😂@MissMarplesbag, I still think it would look good with jeans, a white shirt and flats 😍

MissMarplesbag · 29/01/2023 12:56

It would look good with jeans but still needs a sparkler!

justasking111 · 29/01/2023 12:58

OH my stars what a frock

Ooooh, I am not gone on that Wedgwood tiara, 😯 it's reminicent of those magnetic balls my kids used to play with before they were taken off the market.

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 13:03

Yes @justasking111 that was one dreamy gown! Beautifully done.

I briefly considered it as my Coronation Day gown but I'll let you have first dibs as I hesitated.

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 13:10

It's actually quite difficult to find images of that gown! It looked beautiful in motion and sparkled in an absolutely wonderful way.

Speaking of Coronation Day gowns, @Maireas please could I reserve both of these.

www.unofficialroyalty.com/wedding-of-queen-margrethe-ii-of-denmark-and-henri-de-laborde-de-monpezat/

Fascinating how she appeared to marry down in the eyes of British royals. Only Marina attended. Hmm

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 13:17

Well yes of course she did. He wasn't royal.

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 13:18

(He wasn't actually nobility either, despite his title)

I love the gold gown, it looks almost medieval.

justasking111 · 29/01/2023 13:22

Well neither was Catherine, the royals overseas didn't snub them. The queen mother was behind this mark my words.

I'm not sure Marina would've attended if she thought Margrethe was marrying down!

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 13:25

It was an age ago. Can't be compared to the past 25 years or so.

Royalty marrying commoners is commonplace now.

justasking111 · 29/01/2023 13:25

Watching a documentary the other night Johnnie Spencer was quietly engaged to Lady Anne Coke. His father blocked the marriage because Anne had Bowes Lyon blood in her veins and they had imbeciles in their line.

Ain't history amusing.

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 13:45

A few more possible gowns...

Please could I reserve each of these as well @Maireas. TIA Flowers

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 13:54

Ok THIS is the final one! I also need the two lion statues. They will make a suitable statement guarding my sofa.*

*Throne? Do I need one?

I don't think marrying down was an issue. The Queen's own sister had married a commoner and so had the Duke of Kent. The Queen Mother was a commoner (although a very aristocratic one).

Historically, it was Continental RFs who had issues with marriage to non-royals. Supposedly some didn't attend Princess Margaret's wedding for that reason.

Still, it is odd that the British RF tends to send more minor representatives to these things rather than the top tier.

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 14:42

Oh yes I agree with you on that. I doubt they were snubbed for that reason.

TangledWebOfDeception · 29/01/2023 14:53

The Danish Monarchy is very minor compared to that of the U.K./Former empire.

When Princess Dagmar of Denmark (Maria Feodorovna) married Alexander III of Russia her family did not attend - they didn’t have the wealth to match the Imperial Court’s opulence.

mathanxiety · 29/01/2023 16:50

Catching up here - I love the red turtleneck and red coat combo on KM, and love the trews too. Agree W looking less full in the face.

I'm not sure I like the frills and flamboyance of Margarethe's off the shoulder ballgowns. The higher necklines suit her better imo.

Love Charlene's wave tiara, and the other sparkly hair adornment linked is beautiful. The Monaco children always look sad imo.

AdaColeman · 29/01/2023 16:54

Gorgeous, sumptuous fabrics in those gowns of Margrethe, you can really see the influence of her theatrical design experience, with the contrasting textures, the bold lines and use of colour, and the striking appliqué work.

Henrik was a bold choice for Margrethe, he was born before his parents married, and he was a Catholic. They met in London where he was in the French diplomatic service and she was studying at LSE, and they dated secretly for a year, before becoming engaged.
Henrik had changed his name and his religion on marrying Margrethe, but was never able to carve himself a valid Royal role, in the way that Philip did so successfully.

He was very intelligent, and a gifted musician and linguist, but spent many years of his life being disgruntled and disappointed at his lack of an official royal role, and his own place in the hierarchy.

I went down a Russian Danish royalty rabbit hole because of your post. It whiled away a few minutes of a Sunday afternoon and delayed my needed but unwanted walk.
