The DoE isn't heriditary I don't think, otherwise it would have gone to Charles when PP died? It's one that only the Monarch can bestow IIRC.
James will be too far removed from the succession for such a big title too.

It did revert to Charles and he's now passed it on

paradyning · 10/03/2023 22:13

What are we thinking about Sophie's dress here??
I love the colour but can't get my head around the sleeves. Or the length. Although I think the sleeves may grow on me!
The Ukrainian girl looks incredible in her regional dress

Nice colour on her, but not keen on the voluminous sleeves!

MotherofPearl · 10/03/2023 22:19

I love how happy Sophie and Edward look in those photos. I agree that the teal colour is great on her, but the sleeves look odd.

SqueakyDinosaur · 10/03/2023 22:31

I would love it if QC had all the Royal women over for a raucous tea that segued into G&Ts and they got every single tiara up from the vaults and ALL tried them ALL on and shared them out, at least for the Coronation. You could have all sorts of games of drawing a tiara at random from the pool.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/03/2023 22:33

I think I'd like the sleeves with a different neckline. My sister wore voluminous sleeves to our baby sister's wedding with a square neckline and it looked great.

Good shout Kiwi. That sort of neckline would fix it I think

That would be fun. Camilla would be game but the courtiers might have the vapours. Where are they stored does anyone know?

Maireas · 11/03/2023 07:12

What lovely Instagram pictures of Edward and Sophie. I really like her dress with those sleeves. I've never realised before how much Edward resembles his late mother. He has her smile.

I like that colour on Sophie, she looks great.

I think the DoE title reverted to the crown (so first QEII now KCIII) and can be gifted from the crown not hereditary as such. I don’t think you can gift away a hereditary title- like William can’t give his POW title to someone else (even if he wanted too).

themessygarden · 11/03/2023 07:42

I really hope Kate gets something new for the Coronation and doesn't do a
re-wear or revise something already in her closet.

LadyWithLapdog · 11/03/2023 07:46

Why would you want something new? Most people don’t know Kate’s entire wardrobe and the coronation is not about her anyway.

It went to Charles when PP died but obviously he didn't use it as his PoW title outranked it. It only reverted to the crown when he became king.

I still think it's a bit odd that it's only a lifetime title but perhaps there was some truth in the rumour that Charles and William were hoping to save it for Charlotte. But does that make it the only royal dukedom that isn't hereditary? Archie will one day be Duke of Sussex and technically Andrew could remarry someone younger and have a son who'd eventually be Duke of York!

I've lost track but what happened about the coronation being daywear rather than gowns and jewels?

Maireas · 11/03/2023 08:17

It sounds as if the King wants to keep Edinburgh within the RF, possibly the same with York - so they're not hereditary in the same way as Gloucester, Kent and Snowdon are. Which are or will be soon non royal.

I'm confused about the dress code for the coronation.
Is it day wear if you don't have a tiara, do you think?

I think York is hereditary, it's just that Andrew has no sons to inherit it!

KillingMeDeftly · 11/03/2023 08:21

This is a fascinating piece on Lady Glenconner. What an interesting yet sad life she's lead. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/02/13/oldest-living-aristocratic-widow-tells-all-lady-anne-glenconnor-queen-elizabeth

Maireas · 11/03/2023 08:21

Yes, @KillingMeDeftly - I think it is, but I read an article that the King wants to change that, as he obviously has done for Edinburgh.

'Cause I'm shallow like that, I'm really only into it for the style 😏

Oh that's interesting. I suspect he won't do anything right now and the title will be allowed to die with Andrew. Perhaps it'll get resurrected for Louis!

Maireas · 11/03/2023 08:46

That was my thought exactly!

I think Charles might institute a general change that Royal peerages, once bestowed, are for the lifetime of the recipient only. Which I think would be a sensible move (and in line with how peerages are given out for the House of Lords, so not a new occurrence).

Whether he would do that only for new peerages, or reform existing ones, is yet to be seen. But it would mean York, Cambridge and Edinburgh could stay “Royal” for the future, which might be all they would need?
