) use them and I've seen quite a few round here.

What about simply dressing up a bit more when going out, rather than 'come as you are'. Making a special effort seems to have gone out of fashion.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/09/2023 09:37

I’m seriously tempted to get a wheelie trolley tbh.

pinnies - I’d really like a frilly half pinny. Might try to make one.

Proper bread - none of it tastes anything like bread used to

WhereAreWeNow · 17/09/2023 09:40

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie you can get amazing pinnies on ebay. Search vintage aprons. I've got a lovely half pinny.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/09/2023 09:50

Shopping trollies are definitely back without all the preconceptions.

It seemed to initially be people using big suitcases for shopping in Lidl pre-pandemic, but now, when we walk back from the market, we pass significant numbers of men pulling plain coloured versions and women with the 'teacher trolley', hard case ones.

There's a distinct absence of tartan or the fixed four wheel cages with a tartan liner, but it seems that the prejudice towards something deemed 'Old Lady' has gone. Except where people have cars and use those for shopping - but they don't need them, do they?

Ah that would be great, I hate seeing young teen girls trying to balance their books impractically on one shoulder in oversized handbags, they just never look comfortable or ready to learn, like they can only participate in education meeting a really impractical beauty standard, like they don't belong. I'm biased though as I still use a rucksack for work as a grown woman instead of a handbag!

Cary Grant-style acting.

Zara sold out of their Wheely bags a couple of seasons ago.

Fruitynutcase · 17/09/2023 10:10

Shops closing on a Sunday . Sunday was family day, a day of rest . We should have followed Germany and kept Sundays as a day of rest .

Maireas · 17/09/2023 10:10

Slips under clothing. Most dresses and skirts are clingy and see through. I always wear one, keeps the clothes opaque and they hang better.

LightDrizzle · 17/09/2023 10:17

I’ve had a wheelie bag since my thirties! I lived in a wonderful city area that has greengrocers, butchers etc. and I could do my whole Christmas shop a short walk from my house. I know live near a famous market.

I’d like to see mourning bands come back. They are before my time but apparently my dad was anachronistically wearing one when he met my mum in around 1960. Sounds morbid I know but I often think how helpful it would have been for strangers to know you were in a fragile state without you having to say anything and risk bursting into tears.

Maireas · 17/09/2023 10:19

Yes, mourning bands were good for that reason.

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 10:20

Tailored clothes instead of the shapeless baggy sacks in the shops. Which are pinned on the models anyway to look good.
Solid or geometric prints rather than everything coming up floral.
Normal sized sleeves and collars.

Gloriousgardener11 · 17/09/2023 10:20

Table manners and good manners in general.
Consideration for others.

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 10:22

Isn't this S and B? I thought op meant clothes.

Blarn · 17/09/2023 10:22

Headscarves. Even my grandma stopped wearing them in her later years as she must have thought they looked dated! But she had a lovely selection of silk ones and wind or drizzle never bothered her hair! And they looked lovely.

clowniform · 17/09/2023 10:25

Dickeys! I have just made one from a 1940s pattern and it will be incredibly useful under jumpers.

What's bra slip?

A bra slip was a full length slip which was attached to the band of your bra.

Boujibroke · 17/09/2023 10:29

@Maireas I didn't know you could buy slips. Do you have any recommendations please.

@Blarn agree with you on headscarves. I have been looking foe some but can't find any. I think they would definitely help to keep my hair protected from the Autumn wind/rain.

My contribution is gloves. I would like to see them come back not just for winter. They look elegant and protect hands.

I've just watched Mr Selfridge and loved all the glamorous costumes.

whatausername · 17/09/2023 10:31

Hats! Oh, I wish hats would come back.

Slips, aprons and pinafores are so practical.

Gloves. Now they are only worn for sports and in winter. Funny how they didn't become more popular during the pandemic. Could simply have laundered them with masks and the rest of the washing rather than constantly sanitising hands.

piscofrisco · 17/09/2023 10:32

I've had a wheelie trolley for 10 years. It's handy for shopping and great for carrying stuff at festivals. I'm 40.
