She looks like the Venus de Milo there.

🤣🤣

derxa · 19/02/2023 22:03

Carole here! Leave my girl alone!😆

megletthesecond · 19/02/2023 22:03

I've decided I like her look tonight. It's very jarring at first glance but it's grown on me and feels modern.

KillingMeDeftly · 19/02/2023 22:06

I think the gloves would've been better with a more structured dress, like the one she wore to the Top Gun premiere. The floatiness of the white gown just doesn't look right with them.

LadyWithLapdog · 19/02/2023 22:15

Kate looks amazing. I’m not sure about the gloves, they look like an afterthought because everyone else is doing something with their sleeves this year. But dress and earrings, top marks.

For me, Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Thompson look grand. Quietly elegant.

Jodie TS normally looks astounding. Not tonight.

I wis the POW had just gone with the white frock. No gloves. Yet….

Like others it really doesn’t look quite so startling on second look.
I’ll maybe love it by next Tuesday.

Whatever though. The lass could pull off a stapled bag for life and a plastic rain hat for those fond of a shampoo and set.

It is the smile and crinkly eyes. They are the best accessory no matter what you shove on.

MotherofPearl · 19/02/2023 22:18

I think the older women all looked more stylish - Cate Blanchett, Juliane Moore and Viola Davis were my favourites. Also liked Carey Mulligan's look, but appreciate it might not be to everyone's taste. Some real horrors on the red carpet imo.

KillingMeDeftly · 19/02/2023 22:23

I liked Florence Pugh's orange gown - it was fun and in keeping with her love of colour. Anya Taylor Joy though, how did she sit down in that dress??

hoardod · 19/02/2023 22:38

I love that Kate doesn't have the old fashioned fat curls. Unsure about the earrings as she could have gone with real gems, is it to look relatable? I don't understand how cheap earrings mask the wealth & privilege. The gloves though! they don't suit the diaphanous style of the dress, far too severe.

I love the colour & fun of Florence's dress.

Normally I love Jodie's style, like the colour & feathers on here but don't like the neckline.

Like the drama of Anyas but not the colour on her.

I really disliked Lily's dress & Rosie HW skirt thing.

gluenotsoup · 19/02/2023 23:19

I had another look at the black and white pics, I’m still not keen. The wrong dress for slinky black gloves. I can’t get it out if my head that it’s like a pair of bionic arms 🦾

JFDIYOLO · 20/02/2023 01:34

I do think Camilla's wedding outfit was my favourite of all the royal brides - design, colour, headdress all lovely

I agree - she got it absolutely bob on.

She looked magnificent.

KillingMeDeftly · 20/02/2023 07:12

It's not what I would've chosen but she looked good. Her wedding dress was similar to Sophie's, I thought.

susiebluebell · 20/02/2023 08:34

Well I love the black and white look. To be honest I didn't even notice the shoes or bag when I saw the photos in the paper - but I thought the earrings were fabulous. And I agree with @TangledWebOfDeception that a glitzy showbiz event might not be the right setting for the grand Royal jewels?

Had she not had the contrasting gloves and accessories we'd all be saying she was boring and safe, so there 😉

KillingMeDeftly · 20/02/2023 08:48

There is a middle ground between boring/safe and weird black gloves though! Any of her Caribbean gowns would've been perfect (though maybe not with the gloves).

KillingMeDeftly · 20/02/2023 08:49

I didn't mind the earrings so much either, they were a fun touch.

Who is Kate's stylist these days? Is it still Natasha Archer?

Eaumyword · 20/02/2023 09:14

Great to see the glamour!
I think Kate looks stunning - beautiful hair, makeup and Grecian goddess dress.
Like others have said, I find the gloves strange and yes, slightly bionic! Would have looked amazing with the black velvet column gown.

Onprozacandmyhighhorse · 20/02/2023 09:54

Does anyone remember when Diana wore a red and black evening gown with one black glove and one red? I don't know how to post a photo but maybe someone else can 😜

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/02/2023 10:00

She does look absolutely stunning (but then she always does).

She does get many, many points for trying something new and attempting a fresh take on old-school elegance. I think without the flouncy bit on her shoulder it would’ve worked much better - the dress in its original guise might have worked rather well, I think. Or the white caped Jenny Packham. And I agree with you, @KillingMeDeftly any of the gowns from the Caribbean tour. The emerald one would’ve worked very well, as would the pink one, I think (even with the droopy sleeves). Can’t remember any others specifically.

Anyway. Loved the gloves, Kate! And you looked fantastic, of course.

(Next time with a better dress, please.)

But I think I’ve changed my mind, it would be too much black with the velvet one...

See I think to myself when I see that, it really would have looked much better with two red gloves. But then I think it’s rather fantastic that she went for the unexpected (and hence, more interesting) option.

MotherofPearl · 20/02/2023 10:33

Some of the times Diana wore opera gloves.

It was quite an 80s look. The more I look at them the odder they seem to be!

I get what some of you are saying about trying something different, but I guess this is maybe something I don't particularly value with clothes and style as I prefer classic looks. Perhaps that means I'm not really into 'fashion'? Smile

KillingMeDeftly · 20/02/2023 10:50

Did Diana attend a lot more gala events compared to the royals of today or is it just that most of the photos of her that we see now are her dressed up to the nines?

Maireas · 20/02/2023 10:54

I think she did, @KillingMeDeftly - she seemed to be in the papers a lot. I suspect she was invited to a lot of things because of the cachet, but she certainly did enjoy them and the dressing up. It was great to have that injection of glamour!

ChicoryDip · 20/02/2023 11:00

I think the opera gloves work better with a strapless gown like the ones above where they create a nice clean line.

It's the asymmetry of Kate's gown that makes them look odd - half in and half out. And the black is very heavy against such a light, floaty dress.

However I suspect sales of opera gloves will get a boost this week.
