To be fair @IndianSummer78 they were generally using the amount of stuff we use on our faces everyday either, spf, foundation, make up in general wasn't used as widely as it is now. Historically many people didn't moisturise and there were periods in history when the ingredients in make up for those that could afford it, did actually make their faces fall off 😂

In the past being incredibly pale was considered sexy, as it showed you could laze about indoors all day and didn't need to be out working the fields. Those portraits of queen Elizabeth I where she looks practically white is from the lead based make up they used to put on to make themselves look extra pale, it did terrible things to the skin and gave them lead poisoning as well!

If you were poor you just went without, no sunscreen or moisturiser and people did not bathe very often at all, think weeks rather than days! On the plus side, you wouldn't live long enough to worry about skin cancer, average life expectancy was 40.

All those childhood diseases we now vaccinate against used to ravage the skin too, before smallpox was eradicated it used to leave terrible scarring on anyone who caught it.

We are so much more 'beautiful' now but I think its more to do with good diet, vaccinations, and basic cleanliness. Not gonna stop trying the latest potions though!

@Pinktruffle I really want to try her skincare too!

@LivingDeadGirlUK I did think about it... possibly, probably... I am reluctant as not had the best experiences with Boots No7 in the past... but I guess that makes for a good video 🤣🤣🤣

There was a real hype around it so it could be good for views! Also on a more selfish note, I really want to see an honest trial before I splash out on it :P

LOL @LivingDeadGirlUK you wish is my command!

Another empty.

This was a freebie from TK MAXX. It was lovely. Absorbed well and wasn't sticky.

Love the MZ Skin serum - OBSESSED! Skin ever looked so good!

xogossipgirlxo · 16/06/2023 14:10

Hi everyone, can I join please? I've been secretly reading this thread, but never posted. I am expecting my first baby very soon and suddenly started feeling the need to declutter my house and my life 😂(from toxic relationships, content that doesn't work for me anymore etc.)

@Experiment627 I am tropic ambassador, clearly for my own benefit (aka 25% discount), they're lovely products, but some sales people can be very pushy, especially if it's one of your friends 😧Facebook groups aren't enough, they text you and you either have a choice to buy something/refuse/ignore 😂I love their products, they're natural and clean, but I wouldn't buy everything from them. I.e. baby products- so expensive! Or deodorant for 12 quid.

I quickly looked through my products and want to use up or get rid of quite a lot of stuff. I will throw away few nail polishes that are too old or I don't like colours. I am planning to use up sheet masks that my sister gave me, although they're not my favourite, as there's so much waste for just 10 minutes of self-care and they don't really do much for me. I prefer cream masks that I can rinse in the shower.

xogossipgirlxo · 16/06/2023 14:14

Oh and I just recently saw video on youtube with make up bag for summer- it was very minimalist, multi-purpose products and suddenly felt very inspired. I could easily pack cabin bag with my make up and toiletries. It's quite horrible actually. I'd rather have quick skincare, haircare and make up routine that works for me, especially when I have a baby.

I'd love to be able to do that but I find these multi purpose products tend to be cream based and I'm really bad at applying them and then keeping them from sliding off my face.

Experiment627 · 16/06/2023 15:03

Welcome to the thread @xogossipgirlxo !!!
Thanks for letting me know about Tropic - I completely get that if you like their products it makes sense to become an ambassador so you get the discount 💜

Hiya @xogossipgirlxo

Long time no empties but finally finished something yesterday - Brazilian bum bum cream. Smells a bit strong and sickly for my taste but as a body cream it's pretty much perfect. Will consider RP after I finish the current stash. Still hankering after the Barbara sturm one which was divine.

IndianSummer78 · 16/06/2023 18:44

I always used to cringe reading anything historical about the lead paint makeup, if only they knew what they were doing to themselves!

Think I need to stop getting sucked into all the incredibly effective marketing strategies to part me from my money 😂. Find a basic but effective beauty regimen. I've got the skin care nailed already really. It's the makeup I need to sort out for things without cyclones in it and that are easily removed without scrubbing.

If it's mostly diet, cleanliness and sleep then I need to work on the last one perhaps and stop worrying so much about tweaking my beauty routine.

Once my stash is used up I might start buying the occasional beauty box for a treat, but use it all up not let a stash develop.

I'm considering if I should embrace minimalism as a lifestyle to stop me getting affected by marketing. Are any of you minimalists? Maybe it's totally incompatible with trying new beauty products 🤔 and a stash is inevitable. Decisions, decisions...

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 16/06/2023 21:09

I am so into decluttering and minimalism that I want to simplify my life to do more crafting 😅. My husband is into bulk buying so it makes it difficult for me to organise and fit everything in a set space.
I am looking into using up all my things as I don’t like to waste anything but I find myself listening to sirens’ songs when it comes to the lure of trying out new products or the odd offer…@IndianSummer78

@xogossipgirlxo welcome to this lovely thread! You are in the right place at the right time. The sooner you start sorting your life out (beauty stuff) the more time you will have without stressing out with a baby.
I wish I had stream lined my life before having DC as I have to deal with their stuff as well as mine which makes me really anxious.

