I always said I'd never do it as I associate it with women in huge bright patterns and chunky necklaces. No idea why!

But decided to bite the bullet after realising my wardrobe is just every colour under the sun

I was surprised to be a deep/dark autumn. No idea I was surprised tbh but I was

It makes sense now I think about it more but I definitely wanted to be a bright summer or something!

Saved me money because I would like the outfit and the colour, especially in the sales, only to have to put it on eBay for peanuts.
So first I look at the colour , then look at style rtc

Chocchops72 · 08/03/2023 11:06

Yes, my mum and I did several years ago. It was a bit of fun really, but I’ve totally changed my wardrobe as a result and given myself permission to wear bright colours. I binned every black item I owned within days and haven’t bought anything black since. I’m Bright Spring - so my neutrals are bright navy, cream, honey beige, caramel, chestnut brown. Signature colours for me are coral, turquoise, spring green. Coral and pink lipstick. And gold jewellery!!! This was a shocker, I’d always worn silver.

i never get so many compliments than when wearing ‘my’ colours.

@OffToThatPlace that sounds awful

@BatFaceOwl it was awful. The 'consultant' even said, without me even mentioning my weight, that I "could either go to Slimming World or live with it and style myself accordingly".

The "style" consultation involved me bringing over a small suitcase of clothes one evening and showing them to her so she could critique. Her husband was in the next room and could be heard becoming impatient.

The whole experience was horrible and didn't really teach me anything I never knew before about what suits me, colours and make up.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/03/2023 14:49

Ooooo just done mine, did it twice and its a soft summer palette or a classic summer palette 🎨 I will need to get rid of all my clothes 🤣

TheGirlWhoLived · 08/03/2023 15:59

@BatFaceOwl thanks!

Champooforyou · 08/03/2023 16:09

I've always thought I was autumn, but I've just used one of the apps recommended up post and it's put me as a deep winter. I'm really confused now 😕

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/03/2023 16:13

I was tonally analysed (CMB don't do seasons anymore) and I'm a soft dominant. I had an inkling, as I do look best in soft tonal colours (which aren't pastels, contrary to popular belief). I really did the analysis as a treat as I find that sort of thing fascinating.

LittleBear21 · 08/03/2023 08:54

@Fellsidefeather would you share her website/social media details please? I suspect I'm in desperate need of some help and live in that neck of the woods. Many thanks

I’ve sent you a pm. She’s fabulous!

FinallyHere · 08/03/2023 18:47

@Fellsidefeather

I too would be very interested in their contact details, by PM or anyway, really. Thanks in advance

I think some people benefit from getting their colours done more than others. If you have very pale Caucasian skin and mid brown hair, it can help you look less dead. I have a pale colleague who is clearly a Summer who was wearing a black blazer yesterday, sucking all the life out of her. I think if you have very olive/yellow skin it can help with looking less sallow. But in my view for lots of other people it doesn’t make a massive difference. Someone with very dark hair and striking blue eyes (Snow White) is going to look dramatic and impactful whatever they wear.

If you only buy clothes from a single season’s palette, you are already half way to a capsule wardrobe as everything will more or less harmonise. If you have every colour under the sun it takes more work.

I don't necessarily agree with this, my friend has jet black hair and vivid green eyes, very striking and looks so much better in winter colours

This sounds a bit like the consultant I went to see in the North about nine years ago.

I already knew I was a Spring as Id had a draping the year before so i went to the new consultant for my style.

She told me to bring a bag with a selection of clothes and shoes but on the day she said there was no need to look at them.

The day was basically her, parading around in a black vest & black leggings, while explaining about her body type and trying on her clothes and twirling in front of a mirror, showing me how fabulous her lipsticks made her look. I was left alone a lot while she tended to her husband and children downstairs.

I was left alone to figure out my own style from print-offs. She then came back in, checked my answer and said "That's correct." No explanation or discussion. I found her very icy. Terrible experience and I couldnt wait to leave.

Plantmoretrees86 · 08/03/2023 19:57

@Champooforyou I was exactly the same! Self assessed myself as autumn a couple of years ago and planned my whole wardrobe around that, but then after having my baby I was in a total style rut, so got a colour analysis by Emily Innes who's been mentioned up thread and lo and behold I'm a deep winter! At first I was doubtful, but it's definitely true. Think I was mainly just annoyed at all the beige and khaki I'd wasted money on haha. Gradually introducing more navy, burgundy, teal, plum etc and I look so much better. If you have clothes of different colours perhaps hold them up and see what looks best!

slithytoveisascientist · 08/03/2023 21:11

@Stinkypup from what I've read there are group
Workshop days available which sound fun!

