The orange skin/fake lashes/massive eyebrows type of look…

Fake nails, fake hair, fake everything really… where does that originate and why does anything think they look good in it?
Yes I know, we are all free to do what we like, of course. But honestly, I find it so bizarre and truly ugly, nobody ever looks good with it, it’s so bad.
How does one become convinced that’s the way to go to look good!?

Would love to know what the oil paintings who are posting look like.

Awful would be attacking someone's actual looks- their weight, facial features, hair type, weight etc.

Criticising a cortina loon is not awful anymore than saying you hate a style of clothes is awful. Your fillers are not your face and every single person looks better without super overdone fillers.

The only way I can see anyone being upset by this thread is if they know that their fillers are overinflated or their extensions are a bit cheap.

I don't have lip fillers, extensions, fake tan or nails and wear minimal make up.
I just think that sneering at the appearance of younger women is spiteful, undignified and crass.

Nor do I, and I agree.

I also think that the comments about these women wanting to 'fit in' and 'all looking the same' are particularly ironic on a board which at any given time has ten threads about white trainers/botox/midi dresses on the go, but I suppose 'all looking the same' is OK provided your face fits (and for the record, I'm fifty and the day I even consider wearing a lovely tasteful 'blazer', the nearest person able has my permission to shoot me in the head).

I don't have fillers etc, apart from covering my grey hair I've never had any beauty treatments - not even a manicure and I agree.

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 25/03/2023 15:30

I think some young people are trying to look like the filtered version of themselves.

MissTesseract · 25/03/2023 16:48

I believe it is largely class related, social background, etc. A bit grim to take a pop at that, really.
Same with the flesh coloured leggings derision, it is the furthest thing from my own personal taste yet I take no pleasure in shaming or degrading those who choose to dress like this. They're human beings.

What I don't much like is that this has become somewhat mainstream, that the Hollywood/Karadshian tripe has pretty much eclipsed our culture at this point, which also includes much of what else is being thrown on to the capitalist, throwaway conveyor belt.

There's education to consider, insularity, social media use and and a deep fuck you to privilege and authority. It ties in with bland popular music, loud staycations, angry looking vehicles and fast food. There's no separating it from class, at least a certain contingent of it.

If you need to feel good about yourself, perhaps try meditation, a good book, or some yoga. Feed you rescued chickens, enjoy the spring light and leave them alone.

I've never heard of a mince and cheese pie, where can I get one of these wonders 😮

Not a UK thing, from New Zealand. They are ok especially after a night on the town.

Aaah so they probably even have meat in them then? I've not been to NZ but the quality of pie in Australia blew my mind and my kiwi friends professed theirs are better.

JaneFondue · 25/03/2023 17:43

Is it OK to sneer at older, richer women then or is that also unsisterly and misogynist? Amanda Holden gave me a fright on the cover of The Times today with her new, not improved face.

But I am probably 'jealous'. Or maybe I just think it's appalling that so many women are not allowed to age.

JaneFondue · 25/03/2023 17:49

I also don't think wearing a midi dress or dying your hair blue is the same as shooting your lips full of filler to meet standards set by the porn industry.

RampantIvy · 25/03/2023 18:02

I totally agree with this.

Well, I'm surprised it needs clarification, but, for the avoidance of doubt, no, its not OK to sneer at any woman's appearance, regardless of her age or financial status. There is however something particularly distasteful about referring to women young enough to be your daughters as looking like drag queens/porn stars. Not only because its so unpleasant, but also because it reinforces a stereotype of bitter middle aged women, jealous of younger ones. Which does none of us any good.

JaneFondue · 25/03/2023 18:12

I don't agree, I guess. I am not very bothered if people think I am jealous of a face full of plastic. If I were, I would just get a troutpout myself. I can afford it now I am middle aged.

Flesh coloured leggings, fine. False eyelashes: ugly but fine. Injecting your face full of toxins at 21: it's horrible, dangerous, and future generations will look at it like we look at the Elizabethans poisoning themselves with lead paint.

Rhombus79 · 25/03/2023 18:12

Well, I looked like Morticia Addams on a budget when I was younger, so I really try not to judge, mostly. My DP has no such qualms, he visibly shudders whenever he sees someone expressing themselve like this.

SocksAndTheCity · 25/03/2023 18:34

Even if some women want to look 'like porn stars' (and while I don't know any porn stars I doubt they're a giant homogenous mass anyway) that's surely their business?

If I decided to go out tomorrow and get all thus stuff done, who is going to tell me I can't (or at least shouldn't)? Who will we appoint as the Face Police, there to ensure that those too stupid to think for themselves or to be allowed to spend their own money on things they like in case it makes the arbiters of elegant good taste wince are steered in the right direction?

Forfrigz · 25/03/2023 18:35

I think what people find maddening is that the mainstream standards of beauty are very narrow and prescriptive and require soending money. What a lot of the trends boil down to (tan, long pin straight/ wavy blended highlighted hair, long lashes, plumped lips, very defined eyebrows ) is making someone who naturally looks quite bland a bit more interesting (not saying that's the only person who goes for this look but it is a large proportion) It means the people with naturally interesting features feel a bit overlooked as they get overshadowed by showy people who spend a lot on the upkeep of their various false features.

So, in other words, plain women should stay plainly in the background as nature intended, so the 'naturally interesting' looking women can be the ones to shine?

Well I didn't say that, did I? I'm giving my thoughts on why people generally are annoyed by these trends. Of course many people will attempt to improve their looks, it's just a shame there is such a limited range of looks currently considered beautiful (by many). Perhaps it's also a sort of laziness to have only one look to work towards, as it doesn't require much thought you can just throw money at your looks and the professionals will give you what they've given dozens of others that week. Sort of.makes everyone's lives simpler I suppose.

Me neither, it looks, erm, regional….

Well, I'm sitting on the other side of the world and can tell you that mince and cheese/steak and cheese pies (along with pies with any filling you can imagine) are plentiful here, so certainly not "regional"

Plenty of younger women sneer at the appearance of older women, both on MN and in real life. That's okay is it?

I doubt many people would tell you that you can't get stuff done. However, I've no doubt the majority of people would think it would look ridiculous.

Yep, we really know how to make a good pie - with plenty of meat! Not only meat however, I had the most delicious spiced chickpea and spinach pie last weekend - yum.

And they can think whatever they like, as can I (and I often do when I see some of the threads on here); since it doesn't affect me in any way.

There's a difference between doing that and keeping it to yourself, and starting sneering, snobbish threads or writing unpleasant posts lambasting the way other women choose to look or dress on a public message board.

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 25/03/2023 19:22

Pinacalola · 24/03/2023 19:37

I mean it is fashion, but I think porn has intensified the look. Like shaved pubes, it's become an expectation as much as a fashion choice. And as much as I love getting glammed up and even the lashes, it is concerning how much porn is influencing young women. I don't feel the need to conform to all of it, but I'm worried my kids will if it hasn't changed by the time they get there

I completely agree the nails and shaved pubes or no pubes, definitely porn. My (late) teen daughter does the fake tan occasionally but doesn’t do the eyebrow or fake lashes thing. It does make me angry that this shit is pushed out onto women, it’s far more extreme and expensive than an 80s poodle perm ! The pubic hair thing in particular I think originates from misogyny, female pubic hair=revolting

The OP expressed an opinion and asked for others opinions on it. I would never tell anyone how idiotic their trout pout/daft eye lashes/orange face paint looked unless they asked me.

No. Obviously that's not OK. But given no one has done that on the thread, it would seem a little unecessary for me to start challenging spiteful remarks about a group no one has insulted.