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 16/06/2023 21:12

@Experiment627 where can I find your expertise insight in the products you review?

Experiment627 · 16/06/2023 21:50

Hello all, I hope you don't mind an interloper. I don't have a stash to use up any more (unless you count red lippy & sheet masks), but have found your reviews and comments on various products really interesting to read while I've been unwell over the past few months.

Anyway, the reason for my radomly jumping in is, I wondered if any of you could recommend any K-beauty sites that aren't HUGELY pricey, and uk based? Once upon a time I did hugely enjoy exploring new products & since I have some time on my hands, would like to see what's about these days.

Thanks!

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 16/06/2023 22:25

@Experiment627 I am not joking 😉

Experiment627 · 16/06/2023 22:32

@lucysmam welcome! Hope you are on the mend!
K-Beauty is the great unknown to me...I keep meaning to give it a whirl and then get side tracked with something else 🙈 I think Stylevana has been recommended before for those of us in Blighty. Our resident K & J beauty expert @Fraaahnces can probably recommend some other sites, despite being based in Oz she basically knows EVERYTHING 😍

Welcome @xogossipgirlxo :)

no empties to speak of today but I do have a couple of purchases 😳
I had a few points to use up at Sephora so I bought the inkey list oat cleansing balm which I’ve been wanted to try for awhile, and an ultra violette tinted spf on my never ending search for the holy grail sunscreen.

with my points I got a skinfix moisturiser, ABH brow pencil and a tarte mascara.

I will now sit and look out my window for the next week until the postie arrives 🤣

IndianSummer78 · 17/06/2023 01:31

Thanks, good to know it can be done @Thereislightattheendofthetunnel . I only started decluttering this year so I'm a long way from minimal at the moment. No bulk buying DH here though, that must be challenging, at least I'm in charge of stopping my own bulk buying

I picked up some k-beauty stuff in Boots today @lucysmam . Pixi something

StarryNightAddict · 17/06/2023 01:38

I wanted to give my review on these 3 sunscreens from naked sundays as I’ve nearly finished them. I don’t even know if they’re available in the UK so feel free to scroll on past if it’s not relevant. 🤣

As someone with incredibly sensitive skin who breaks out in rashes with most sunscreens and avoided them for almost 40 years, I don’t react to any of these, so an immediate plus.

mineral 4 in 1 primer (green lid)
this is really sticky and hard to blend. It sits on the face most of the day and I don’t think suited to no makeup days. However, it’s a fantastic primer. Very similar IMO to the milk hydrogrip or elf powergrip. If you do wear it without makeup it is incredibly tone correcting and evening. This works better on my rosacea and dark spots than my actual colour correctors. It’s not meant to be tinted but it does have a high percentage of zinc oxide which I guess gives it the colour. Will repurchase.

serum (pink lid). This would be the greatest sunscreen in the entire world IF you don’t wear any makeup. It’s a true serum, sinks right into the skin, is invisible and feels like silk. However they’ve completely missed the mark for makeup wearers. The minute you put anything in top of it it pills like mad. I tried to give it to my daughter and she returned it to me swiftly while ranting about her flaky face. I’ll repurchase a tiny 25ml bottle for the very odd occasion I don’t want to put anything on top of it.

spray mist I’m so dubious about spray spf. I don’t see how you can get proper coverage with such a fine mist. However this actually gives the skin a really nice glow and I’ve sort of been using it as a setting spray type product because it just looks so nice. Don’t think I would use it as a standalone spf. Might repurchase a small bottle.

@StarryNightAddict love how your DD actually gave you it back 🤣

I have a non-related beauty product question... but I feel like there is major collective wisdom within this thread 🦉

I am on HRT and use Utrogestan pessaries for 12 days a month. I find that inserting them with my finger easier than using the provided applicators so have boxes of unused applicators - which are sealed. Do you think I can return to the pharmacy or give somewherr... such a waste of single use plastic. Will ask pharmacist too but posting on here just in case.

@LivingDeadGirlUK ah yes it can be a problem, especially in hot weather. I started to use cream products more since I turned 30 as I noticed my face can look bit dehydrated. Although I still prefer powder products on hot days, as you get sweaty anyway.

@Thereislightattheendofthetunnel I only have few weeks before baby is here, but better late than never, especially when I still have time. Sheet masks are on my radar for now, I could probably use them once a week, I don’t think I will have crazy amounts of time once I give birth, so I’d like to simplify my routine a bit.

For a good start I used up Superdrug hot cloth cream cleanser. It’s pretty decent and cheap, although I don’t like cloths they add. Prefer little face towels from Ikea.

Excellent @Fraaahnces thanks very much, I know how I'm spending the rest of the morning and my money now 🤣

I may be back with a stash to use up at some point...we'll see 🤔

Fraaahnces · 17/06/2023 11:09

Oooh, Stylevana isn’t my favourite site. Just saying that their customer service is utter shite and sometimes products cans take many months.
