Fake nails, fake hair, fake everything really… where does that originate and why does anything think they look good in it?
Yes I know, we are all free to do what we like, of course. But honestly, I find it so bizarre and truly ugly, nobody ever looks good with it, it’s so bad.
How does one become convinced that’s the way to go to look good!?

it’s an awful look. i know a few girls who look like this and it’s hard because without it they are actually nice looking.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 24/03/2023 17:34

We all had our moments- poodle perms, blue eyeshadow, black lipstick etc.
it’s a very ‘insta’ look cos your features show up well in photos.

AbsolutePixels · 24/03/2023 17:41

I think the popularity of drag has something to do with. Clearly smartphones cameras/social media plays a part: this styling often looks a lot better in photos than real life. Luckily it's going out of fashion now.

5128gap · 24/03/2023 18:56

It originated with women wanting to look tanned with nice nails, long eyelashes and long full hair, not having those features naturally and, when false versions of these things became available and affordable to ordinary women, purchasing them. Just like once upon a time no one dyed their hair, and then they did.
Like everything, some women execute the look more subtly than others, which is largely dependent on personal taste and budget.

VioletCharlotte · 24/03/2023 19:07

It's just fashion. As pp said, in the 80's we had peroxide blonde spiral perms and blue mascara. I'm sure plenty of us looked a state too.

HelloBunny · 24/03/2023 19:12

Saw a young woman yesterday where she had badly damaged bleached hair all chopped into, with long straggly Barbie hair attached with pads at the back. That you could clearly see. I wouldn’t have left the house like that at her age... I dunno!

GoodVibesHere · 24/03/2023 19:19

I hate that I judge in this way but it's such a strange look to my eyes. So fake and almost grotesque! It seems to be people who want to appear outwardly confident, yet they often are insecure. Alongside leggings leaving nothing to the imagination, i.e. with a short top so no arse coverage and knicker lines on full display. Letting it all hang out so to speak.

YellowMay · 24/03/2023 19:23

The eyelashes are bad. I see young women with those thick, cheap strip lashes that are so heavy they can hardly open their eyes. I don’t know why they think this looks good.

But…in the 90s I wore streaky ‘wash off’ fake tan, put Sun-in in my hair and wore press on false nails. So…

Daffodilwoman · 24/03/2023 19:24

I think people will look back in horror at how some people look. It does look very Drag Queen when done to excess.

TheChosenTwo · 24/03/2023 19:25

Well in the 90’s I was a big fan of very thin eyebrows and Heather shimmer lipstick, glittery hair mascara and friend of mine were also big into the Mabelline matte mousse. I’m sure our parents also thought we looked a bit strange but it was just the look! I felt like I looked absolutely brilliant 😂 and that’s what mattered.
I imagine young girls are just doing exactly the same now as I did then, dressing and wearing makeup that make them feel brilliant.

Kranke · 24/03/2023 19:27

It’s just fashion. When I was a teen over plucking was in fashion - we looked equally as stupid then!

suzyscat · 24/03/2023 19:34

Perhaps we're too old understand?

@TheChosenTwo has it bang on and I bet she looked awesome. Even if her look then isn't in now (though I'm sure it will be again in 5 minutes.)

Suetcrust · 24/03/2023 19:35

Have to agree with Daffodillwoman. They look like those grotesque blow up dolls some men buy via the dark web and keep in their bedroom cupboard!
Men in drag is a good description.
I’ve recently caught up with a TV program where there was a young woman who looked absolutely awful.

Pinacalola · 24/03/2023 19:37

I mean it is fashion, but I think porn has intensified the look. Like shaved pubes, it's become an expectation as much as a fashion choice. And as much as I love getting glammed up and even the lashes, it is concerning how much porn is influencing young women. I don't feel the need to conform to all of it, but I'm worried my kids will if it hasn't changed by the time they get there

AllOfThemWitches · 24/03/2023 19:40

I just think that must be so time consuming

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/03/2023 19:41

Fashions have always been ridiculous as well as ridiculed:

i live in a city where this look is common. I think it’s mostly from looking for easy ways to make money : lashes, lips, Botox, tan hair etc are expensive to maintain even tho they look cheap. It also impacts those around them to start feeling like it I don’t do all that stuff I’m ugly or Plain

also reality tv and prob porn too

How does looking like this make you money though?

bellac11 · 24/03/2023 20:00

Just the current manifestation of the same old thing which has been centuries old and world wide

Im just watching Joanna Lumley in Japan, she's interviewing someone who is 2 years into a 5 year 'training' to be Geisha (or something that sounded like that because I didnt get the impression it was a Geisha)

Her face is plastered in white, her lips are fake in terms of how they are painted, she sleeps on a wooden pillow so she doesnt mess her hair up, sandals are unwalkable.

Theres nothing new in terms of how people dress and design themselves to extremes

Forfrigz · 24/03/2023 20:06

I think it's just an extreme version of what is naturally nice, some people think sun kissed skin makes them look nicer than their natural skintone but it's taken to an extreme. Long full lashes look nice but it's taken to a caricature extreme. As well as this it's a way of being ostentatious and showing off, it's expensive to keep up the look and so in keeping it people are showing off how much they spend on their appearance. In that way it's not much different to jewellery except these days it's more invasive with fillers etc. I think to some degree the fillers become extreme because people want to not only enhance their appearance but for it to be obvious they have spent money doing so. They want people to note 'she can afford to get 2ml of filler instead of 1ml' etc.

I still look like that. I plucked so much that they don't grow now and I am stuck with 2 thin lines.

HoneyPotBee · 24/03/2023 20:13

As long as women are buying into it the trend will continue.

Wotnowconfused · 24/03/2023 20:16

It has got out of hand a bit. Nothing wrong with some makeup but eye brows and lashes that look like a drag queen or panto dame certainly look ridiculous. Especially with orange skin and lip fillers.
It's sad that the younger generation who have great skin and natural beauty feel this is a look to aspire too and it's so heavily pushed in social media.

Inkypot · 24/03/2023 20:21

I can understand to a degree the hair and make up side of things, every generation has a dalliance with terrible make up but we can look back and smile about it.
What I find sad is the amount of young girls pumping their faces full of fillers- lips, cheeks- and the thought that they may never be able to come back from that.
To me it screams insecurity and as a woman it saddens me that even now women are still not confident enough to just be themselves.
The look you've described OP originated with drag queens which again makes zero sense to me. Drag queens are parodies of women, why would any woman want to look like a parody of us? Boggles the mind.

It doesn’t make money for the people who look like that but it sure as hell keeps people in business. Lashes are £40-60 every few weeks, hair £100 plus depending on what you get more for extensions. Tan £20-30 a spray , Botox is £150 and lips £50-100 there is now also tattooed eyebrows & lips. Plus waxing and facials
