An opportunity to discuss styling all those clothes we have on temporary loan.

That person sounds really inspiring @clowniform, gorgeous. And I'm envious of the knitting, those are proper heirloom items!

ScottishMouse · 10/08/2023 08:06

Interested in why you’re trying no to wear tights @Snowyowl78. I could not hate an item of clothing more than I do tights, haven’t worn them in years. That’s part of the reason I never wear dresses in winter, but I am going to try harder this year.
I really like the Turrell dress but fear it might become a bit of a one season (which probably means one week) wonder for me.

Snowyowl78 · 10/08/2023 08:09

@ScottishMouse i feel like it negates the freeness and restrictions around the stomach area that is the beauty of wearing a dress. Also I think it isn’t very cool which maybe is a bit silly. Also, for intimate health! i haven’t quite figured out the alternative though.
I wore mine on Xmas day!

ScottishMouse · 10/08/2023 08:42

All very good reasons that I am on board with @Snowyowl78. I know lots of folk wear leggings instead, but I’ve never got that to work great for me either. Last winter I just went bare legged a few times, making sure I had enough layers on my top half and cosy socks and boots and it was ok but I’m sure it looked odd in the depths of winter in Scotland!

Laska2Meryls · 10/08/2023 08:47

I am out all day today and Top Toast again..
'The' Trousers, mid blue swingy blouse , an Emily Nixon silver necklace bought a few years ago and the Steve Mono fisherman shoes, that I bought at Kilver Court...
I feel extremely brave wearing the cream trousers for a day out tbh .. I am so prone to spilling stuff!

Laska2Meryls · 10/08/2023 08:50

I really hate tights.. it always seems that they crutch droop on me and I end up with webbed thighs !
Id only wear opaques anyway for winter so its leggings every time for me.. Summer I just go bare-legged despite mine being pale enough to reflect sunlight

I just wear super thick tights that are almost legging type. I feel your pain about tights. Hate them and especially the thinner ones. I always buy them super large as they bug me and shrink and are often then short in the leg. I've heard good things about snag tights? Never tried them.

neveradullmoment99 · 10/08/2023 08:55

I'm.in no Toast whatsoever today! I'm off into my class to set it up for Wednesday ( schools go back here)
In jeans and an old allsaints tee and trainers!

neveradullmoment99 · 10/08/2023 08:56

Where the heck is the sun? Certainly not here in Scotland!

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 10/08/2023 08:56

I wear snag tights but only ever footless as I can’t bear my toes being constrained by tights. I wear socks and boots with them in the winter. In the summer bare legs (and socks if it’s wet and horrible like this summer).

It's a horrible summer.

Snowyowl78 · 10/08/2023 09:08

I have Heist tights which are the best I’ve found, the waistband is massive so more comfortable. I am still trying to phase them out though. Maybe I need some long boots for winter.

has anyone shopped at ‘Beyond Nine’? I have had a few pairs of trousers delivered, the linen trousers are lovely! Really comfortable and have an exaggerated shape which is very cool. I also bought some other cupro trousers which I am debating on currently…..

awaiting my poplin tank this morning from the postie!

Noeggsontoast · 10/08/2023 09:16

I agree re tights sometimes spoiling the waist of a dress especially light fabrics. In winter I sometimes wear opaque tights, but opaque hold ups are my answer or sometimes if the dress is the right length I wear some lovely knee length socks.

The best tights with the best flattest non roll waistband ever are Bonds from Australia. I still have a couple of pairs and wish I could get more. The comfiest softest best fitting ever. I miss Bonds and their underwear too!

Alpacasoft · 10/08/2023 09:26

I love tights 😅
However Im fussy and my go to are Falke Merino, JL Italian wool blend or thick cotton ones.
Snag and nylon type ones I can't bear the feel of and prefer breathable natural fibres.
I feel like they strangle my thighs !
Bare legs in summer, they are winter clothing for me.
I also wear silk/ wool vests and thermals or cotton camis in the summer.
Interesting that others feel tights spoil the look, I feel much more streamlined with vest/ cami and tights with no gaps and my clothes always have ease.
Not remotely cool nor do I care
I'm not a fan of central heating and my office is like the arctic so tights a must here !

ScottishMouse · 10/08/2023 09:26

No sun here in Edinburgh either but it is so muggy. I’m in my eBay gingham culottes again with a very old and much loved white shirt by Orslow (lovely unisex Japanese brand) and some trainers. I brought the slate poplin pj shirt with me as a light jacket but I am already melting.

ilovecherries · 10/08/2023 09:53

It’s very muggy in Glasgow too. Like alpacasoft I’m partial to a nice tight and wear the same brands she does. A bit spendy but I look after them and don’t treat them as disposable items like lots of people seem to do with tights. And really - who am I to complain about any item of clothing being spendy 😂. We are off up (proper) north to see my mum in the caravan. I’m wearing the jute Gabis and a cotton/linen knitted sleeveless jumper. More substantial than a tank but quite airy.

I like tights too / but agree, never nylon, always cotton or merino. M&S do some fine cotton ones that are good for the start of autumn, and I also prefer those when I’m wearing them with ankle boots. When I’m in knee boots or wfh, thick cotton or wool all the way. And yes, if you look after them they last several seasons IME,

clowniform · 10/08/2023 10:24

Yet another reason to love this thread: detailed tights chat. I will throw in a controversial cheer for sheers (Wolford Nude 8) very useful for un-summer, more formal work days and close-toed shoes.

@ScottishMouse thank you for introducing me to Orslow. Love that Japanese Ametora aesthetic.

Alpacasoft · 10/08/2023 10:45

I agree @ilovecherries
I buy one or two pairs a year and wash on my machines wool wash.
They are still going strong after several years.
To stop them wearing at the heel or if it's chilly I also wear them inside boots with the free bamboo socks I get sent every year!
They don't have a ribbed cuff and are just the right size and thickness.
If wearing Blundstones I will go for fairisle.

I've come to view the wool tights as more like a merino baselayer, I have those as well.
So comfortable and not strangly around the waist or thighs at all.

Sooverthemill · 10/08/2023 10:53

@Alpacasoft oh you will enjoy those! I am about to start a roosamine shawl as a test knit for Florence spurling ( who designed that sweater).

Sooverthemill · 10/08/2023 10:56

Edinburgh people: I am coming up to the festival for the last weekend. This is a big deal as I rarely go away ( or out) as I have to find alternative care for DD who is bed bound. But DH has a show on and I want to show my support ( it’s Bed at gilded balloon). What will the weather be like?!?!

I hope so!
Any tips welcome

Brillenbar47 · 10/08/2023 12:34

There are some lovely hereu sandals and shoes half price in matches sale x

Snowyowl78 · 10/08/2023 12:35

I got the slate poplin tank today in a Medium and the medium is also tight under the armpits! Strange. It felt no bigger in that area but too big everywhere else! I think I’ll give up on it

Dee1224 · 10/08/2023 12:39

Hi all, I am debating whether it’s worth going to one of the Toast exchange events today as I have a couple of things I am never going to wear. My sister says that every she’s gone, there has been mostly stuff that looks like it’s been rejected by the local charity shop.

What are your thoughts? Is it worth dragging my OH away from the decorating to drive me, (can’t do it myself 😿)?
