So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

I love this, and I have good legs, but am quite apple-y. Not sure if it will look good with a tee.

I am apple-y too. It is slimming skirt and skims the tummy area. Has a flattering split. There are so many different styles of tee with various necklines, length. Darker tee would be slimming.

You say lovely I say an old sack.

😐I like very simple shapes and solid colours. I do not like floral patterns, puffy sleeves, frills, yokes, tiers, and excessive fabric, though all of these look good on other people. Presumably so does the pp.

I like simple shapes and plain colours. I don’t like sacks though.

I feel for you op, S&B will soon become unusable at this rate. Hope you've found some it helpful.

I think the same @Floisme. S & B has a large contingent desperate to jump on threads and state how much they don’t care about trends etc. I only ever post for very specific questions now, but that’s quite boring and functional.

I actually don’t think MN is the right place to post about clothes at all, unfortunately.

RampantIvy · 11/04/2023 17:04

I have noticed that these threads get a little too lively these days, and I think Style and Beauty should have a subsection just for fashion.

I dress for me with a nod to current trends, but am far too old to worry about wearing the latest fashion in trainers, for example. I still enjoy Style and Beauty, but there are posters on both sides who like to sneer. Those who don't care about trends and those who care so much that they call anyone who isn't trendy frumpy. It cuts both ways.

Mirabai · 11/04/2023 17:06

Style and Beauty is a bit of a misnomer anyway it’s mainly posters talking about Boden and Clark’s.

KrabiBeach · 11/04/2023 17:06

Look, all I was hoping for was some inspiration about alternative outfits to wear - not a lecture on the merits or otherwise of not following trends, or the history of plimsoles.

I think Boden has fallen out of favour with mumsnetters @Mirabai.
It's never been on my radar.

LolaSmiles · 11/04/2023 17:11

I appreciate the summary posts you've done KrabiBeach.

It's given me some motivation to start planning my next capsule rotation and shopping my closet ready for summer.

I think my lightweight modal joggers are going to be a staple this summer, but I'm undecided on a jacket to go with it

An oversized faded black denim jacket might make a nice replacement from the mid wash fitted denim jacket from recent years.

Shoes stay the same year round so white sand shoes, pale coloured converse, and a pair of chunky black trainers are the non-sandal shoes for me this year.

😆

My summer alternative to floral is a crisp linen shift ( www.linenme have a wide range and I also like Rodier). Or a tea dress with a non-floral pattern (eg DvF, Kooples)

Surely Style is individual. One person's sack is another person's versatile skirt.

What I do notice is that anything affordable from the high street is by definition unworthy of style and beauty, apparently. Maybe we should have a separate section simply called " What I cover my naked body with so I dont frighten small children!". Or just " Clothes.'

Cantonet · 11/04/2023 18:54

I love the free people skirt & the parachute skirt pictured.
I will be wearing cropped wide linen pants or cropped wide jeans with a linen t shirt/ shirt. Or a denim/ denim look lyocell shirt with a satin slip skirt or patterned midi. I've never worn a floral midi as they just don't look right. Likewise trainers in summer, as my feet get too hot. As I'm only 5ft 3 wedge flip flops have been my foot wear of choice for years.
Summer style is not synonymous with high expenditure & high expenditure is not morally superior to low expenditure. Contrary to what seems to be the prevailing opinion on S&B at the moment.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/04/2023 19:25

I really like that Cos skirt.

WesterChick · 11/04/2023 19:26

I clicked on a Cos ad link on Fb hence the weird link I think. They also have The Most Beautiful dress atm in a toile print.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 11/04/2023 20:17

I love the Cos skirt and the halter-neck dress but my goodness they're long! They're almost ankle length on the model, who's probably getting on for 6 foot. At 5 foot 2, I would be drowned. There are so many clothes around at the moment that I just have to rule out immediately - it feels my options are very limited, particularly when you take into account the oversized trend (yes, I'm looking at you, striped shirts).

Having said that, there are some good ideas on this thread that I should be able to do. Am currently looking for some decent cargo trousers that aren't too voluminous and overpocketed.

I was promoting this Boohoo dress on just about every wedding guest thread. It reminds me of the dress Elizabeth Murdoch wore to her father's last wedding (I wonder if she'll recycle it?)

So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Sarah Murdoch.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 11/04/2023 21:30

While I love the whole long denim skirt look,
I just look at it and immediately feel hot, uncomfortable and trapped and cannot imagine being comfortable in heavy denim on a hot summers day.
