Have you had your colours done? What did you think?

I always said I'd never do it as I associate it with women in huge bright patterns and chunky necklaces. No idea why!

But decided to bite the bullet after realising my wardrobe is just every colour under the sun

I was surprised to be a deep/dark autumn. No idea I was surprised tbh but I was

It makes sense now I think about it more but I definitely wanted to be a bright summer or something!

Interesting that I came out as cool summer also, on that app thing.

I'm the same in that in summer I have to warm up my foundation shade a little or I look washed out, and can then also wear slightly warmer colours.

The minute September comes however it looks all kind of wrong (even if it's still sunny) and I have to cool things back down. Must be something to do with the light??

@Puffalicious are you insinuating that I have somehow got your season ... wrong?! This is my reputation at stake here!

🤣🤣🤣

Not at ALL! Apps are notoriously flaky. You are the colour analysis guru! (Bows).

Lordy, I'm exactly the same! I tan easily (safely) and mourn my tanned look in Sep, but come the end of the month I've readjusted and chill being pale again. I'm in Scotland, so our light is clear beautiful, but it really exposes your skin and affects your whole wardrobe and mood!

There is a good Facebook page called Style Me Happy. Emily also has a website and does various packages. I’ve found it really good. I always knew I didn’t suit black. It’s too harsh but similarly, white isn’t good on me.

LadyEloise1 · 09/03/2023 13:00

@MokaEfti
What app please ?

I’ve just paid to have mine done with Emily Innes, but I haven’t received my results yet. I’ve joined the FB group and found it so interesting to go back and read all the posts. Some people have posted with various photos of different colour clothing and you really can see that some colours are stunning when it suits.

The most revelatory thing to me is lipstick! I don’t wear it generally, like most women I know, as it feels maybe too attention grabbing or uncomfortable. But a bright lipstick in the right colour (crucial!) lifts your whole face. I saw a photo of an ordinary looking women on this FB group without lipstick, then one with her asking if a certain colour pink lipstick was right and the transformation of her face was amazing.

A tip someone gave is to wear the lipstick around the house for a week or two first to get used to the feeling and seeing it on your face if you feel uncomfortable. And of course, I suppose have your colours done so you can choose the right shade to begin with.

Lipstick has been the biggest revelation for me since getting an analysis from Emily.

My eyeshadow/eyeliner/mascara choices were pretty much as advised but were "wrong" compared to much of the advice in magazines etc. I could never understand why gold/bronze/brown didn't suit me and have quite a bit that was rarely worn.

I have bought a couple of lipsticks I love, and one is a colour I would never have dreamed of wearing. It has also explained why I found red quite tricky, because so many are warm reds, if I get a cool one it looks great.

Same with clothes, I generally avoid yellow and orange, I have had one yellow top that looked great, it was only really by chance that I tried it because I thought yellow doesn't suit me but didn't understand that there are a couple of shades that work. I believed that green suited me, it does, especially bright emerald green or turquoise, what I hadn't appreciated was that not all greens give the same effect. I will also be wearing a lot more blue, purple and pink now.

BatFaceOwl · 09/03/2023 13:22

I went on Etsy and bought a little fan style binder of all my colours. I'm shan't be that saddo who pulls out t out when wandering round the shops but it's been useful to see my exact shades

Typically, there's next to nothing in my entire wardrobe in my colours but that's just tough really as I can't Chuck everything out unfortunately!

Same here, I would never have even tried mustard or beige, though once I borrowed a top that was sort of a golden egg yolk colour and loads of people told me how well I looked. That was confusing.

If your colouring is neutral it can be difficult to work out without draping (which I guess you could do yourself? but it's harder to interpret).

The cream vs white thing may not be straightforward, cream makes me look red, white is harsh and casts shadows. My 'white' is oyster, which is much less yellow than cream.

I always liked wearing blue - it made my eyes bluer - but when I was draped I could see how much better other colours were for my skin.

VenusClapTrap · 09/03/2023 14:25

@AdventFridgeOfShame You sound exactly like me. A long time ago, we had a colour consultant do a talk at my workplace. She picked out several people and did their seasons. She studiously avoided me, so at the end I cornered her and asked her. She said “You’re a tricky one. I’d have to do a full analysis on you.”

I’ve had some terrible makeup recommendations at cosmetic counters over the years. Sometimes I tend to look a bit sallow, sometimes a bit pink. I wear yellow gold, but rose gold looks better. I’m mouse naturally, blonde highlights are a tightrope - too honey is awful on me, but too ash and I look dead.