AdventFridgeOfShame · 08/03/2023 21:21

I have warm skin and cool blond-mousy-grey hair plus deep blue grey eyes. Buying foundation is an interesting experience, I've been taken outside with a mirror at least a dozen times, my friends have never experienced this. My skin is yellower than anyone expects.

Using various photos and the analyse yourself sites I am Spring, Summer or Autumn. Always a soft version. I'd be intrigued to do an analysis , but I maybe I'd get multiple answers.

Am I just really neutral? I look good in muted secondary colours. Can wear silver and gold but pinky bronze is no good, pewter is great.

I think I am a fairly average British colouring. I definitely have a subtle grey undertone. Are there lots of us?

Puffalicious · 08/03/2023 22:00

MokaEfti · 08/03/2023 08:13

You sound exactly like me colouring wise and apparently I'm a winter (can't remember which exact winter as I only did a style day and at the end she told me I was winter by the way).

All the colours you mention suit/don't suit me in the same way, except for coral I think.

Ooooh you think? That's put a cat amongst thr pigeons 🤣

Was it one of the websites where you need to upload a photo or use live camera? The same thing happens to me. I think it comes down to lighting. IRL there is no question that I am autumn - my skin, eyes and hair are all warm toned.

Easiest way to check is to put white then cream against your face in good lighting. One will look good and one will make you look dead! White suits winters and cream suits autumns.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 08/03/2023 22:20

@Champooforyou also worth looking at the crossover colours that suit both seasons. Dark blue, teal, plum etc which suit @Plantmoretrees86 above also suit deep autumn. The two 'seasons' are next to each other in the colour wheel so there is some overlap and the experts would tell you you can usually 'borrow' from the closest ones.

vestanesta · 09/03/2023 07:30

@AdventFridgeOfShame that sounds very similar to my colouring except perhaps my hair is warmer. Overall I have pretty neutral colouring and going in I was expecting to be maybe a summer. That whole cream vs white thing is hard on me and the lady doing my session spent longer on me that anyone else in the group.

I am a spring - I suit high contrast. I remember when I first had it done and was poking about online there was a lot of us as, like you say, it's quite common colouring in the UK.

Could I have her details please ? I’m local. Thank you.

MokaEfti · 09/03/2023 09:00

@Puffalicious well I could be wrong of course - I actually tried that app that a PP linked to, and it told me I'm a cool summer (not a winter as I was told).

However I think the main thing is that you know whether you're a cool or a warm. The fine print after that isn't so vital.

If white looks great compared to cream/ivory then you are a "cool." Smile

Squiffy01 · 09/03/2023 09:48

@Fellsidefeather

I would love details to please I’m absolutely clueless about what to wear!

Yes I think that's the key part- white is definitely for me, but if I'm tanned I can get away with cream and black next toy face (probably cos my whole skin is warmer).

I did the photo thing and it says soft summer, but I'm not convinced. Many of the colours look right, but I hate purple/lilac and there are loads of them.

newtb · 09/03/2023 10:26

Over more than 20 years I've gone to Mac Thomsett in Gresham near Chester/Wrexham. I think she's brilliant. Am gradually sliding from autumn towards winter as I change with age. The make-up is really good, and doesn't irritate at all.

Update: new photo used in bright sunlight. I'm a Cool Summer. It probably seems right- loads of blues and pinks. Although I liked the OP's suggestion of Bright Spring and there's loads of cross over colours. I think I've definitely got even cooler as I've got older (51 now) and my hair is paler.

I think I'll go get my colours done, but this is a good guide. That lovely chunky orange with pink trim cardigan will go to my sister. 😪 Interestingly, feeling a bit under the weather and I reached instinctively for a favourite pale pink, comfy hoodie this morning (day off). I think I know what makes me feel better already!

Such an interesting thread.

BatFaceOwl · 09/03/2023 10:44

@Puffalicious are you insinuating that I have somehow got your season ... wrong?! This is my reputation at stake here!
