The DoE isn't heriditary I don't think, otherwise it would have gone to Charles when PP died? It's one that only the Monarch can bestow IIRC.
James will be too far removed from the succession for such a big title too.

Serenster · 10/03/2023 10:16

I think the Royal family are quite sensibly mindful of optics on this one - the days are past when you can merrily create new Dukedoms for family members, and it makes little sense to lose historic titles out of the immediate family. If they keep Edinburgh and York as “titles for life only” in future they can keep the history and not look completely out of touch.

(Charles could of course amend the other titles already in use to take away their hereditary nature, too. I think that’s unlikely though)

It did go to Charles when he died! But obviously he never used it as his princely titled outranked it.

Im unreasonably delighted with this news! Edward really was a spare, but he and Sophie have been very solid family members.
Louise needs to be a princess though...

Spudlet · 10/03/2023 12:42

So hang on, skipping back a page or two - if all the senior royal women are getting to pick tiaras out for the coronation, are we talking gowns here also? So none of this coat dress and hat malarkey? Excellent!

I also hope these threads keep going - I don’t think I have the mental bandwidth for any further social media tbh so I’d be sad to see this one go. I totally understand why some posters are feeling the need to go though. Big hugs all round ❤️

AdaColeman · 10/03/2023 14:14

Camilla has chosen Bruce Oldfield to design her coronation gown, so it will be interesting to see what he produces.
Anne has probably got several of his pieces at the back of her wardrobe! Diana was a fan of his too IIRC.

Gooseysgirl · 10/03/2023 14:16

Honestly I feel at times MN can feel like a cesspit of hate (without going into details as this is not the place). But I just engage mostly with the fun stuff like this, and for now I ignore the BS and am staying put with my Belgian laurel tiara firmly fixed to my head 😊
I think Sophie would look gorgeous in the Queen Mary Fringe! I hope she doesn't end up wearing her usual ones...

justasking111 · 10/03/2023 14:21

Sarah is still a Duchess when you think about it.

The dresses will be rather like the state opening of parliament I'm hoping. I believe foreign royals are invited so the event should be a sparkling one

gluenotsoup · 10/03/2023 14:41

I’m sure Sophie will finally get her hands on a better tiara! Better late than never.
@Maireas , that’s a lovely thing to share. I think this thread gets lots of us through some tough days, long may it last 💐

It should definitely be gowns. But I expect they’ll be “Camilla at the State Opening of Parliament” Gowns, rather than anything colourful.

It would be fun to do a Should/Will list for their tiaras though. Like:

Camilla
Should wear: George IV State diadem
Will Wear: Oriental Ruby Circlet (my guess because it will look good with red robes, has Victoria & Albert provenance and isn’t associated with QEII)
Fantasy wear: Delhi Durbar

Kate
Should wear - The Sapphire bandeau (would look good with her Royal Victorian Order)
Will wear - Cambridge Lover’s Knot (yawn…)
Fantasy wear - Alexandra’s Kokoshnik

Sophie
Should wear - The Greville Emerald Kokoshnik (if our new Duchess of Edinburgh gets appointed to the Order of the Thistle it would fab with her green sash)
Will wear - Wedding tiara (urgh)
Fantasy wear - Girls of Great Britain & Ireland (lovely tribute to her beloved MIL)

Anne
Should wear - Queen Mary’s Fringe tiara (her wedding tiara redux!)
Will wear - Festoon Tiara
Fantasy wear - Vladimir with pearls (because she’d totally wear it well)

Maireas · 10/03/2023 14:53

Just a note re: Sophie.
Her wedding tiara has been remodeled and has a double band of diamonds now at the base.
She has 2 very nice Aquamarine tiaras worn on several occasions.
I agree she could have another, though!

@Serenster (and if it's okay with the keeper of the thread) may I c+p that to the other side? Would be interesting to keep track of people's bids/guesses and compare on the day!

DuchessOfPort · 10/03/2023 15:04

I’m irrationally pleased by Edward and Sophie’s elevation - good birthday present and doesn’t cost anyone a penny, but is a nice recognition.

I DO want tiaras - twinkling hard. Blinding me.

AdaColeman · 10/03/2023 15:30

I'm pleased that Edward has been created Duke of Edinburgh, as promised so long ago by his mother. His son James, previously Viscount Severn, now becomes Earl of Wessex.

Maireas · 10/03/2023 15:36

Good call on the tiaras, @Serenster !

The very first thing I though of when I heard this announcement, yes for Sophie to get new tiaras!

Eaumyword · 10/03/2023 15:59

Ooh pleased about D of E!

Sorry but I have to butt in with this lovely clip of Max dancing 💃🏾 Dancing Queen

ashtyler · 10/03/2023 16:13

I just love her

ashtyler · 10/03/2023 16:15

Lovely news about E & S. Finally!
Will Soph really get new tiaras and move on from the aquamarine one?

But they all look so flimsy to me. I like a tiara with a bit more heft.

Maireas · 10/03/2023 16:27

Brilliant, @ashtyler !
We do love Max.
