So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

Sadly, satin slip skirts are a no for me. I am midi/maxi dress shaped.

Have never found a trouser suit that suited me, ditto leather jackets, particularly biker jackets, so have never worn any of these. Denim jackets have always been a staple, but it's about finding more current shapes rather than the more generic style. So, this summer, will be wearing this, a chore jacket, and a hand block denim kimono jacket. That said, I have recently bought this.

I will be wearing these with either cropped wide legged high waisted trousers or shorts, both worn a more fitted tank top or an oversized tucked-in shirt, midi skirts (cotton poplin) or a variety of dresses be they one colour, floral or polka dots. The aforementioned floral dress is a bias cut silk one from Raey.

Accessories tend to be more trend, and this is what I am currently musing on. I do have a wonderful pair of neon Tevas and would like a similarly coloured pair of trainers. I also want a pair of Hereu padded fisherman sandals although have yet to decide a colour...

The Baum and Pferdgarten jacket is gorgeous

I have this oneBaum and Pferdgarten

To a PP who mentioned Lycra….young women everywhere are wearing spray on leggings as everyday wear. Once again. Not loving this look and it’s definitely not for middle aged me.

@bunnybunnybunnybunny Lovely jacket.

@bunnybunnybunnybunny Lovely jacket.

The Cos one

Mirabai · 13/04/2023 22:30

It’s sort of nice and sort of looks like a bed jacket.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 14/04/2023 09:05

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie The COS jacket is a few years old now, but they did it again this year, and am sure they will do it again.

@NatashaDancing Funnily enough, I did consider your jacket, the skirt too, but so much of my wardrobe is navy that I couldn't justify buying more of the same, well, this year at least!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/04/2023 09:50

In the spirit of this thread, I’m wearing a denim midi skirt today - unfortunately it’s with tights, boots and a biker jacket plus big scarf because the weather is so horrible.

I think this will be my spring/summer outfit.

wide palazzo trousers (primark had some lovely ones yesterday) and fitted tops with trainers/Birkenstocks

This is a great look, although those aren't palazzo pants.

The Frankie Shop is great for the kind of trousers in the picture.

This is because of John Lewis declaring the floral midi is dead I think. I think it’s good if people stick to what they like such as the floral midi as it will send a clear signal that it’s the consumer who gets to decide what’s in and not a shop. It’s normally the job of a shop to respond to the needs and wants of a customer not the other way round. I say rebel against the so called demise of the floral midi!

You think John Lewis sets fashion trends …. ?

Your one is lovely. I bought mine in a real shop, they didn't have yours.

I did think about getting the matching skirt but it might be too much. And the jacket was specifically bought to wear over a dress which needed a blue jacket , no longer than waist length, and which was simultaneously fitted but could also accommodate voluminous sleeves on the dress. It ticked all the boxes.

Ooh. I love that outfit. The colours don't suit me, but the style would. Unfortunately it is 7 degrees here and raining today. Seven degrees in the middle of April!

So I am in jeans, long sleeved T-shirt and warm cardigan and not looking very stylish at all.

JaneFondue · 14/04/2023 19:01

That Cos jacket is great. I have ordered a navy jumpsuit from Oliver Bonas today. I have never been a jumpsuit person, but trying it out. The toilet situation may not be pretty though.

That's my look today too, although swap the cardigan for a slightly baggy jumper which makes my boobs look huge as its a crew neck, but it was so bloody cold this morning being stylish wasn't an option.

I keep scrolling back to look at this Cos jacket that keeps being mentioned, and I can't find it. Please can someone link to it again?

Niftythrifter · 14/04/2023 20:35

@youllfindanotherlifetolive of course not!

Is that you? You look amazing .

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 14/04/2023 23:01

I have an Arket black satin slip that I wore last summer with trainers or flat leopard print slingbacks, but I really struggled with what tops to wear with it. I can't wear stuff tucked in and most tops are too long for wearing out. It's fine with jumpers for A/W but I struggle in the summer.

I feel your pain, @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, but I wear my satin slip skirt with semi-fitted t-shirts, untucked. They tend to come 2-3 inches below my waist, which is enough to be comfortable, but not enough to swamp me.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/04/2023 12:38

Thanks. I’m struggling to find any shortish T-shirts. Tried a nice one in Cos but only in black and it would be nice to have a different colour.

RampantIvy · 15/04/2023 14:12

@JaneFondue, @Riverlee and @notwavingbutdrowning1 the Uniqlo dress arrived today and fits beautifully. I'm a 12 top and 14 bottom half and bought the medium. The skirt is quite voluminous so if you are between sizes I would size down. The colour in the photo is pretty accurate as well.

I'm 5'7" and the length looks the same on me as it does on the model.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 15/04/2023 15:13

Sharing a link for something isn't necessarily indicative of it being an online purchase. On the whole, I prefer looking and trying things in person. I had seen all three items when I was in Copenhagen, and the jacket was bought on a recent trip to Amsterdam.

Also, I wasn't suggesting I was planning on buying the jacket and skirt to wear together, far from it. Both items could have been useful as standalone pieces worn independently. Ultimately, I didn't buy either because their main fabric is polyester.

To those whom are admiring my COS utility jacket, am 5ft 4, so on me, it's waist length rather than cropped. It's a great all rounder, and shall hope they do it in an off-white colour denim next summer.

JaneFondue · 15/04/2023 16:02

Thanks @RampantIvy I am the same height as you and a size 12 too. I had a couple of Tshirt dresses from Uniqlo last year that washed really well and still look new.
