So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

I'm in complete denial that I'm not 22 anymore but I love this look. Might order the skirt - I can do a pleather skirt this shape with tights and good heeled boots in the winter so why not this? With a hefty application of faux tannage

While I love the whole long denim skirt look,
I just look at it and immediately feel hot, uncomfortable and trapped and cannot imagine being comfortable in heavy denim on a hot summers day.

Maybe not the hottest of days but a denim skirt would be much cooler than jeans. So wear during those in between days which tbh is most of our summer

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/04/2023 08:48

Sorry @WesterChick but I think that’s awful even for a tiny 22 year old. It looks like a slightly dirty bandage.

Emeraldsrock · 12/04/2023 09:14

Palazzo pants, plain crew neck top.
Loafers instead of trainers ( still like trainers as well)
The walking boots with the fluffy collars that everyone is wearing when it’s cooler/ muddier, such as the sorrel or Joseph seibel ones.
I have never worn midi dresses anyway ( to short and muscular of calf) but do the look with above the knee dresses and less florals and think it’s slightly less frumpy and still doable ( wear cycle shorts under to protect from gusts of wind).
wearing a lot of cropped Jeans and khaki type pants. Again with plain t-shirts and biker/bomber/varsity jacket.

I've just ordered this skirt https://www.sosandar.com/mid-blue-denim-buckle-detail-midi-skirt and Adidas Gazelles chunky version. Not necessarily to wear together although think they might work. The skirt looks like it could be dressed up or down. I think it will give a more flattering shape than the long a-line denim skirts which seem popular but still give a nod to the trend. Hopefully chunkier sole on trainers will give a little lift and lengthen my legs a bit.

Pencil skirts are very much on trend as are coloured trainers. Your combination will look great!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/04/2023 10:29

Sorry @Emeraldsrock but dismissing midi dresses as 'frumpy' whilst recommending Joseph Seibel made me laugh. Your outfits sound nice though.

@FancyFanny I wear an old M&S one like that on not too hot summer days. I do struggle to find the right top and shoe combo for it, though. Those trainers look great.

Emeraldsrock · 12/04/2023 10:54

I don’t know much about Joseph seibel just found a nice pair the other day so it was in my head as an example of the type of boot I meant.
They look frumpy as heck on me as I am 5 foot 3”
Am sure they look fabulous on a 5”foot 10” gamine type. But I was referring to myself. Didn’t mean to offend!

Grin I wasn't offended at all, since I haven't got any. It's just that I view those as the epitome of 'comfortable shoes' so was amused that you'd recommend them whilst dismissing midi dresses as 'frumpy'. Grin Sorry - was just being silly.

RampantIvy · 12/04/2023 11:05

Ooh, I like that Uniqli dress @JaneFondue.

RampantIvy · 12/04/2023 11:05

Uniqlo

It really does look as if it's made of bandage material.

Riverlee · 12/04/2023 13:45

@JaneFondue love that dress.

I really like the style of that skirt and agree with PP the Gazelles would go great.

Sorry but dismissing midi dresses as 'frumpy' whilst recommending Joseph Seibel made me laugh.

I might think this when reading something or following a link, but I would never post it. It's a bit mean. And in any case, people like what they like. (Obviously my taste is immaculate ...)

@JaneFondue , that Uniqlo dress might work for me. Thanks for the link

Well, it wasn't intended as mean - it just tickled me a bit.

And I'm currently sitting in ripped jeans, sheepskin slippers and a dressing gown.

these are the kind of boots that I mean. Think they can work on cooler spring days too

They look like every other pair of white trainers to me.

One of the models is wearing skinny jeans.

Pigtailsandall · 12/04/2023 21:34

I stopped reading this thread few days back because it annoyed me so much, but since then I've reflected on a few outfits I'd like to trial. Like others, I'm liking the silky bias-cut skirt, and I also found a navy blue pleated shiny skirt I bought years ago. Quite drawn to the "very casual top, fancy skirt" look. Think I'll do:

Grey band tee and pleated long navy skirt with white hi-tops
Oversized knit top over a bias cut silky skirt (can't actually afford silk) with low trainers. Thinking something tonal but with a bright shoe.
Polo dress in khaki, with stripy socks showing and white hi-tops
Boxy white tee, slightly too-long linen trousers and chunky sandals

Looking forward to having a little play with spring clothes!

No. They look nothing like your average pair of white trainers!

WesterChick · 12/04/2023 21:39

Lol at dirty bandage, can't unsee that now Grin
