So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

I keep seeing that Adidas Sambas are The Shoe of the season and they've sold out everywhere, so like a dick I want them. They will be ubiquitous.

The slightly platform adidas ones posted above are lovely.

Every Spring I admire trainers for about 2 months before remembering I go straight from boots to sandals.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/04/2023 22:16

Has anybody tried platform Converse?

WesterChick · 12/04/2023 22:33

These sandals are hawt

DD has had some for a couple of years @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. She says they are incredibly comfortable.

EllaPaella · 12/04/2023 23:16

I have platform Converse - comfy and versatile.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/04/2023 08:05

Thanks both. I’ll try to try some on next time I’m in town.

The Sosander denim skirt arrived- it's too big! The waist is huge for a 12- said a 12 was a 29inch waist and mine is a little larger than that but it was still big. Re-ordered in a 10.

Adidas Gazelles Bold arrived too- bought in sale from Office. They fit well although have a pronounced arch support which might take some getting used to.

What are the sidings like on the gazelles - I was thinking of ordering 1/2 size up from normal shoe size. Are the bold gazelles the ones with the gold / yellow stripes or white stripes?

FancyFanny · 13/04/2023 08:21

Chatting with a friend today and we decided 70s boho is going to be popular so those long floral skirts and dresses could be styled a bit differently to adapt to that look as well. Maybe wearing with some slouchy tan suede boots or tan wedge sandals and 70s style accessories- big beaded earrings, a fringed bag, a bog belt etc.

The Bold refers to the chunky sole rather than colour- they come in lots of colours I think, I went for the burgundy and white. The sizing seems pretty standard adidas- I always get a UK size 7 and am normally a size 40/7 in most shoes.

Wallingtonhall · 13/04/2023 08:57

Midi dresses are comfortable and actually are everywhere in the shops so pretty sure they aren’t going away. I’m going to continue to wear mine.

I do like those long denim skirts but the ones with the fly sit badly unless you have a flat stomach. I definitely don’t need extra bulk in that region!

I had the cowboy boots out with them last autumn for evening and enjoyed the throwback. Nobody pointed and laughed, anyway. Grin

Daisy Jones is making me want to get them out again. Smile

I agree. This is something I have never been able to understand on mumsnet when I see phrases like "skinny jeans are so last year" when the shops are still full of them and I still see plenty of people wearing them.

Who are these achingly trendy people making these pronouncements when it clearly isn't happening?

Mirabai · 13/04/2023 09:32

Shops still sell skinnies but fashion itself has moved on.

RampantIvy · 13/04/2023 09:39

I know people wear a much wider style of jeans now, but I don't think skinny jeans are as passe as the fashionistas say they are.

They don't look after to me as so many people still wear them.

Niftythrifter · 13/04/2023 09:42

I was in M and S yesterday and they had the mannequins dresses in silky looking co-ods that looked like a pair of Pjs.

RampantIvy · 13/04/2023 09:44

Yes, I agree that some of the clothes did look like pyjamas.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/04/2023 09:53

Zara have versions of those silky PJ things too. DD wears them with a tight vest and the shirt open, but she is long, skinny and gorgeous! 😂

Niftythrifter · 13/04/2023 15:06

They look like something the very stylish mum of Samantha wears on Bewitched!

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 13/04/2023 15:59

Have never found a trouser suit that suited me, ditto leather jackets, particularly biker jackets, so have never worn any of these. Denim jackets have always been a staple, but it's about finding more current shapes rather than the more generic style. So, this summer, will be wearing this, a chore jacket, and a hand block denim kimono jacket. That said, I have recently bought this.

I will be wearing these with either cropped wide legged high waisted trousers or shorts, both worn a more fitted tank top or an oversized tucked-in shirt, midi skirts (cotton poplin) or a variety of dresses be they one colour, floral or polka dots. The aforementioned floral dress is a bias cut silk one from Raey.

Accessories tend to be more trend, and this is what I am currently musing on. I do have a wonderful pair of neon Tevas and would like a similarly coloured pair of trainers. I also want a pair of Hereu padded fisherman sandals although have yet to decide a colour...

Cropped Utility Jacket

Made from an organic cotton-blend with stretch, this utility-style, cropped denim jacket has a relaxed fit and features detailed stitching, press folds on the sleeves and oversized patch pockets. + 55% Organic cotton, 42% TencelTM lyocell, 3% Elastane

I wear long black maxi dresses with sheer patterned top and and sheer leggings underneath. Last year I got a bright green denim jacket that I love! I have thick black leather sandals. I feel it's a "me" look and I feel so comfortable in it and look nice and don't stand out. Or I hope so anyway 😅
I have a few floral dresses but I reckon mine are minis
I love a big oversized Tshirt with cycle shorts for when it's really hot
I have one of those oversized striped shirts that pp mentioned but I never know how to wear it properly. I have a big apron belly so try and avoid any tucking in

LolaSmiles · 13/04/2023 17:38

If you looked around my local town centre you'd see a lot of people wearing thin jeggings, leggings as trousers, whole outfits of clingy jersey fabrics, denim jackets and biker jackets everywhere.

I'm sure in a month thin white linen trousers will be back again, and spaghetti strap tops.

None of it is fashionable or stylish, and honestly some of it looks terrible, but it sells and people are happy. I'd not judge what's stylish or on trend based on what's selling.

I really like my skinnies and have them in a couple of different washes. They're styled differently now to 10 years ago, but wouldn't say they're an on trend/in style cut of jeans.

Pigtailsandall · 13/04/2023 17:40

My mum is nordic and there's a saying she's fond of: the fool isn't the person who sells, the fool is the person who buys. So of course shops still have skinny jeans or floral midis, even if fashion has moved on because there's clearly still a market for them. Shops want to primarily sell you things, whilst simultaneously offering you something new to covet.

So floral midi is dead; long live the floral midi.

I bought a Ghost grey satin slip skirt yesterday. V excited for it to arrive!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/04/2023 17:46

I have an Arket black satin slip that I wore last summer with trainers or flat leopard print slingbacks, but I really struggled with what tops to wear with it. I can't wear stuff tucked in and most tops are too long for wearing out. It's fine with jumpers for A/W but I struggle in the summer.

ArianahX · 13/04/2023 18:32

Prompted by this thread I've just ordered a 'midaxi' (probably floor length on me) khaki combat skirt with back slit from New Look.

I may wear it with the black New Balance trainers I also ordered from Office.

I'm also happy as didn't have to pay full price due to both places having Blue Light card discount.
