Thing is, the Cuillinan diamonds were an actual gift, so a bit harder to ask for those back. Who should own the Kohinoor?
India, Pakistan and Afghanistan all claim it. It's had quite the journey.
I say donate it to this happy group and we'll rotate ownership. Problem solved.

To echo king Solomon's mind set. It could be cut into three and be divied up between India, Pakistan and Afghanistan 👼

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 18/02/2023 20:00

Yep, chop it up and let them fight over it...it will be v expensive dust by the time they've finished.

AdaColeman · 18/02/2023 20:05

Iran and the Taliban also claim ownership of it, and should the U.K. also have a piece? That's six pieces!

Serenster · 18/02/2023 20:24

I think the Koh-i-Noor is just being temporarily removed from the crown, and it will be restored when the crown returns to The Tower of London

The Koh-i-Noor is staying in the crown it’s currently in (the one made for the Queen Mother when she was crowned as consort of George VI), it’s another crown that Camilla will use for the coronation. The one she has chosen belonged to Queen Mary. She had it specially made for George V’s coronation, and it would normally have been passed to her son’s wife to wear at his coronation, except Queen Mary was still alive and wanted to attend it herself! So they had to make a new crown for Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and that was the one the Koh-i-Noor was mounted in, and where it remains to this day.

Thank you, @Serenster - I didn't know that 👌

As I recall, Queen Mary broke with tradition by attending the coronation of her son as until then it was not considered appropriate for an anointed monarch or consort to attend the coronation of another. But considering the circumstances of the abdication, Queen Mary wanted to be there to support her son. And it's understandable that she wanted to wear her own crown.

You're right. It was in the documentary I watched last week. Queen Mary broke with a lot of traditions and in doing so saved the British monarchy when others bit the dust

Queen Mary was such a fascinating character. I think Elizabeth learned a lot from her.

KillingMeDeftly · 18/02/2023 23:24

Mary certainly had a fascinating way of acquiring any knickknacks she set her eye on! I don't think the late Queen learned that from her 🤣

Maireas · 18/02/2023 23:26

She was a magpie, wasn't she!
True, Elizabeth didn't inherit that trait!

OP posts:
KillingMeDeftly · 19/02/2023 07:51

Magpie is the polite way of putting it. If she hadn't been royalty she'd have been what MN likes to call a CF!!

justasking111 · 19/02/2023 08:54

The magpie habits were I think a result of her childhood. Her parents were quite shockingly profligate so her upbringing chaotic. If they hadn't been attached to royalty they'd have been up before the courts

SenecaFallsRedux · 19/02/2023 15:58

In one of the biographies about Queen Mary, I read that people she was planning to visit would hide their more precious objects d'art in advance because if she admired anything especially strenuously, she expected to have it offered to her. I think in one case, she left with a chair she particularly liked.

Maireas · 19/02/2023 16:18

Was that the Ben Pimlott one, @SenecaFallsRedux ? I also read that she was very affected by the fall of eagles in Europe, particularly the Romanovs, and she was always looking for "portable wealth" should they need to flee.

I'm not sure; I've read several. The one I still own is by Anne Edwards.

Pallisers · 19/02/2023 17:59

hopeishere · 19/02/2023 17:59

Mind you none of the other looks I've seen so far are from wowing me!
