I think you're right, and it will slim down the RF in that sense.

I think York is hereditary, it's just that Andrew has no sons to inherit it!

The York Dukedom is hereditary, and is traditionally awarded to the monarch’s second son, but rather oddly has reverted to the Crown every time it’s been granted.

Previously Dukes of York include one who was killed at Agincourt, Richard of York who was killed in the wars of the Roses (his son Edward IV also held the title then became King), one of the Princes in the Tower. Also, lots of the holders became the King - George V and Edward IV recently, plus Charles I, James II and Henry VIII.

Gooseysgirl · 11/03/2023 09:22

I was wondering if QC, Anne, Kate, Meghan, Sophie would be in some form of long white/ivory dresses for the coronation + tiaras/coronets? No idea about Bea, Eug, Zara. I would love to see Meghan in the Spencer tiara (although I know it would probably cause a massive hoo-haa!!) but maybe the current Countess will wear it if they are invited.

KillingMeDeftly · 11/03/2023 09:29

I think that was what happened at QEII's coronation @Gooseysgirl but it might be a bit too retro for 2023.

I think the Spencers will attend so that's that tiara accounted for. If Meghan attends she could wear her wedding tiara.

Gooseysgirl · 11/03/2023 09:51

@KillingMeDeftly maybe they'll all just wear their wedding tiaras, probably the easiest way to sort it out 😂

That oriental circlet linked to upthread is gorgeous - I hadn't seen it before!

You're right, and of course, the late Queen's father, George VI was also Duke of York.
It's just by chance it's reverted to the Crown.
I read that the King now wishes to keep it that way, together with Edinburgh.

@themessygarden fair enough😂

eggandonion · 11/03/2023 10:07

Can Charlotte become Princess Royal when Anne is no longer around...which must be a long, long time.
A cocktails and tiara event would be fun, they could toast Sophie. And let Charlotte play along.

KnickerlessParsons · 11/03/2023 10:08

Can new Dukedoms/Earldoms be created? And if so, by whom?
Could Charles make someone the Duke/Earl of Swindon, for example?

Maireas · 11/03/2023 10:18

We're nearing the end of this thread. I'll start a new one soon. Suggestions for a title?

OP posts:
Serenster · 11/03/2023 10:19

Yes, the Crown can make new peerages. This is mostly done currently when someone gets a seat int he House of Lords or becomes a senior member of the Judiciary - they get awarded life Baronetcys (so, Karen on The Apprentice is Baroness Brady and Alan Sugar is addressed as Lord Sugar - because he’s Baron Sugar).

Apart from that the last time I’ aware of that someone non-royal got offered a higher peerage was Winston Churchill. He was offered the title of Duke of London after WWII, but refused (not because he was anti-titles, but because he didn’t want to rule his son out of being an MP, which he couldn’t do if he was a peer).

Are we too early for Dust off your diamonds: countdown to the Coronation? 😀

Or Wessex Girl no more! Edinburgh has a new Duchess 🤣

👍👍👍

Oh I love that! What a great title.

I'm quite chuffed that my title over there is 'All Tangled up in Tiaras and Titles' which turned out to be quite fortuitous and fitting. I mean, it's always fitting where Royal Houses are concerned...but especially fitting this week with 5 'new' titles having been confirmed!

Sigh.

Maireas · 11/03/2023 12:03

I've found a great jewellery auction!
Also, a very touching moment from Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh.

That sigh was a wistful sigh. I like this group so much.

Ah well, it can't be helped.
(In case anyone's thinking, why don't you just get on and leave...?😳 There's one thread I'm on that I really wish to stay with until the end. Until that time I'll be able to lurk here a little bit. Hope you each have a lovely day!💐)

Maireas · 11/03/2023 12:05

Just stay for this thread?
I understand that you have principles involved, though.

Maireas · 11/03/2023 12:06

Anyway.
Comments on the Sotheby's auction and Edward and Sophie welcome.

OP posts:
TangledWebOfDeception · 11/03/2023 12:09

I can't. For the sake of my principles (damn principles!!) but also for my own health and wellbeing - I'm very bad at ignoring things and I get sucked into so many discussions I'm really much better off out of...I've tried and tried to only stick with this thread and a couple of other lovely ones over the past year or so but it never works and I end up unwell as a result. I already do feel so much better since I've stopped engaging with some people here. It's pearls before swine, quite honestly, and I need to stop doing it.

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/03/2023 12:11

Ohhh I just saw a clip. He seems so genuinely thrilled and happy. Bless him. They both deserve it.

Sotheby's auction, you say? I might have a little peek. Now have I got a few hundred thousand stuck down the back of the sofa, I wonder??

Maireas · 11/03/2023 12:13

@TangledWebOfDeception 😢💐

Sorry to see you go @TangledWebOfDeception but I understand. I had to take a break from MN a few years ago and now apart from this thread I only rarely post.
