So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

Same principle of dresses with trainers
but different prints - I.e. bi colour abstract leaf or floral prints - bright blue and white is a trend and black and cream .

Try with coloured trainers
same comfortable relaxed look updated

I have an Arket black satin slip that I wore last summer with trainers or flat leopard print slingbacks, but I really struggled with what tops to wear with it. I can't wear stuff tucked in and most tops are too long for wearing out. It's fine with jumpers for A/W but I struggle in the summer.

I’m on the same mission for tops. AllSaints have a nice, slightly sheer, v neck black top that works with my slip skirts but it’s the only one I’ve found.

I’m wearing tight pencil midi skirts (denim or monochrome with buttons/front split) or midi jersey bodycon dresses and trainers.

@Tiddler39 I love that look, it's not for me and my middle-aged mum tum, but I still adore it!

Went to a second-hand place today and picked up a khaki slacket in half linen/ half cotton with a tie waist for a pound. Rolled up the sleeves.

I'm just bargain-hunting my way into spring/summer!

My mum is nordic and there's a saying she's fond of: the fool isn't the person who sells, the fool is the person who buys. So of course shops still have skinny jeans or floral midis, even if fashion has moved on because there's clearly still a market for them. Shops want to primarily sell you things, whilst simultaneously offering you something new to covet.

So floral midi is dead; long live the floral midi.

I bought a Ghost grey satin slip skirt yesterday. V excited for it to arrive!

Do you find ghost firs large or small?

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I wear my slip skirts with a fluid v neck linen t shirt. Or with a lyocell Cos t shirt . A front partial tuck works or the hairband hack to the side or front. I also really like the denim shirt with slip skirt look, so I've bought a couple of shorter shirts in a denim look lyocell. Plus a chambray linen shirt to team with the skirts.

Lightweight combats with shirts/tees OR lightweight pocketed midi dresses with white trainers or white 2750 cotu, OR wide leg grey linen trousers with white white tee or white or cobalt blue bandeau top. I have three linen mix jackets in navy, cream and a greyish/green and two pairs of M&S wide leg side stripe trousers WITHOUT the ankle side zips. One navy with red/white stripe, one khaki green/grey with cream and grey stripe from last year. Lots of 3/4 sleeve striped tees.

Thanks to the beyond nine mable pant recommendation… they’ve made their way to New Zealand and I LOVE them

didn’t go strong colour, went natural, wearing white birks, white t and denim overshirt

they are gorgeous. Not old lady linen elasticated pants at all :)

I assume the hairband hack is when you use a bobble to ‘knit’ the top? I do that a lot but it only works for me with a shirt or jacket open over it.

Half tucks look dreadful on me.

An open denim shirt over a vest could work, so I’ll try that. I hardly ever wear my denim shirt.

Fuck me, I'm glad I'm pregnant and will be huge this summer, yet invisible. Otherwise I'd probably have to spend a fortune to update my wardrobe. I guess lots of floral dresses will be on vinted now.

Surprisingly few I've found.

There are loads for sale at most retailers though because they know most women won't be dictated to by "Big Fashion" and will wear what works. Not what they're told to.

True. Floral midi dresses are everywhere. I like them. I'm just waiting for it to be warm enough to wear them. I am fed up of wearing winter clothes. Where I live we have barely reached double figures temperature-wise this year.

TBH no-one is wearing dresses and white trainers this spring because it has been too cold, wet and miserable. I'm still in winter jumpers (except for yesterday when we managed to get over 20 degrees for the first time this year).

Our reservoirs are completely full after being nearly emptied last summer. On the bright side I'm feeling smug because I cut the grass yesterday.