Looking at some self analysis web pages and I come out with soft or cool summer, or soft autumn. I’ve just sent off photos to Emily Innes so we’ll see what she says. I enquired with a local consultant but she is £250; not sure I want to spend that!

Reluctantadult · 09/03/2023 15:24

Oo off to try the app, I find this very confusing actually due to having sallow yellow toned skin, (unfortunately I don't mean olive).

Zoetrope1 · 09/03/2023 15:25

I’ve just requested a colour analysis from Emily. I think I’m a bright spring, excited to see what she says!

I like the sound of one of those. Shall investigate!

Reluctantadult · 09/03/2023 15:41

Alright so on that app, I got cool winter twice, and deep winter twice. And then randomly I got cool summer once! All from different photos! The balance is cool winter then I suppose!

Your personal palette
The Cool Winter palette contains lots of fabulous blues: Chinese blue, royal blue, navy and hot turquoise. Other cool and icy colors you can pull off include emerald green, true blue, magenta, fuchsia, frosty pink and icy violet. Black will look great on you, as it does on all winter types.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 09/03/2023 15:44

@VenusClapTrap we might just have to declare ourselves Soft Autumnal Equinoxes

https://theconceptwardrobe.com/soft-summer-vs-soft-autumn-what-is-the-difference

BatshitCrazyWoman · 09/03/2023 15:48

I've got very neutral skin, CMB I think works better for this, as it looks at other characteristics than 'warm or cool'. You get three descriptors (can't think what to call them!) and I'm soft, light and warm, but really that tertiary one is less important than my dominant 'softness'.

I don't have any yellows in my pallette, but I have teal, turquoise, olive, coral, claret, pewter, rust, chocolate brown... a real mixture!

CarpetSlipper · 09/03/2023 16:15

I keep wanting to do this because some colours look awful on me. I know I’m warm and had assumed soft autumn but now think I could be a deep autumn.

I have ashy light brown hair
light yellow tinged skin
dark brown eyes
no freckles and tan easily.

I feel I look best in olive green, petrol blue, plum, warm dark greys (light greys look awful), tomato red, navy. White doesn’t suit me but black looks ok. Any ideas? A cool leaning autumn?

Reluctantadult · 09/03/2023 16:45

@CarpetSlipper i only know what I've just read, but you might be a winter. Yellow toned skin is the same as me. Many of the colours you said came up for me. Try the website linked up thread?

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 09/03/2023 17:51

Remember when using the app or sending photos your phone might not give a totally colour balanced picture. Perhaps it doesn't matter if you are very strongly in one season or another but it might if you're more neutral.

I realised my phone camera made the deep green jumper I was wearing look blue/green, so would have put a blue cast over skin, eyes and hair too. On the app, I come out as soft summer unless I take the picture in sunlight, then I'm various autumns.

crispinglovershighkick · 09/03/2023 18:39

App is good fun. Makes me out to be a soft autumn, a deep winter, classic summer or cool summer. I used a few different pics taken in natural light. It struggled with my eye colour, which I think of as a dull blue. Came up as green, grey and sort of beige.

hennybeans · 09/03/2023 18:59

I tried the app mentioned above and it came out with two kinds of spring, a bright summer, and a winter. Depending on which photo I used, the lighting and where I clicked on the picture. My eyes are blue but I couldn’t get the colour to be recognised as anything but medium to dark grey.

DH came out as winter on the app twice which I think is accurate. But I’m going to hold out for Emily’s recommendation on me. Hopefully it will arrive soon!

nilsmousehammer · 11/03/2023 14:16

I've had a couple by different schools of thought on it. One - supposedly the all singing all dancing most expensive one - was a total waste of money and the woman doing it made it pointless and annoying. The two I've had done with House of Colour were both excellent, very encouraging and supportive experiences. So much comes down to the knowledge nd manner of the person doing it.

In the right hands, it can be such a boost. I went back to HoC a few years back when the middle aged blues were getting to me and my self image was shot. The consultant didn't do a full draping as I knew my general colours, but she went through the best shades of those colours and helped me see which ones had the best effect on my skin, she went through make up colours with me, and I'm not great with mirrors - especially at that point - and someone who'll sit with you and really help you notice colour and shade and reaction and the positives, I found that got me launched again. I lost weight and sorted my wardrobe out and it was the start of feeling much better about myself.

Lampshadeblue · 12/03/2023 22:57

@Fellsidefeather please can you DM me the details of person you went to see? They sound great :-)
