So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

I hate floral dresses. I've worn some sort of boilersuit 5/7 days for the last month. Suicoke sandals if hot or Nike flyknits if not.

TBH no-one is wearing dresses and white trainers this spring because it has been too cold, wet and miserable. I'm still in winter jumpers (except for yesterday when we managed to get over 20 degrees for the first time this year).

I can't wait to get my summer trousers out but it's still jeans and jumper weather. So so miserable, if it doesn't warm up soon the cats will be growing their winter coat again.

Like some of the other posters I’ve been wearing midi floral dresses with white trainers since the 90s. Granted the trainers were more plimsoll type shoes then rather than the white leather trainers you see everywhere now. But the overall look was much the same. It was practical and pretty and didn’t look dated though never high fashion either.
Gutted to think a look I’ve worn every spring/summer for 30 years might suddenly start to look really frumpy and I wonder if I’ll notice when that happens (it still looks ok to me now, so maybe I won’t 😂).

With skinny jeans, I still see a lot of people wearing them - they really suit some people and I think they still look good on those people. It’s the others (like me) who are a bit pear-shaped who never really suited skinny jeans but wore them anyway who look a bit dated wearing them now I think.
I think (hope) that if a certain item of clothing really suits your body, style and personality that it will continue to look good even if it’s not in fashion…hopefully…

I’ve had a tiny bit of a yen for pink trainers with a pink dress.

I might indulge it if we ever have any sunny weekend days so I can do Vinted photos and sell something first.

I've bought an emerald green pleated cotton midi dress from H&M. Strappy heart-shaped top, full skirt, fitted midriff. Oh so flattering. Comes in green or black. It's now sold out in all but the tiniest 2 sizes. A steal at £49.99. ❤️ Plan to wear it with trainers, sliders, heels and ballet flats, actually, almost any footwear.

My summer favourite along with H&M white parachute pants.

So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

@LoisLane66 that green dress is gorgeous! It wouldn't suit my figure (middle-aged spread/tyre), I'd love to wear it though! Such a striking colour, be great with all kinds of footwear too, as you suggest.

@Highdaysandholidays1
Hi 👋🏻
I am 5-5 size 16 and 78 years old. I can tell you that I took a photo of me wearing the dress with a pair of black cross front chunky sliders and another photo wearing same dress with 2 year old white @trainers from Zara and a fluffy white cardi with sparkly buttons from H&M last year.
I edited my head off in the photos and stood against a blank white wall in bedroom. Nothing to identify myself hands behind back.
Sent to each of my 5 children 3 women and 2 men aged 36 to 54 and asked if it would suit me if I bought it. They all said (in their own way) NO, as I am too old to wear clothes that colour and style and the photo wasn't representative of my age group.
I wore good underwear and strapless bra but the style keeps you in.
I sent them the original photo showing it was me and they wouldn't believe it wasn't photo shopped. I've no idea how to do that anyway and it certainly wasn't touched up at all. Of course the kids live more than 100 miles away and we only see each other about 3 X a year max so they aren't that familiar with what I look like from day to day.
It can be worn with a thin tee shirt or top underneath. I tried it with a white tee and it looked great.
Don't be afraid to try. You can always return if it really doesn't suit. Thanks for the nice reply. 💐

That's such a great message and turns my preconceptions on their head!

Pigtailsandall · 08/05/2023 18:13

@IhearyouClemFandango I'm the same, I can't stand ditsy florals or tiers, so I kind of ruled out new dresses for this summer. It'll save me money and I'm more of a shorts/culottes/etc person anyway. However I do really like that poplin dress you linked!

I brought out my linen trousers this weekend and wore them with cropped t-shirts and birkenstocks. No going back to jumpers now, even if I do lose a toe to hypothermia

Sticking with the floral dresses.
I fear change.

In my defence, I was wearing it before it became trendy so feel it’s okay to wear it after the trend fucks off.

And converse are practical for work.

Same, I've been wearing floral dresses since being 18 yrs old in 1988 (although I teamed it with DMs back then).

I'll stick with it as I like it and like to think it suits me.
