The British coronation is much more elaborate than any of the other investitures or swearings-in of European monarchs. For one thing, none of the others have a crowning or an anointing. Some have no religious element at all.

I think the closest may actually be Norway, where they have an initial civil swearing in, and then later a religious consecration. But it's still much less elaborate than the UK ceremony.

And when I say British and UK, what I really mean is English. The form of the ceremony is based on historical precedents of coronations of English monarchs (and this includes the presence of the Scottish Stone of Destiny under the coronation chair). The late Queen made a separate visit to Edinburgh after her coronation to receive the Honours of Scotland.

TangledWebOfDeception · 22/01/2023 19:01

Other forms count perfectly well in other nations/kingdoms/countries/whatever.

Here I want the fundamentals to remain exactly as they are. As long as the Monarchy exists it should hark back to history and heritage.

(My humble opinion, of course, with the caveat that I’m well aware that I don’t actually get a say!)

frugalkitty · 22/01/2023 19:09

Mess with tradition at your peril. My eldest DS still hasn't forgiven me for putting the Christmas Tree in a different place six years ago, and we don't mention the time I put coloured lights on the living room tree by mistake. It's a slippery slope.

Maireas · 22/01/2023 19:16

My father never got over Vatican II when mass time got reduced and the nuns got rid of their wimples. Slippery slope.

Speaking of which, even the Pope doesn't get crowned anymore.

I’m going to crown myself Queen of something or other on Coronation Day. Let’s all get crowns to mark the day!

XanaduKira · 22/01/2023 19:51

I'll be wearing one of my ~many~ tiaras. Probably the Fife.

@TangledWebOfDeception : proud owner of The Imperial Crown of Russia ✔️

I think that's a great idea.
We should put our tiaras on at the solemn moment the Archbishop crowns Charles.

@TangledWebOfDeception How big is your jewel safe? Do you have big men with weapons defending it? Wink

I think I want a watch for my birthday (51) DH has only bought my engagement ring and a teddy in the 20yrs I've owned him 🤦‍♀️ Admittedly the mortgage has gone and we own our one cars and teeth Grin

Opinions on this please, or should I get an eternity ring...

Open to suggestions from the experts. 💎

@Maireas I'll PM you as I've NCd a lot sorry Wine

TangledWebOfDeception · 22/01/2023 20:13

Ah thank you!! My collection is almost complete!

(who am I kidding...I can’t stop...)

Pretty please, @Maireas one more request...could I also have aforementioned ‘Jam Tart’ Tiara as well? I intend to have a necklace/stomacher/something else very fancy made with the rubies! It’ll match my new crown quite nicely.

Great idea! If the peers and spouses get to do it, so should we.

TangledWebOfDeception · 22/01/2023 20:27

Thank you @Maireas 💐

The official name is Princess Ashraf's Ruby Tiara, in case you need it for your records. 😊

@crosspusscrossstitcher tbh I’ve just been shoving them under my bed!

Note to self: Acquire a vault. Second note to self: No, you do NOT need a carriage. Stop it right now!!

A few pix from the NMR and the gram…

can I have CPV’s lovely hair slide pretty please. She has such a regal profile. The dress not a huge fan of the length - it’s a tad ‘12 year old at a birthday party’. Love Sofia’s dress.

our fave Single White Princess is opening a Danish craft exhibition in France (?). Going for a very, very low key look here. Sans coleur.

Princess Stephanie visiting a circus troupe in Monte Carlo. Am I imagining that she was once part of a troupe and toured as part of a circus?

Maireas · 22/01/2023 20:57

Those Bernadottes are good value, they love a dress up and are not tiara shy.
There was an anti royalist thread recently, and a Swedish poster said that their royal family were modest and low key! Nope.

Love Sophia's silver dress. I agree about CPV's regal profile.

I just looked up the Princess Stephanie/circus thing. Looks like she did join the circus for a while, I think in the late 90s. Apparently she fell in love with an elephant trainer and moved into his caravan with her children...

CliffsofMohair · 22/01/2023 21:19

When you think about Princess Stephanie has had a very similar experience to Harry. Losing her mother in a similar way. She seems to have weathered her childhood and come out the other side. I do remember my mother constantly talking about running away (from her five children) to join a circus like the Princess Stephanie…

frugalkitty · 22/01/2023 21:50

Tangled I gave a feeling that I bagsied the golden state carriage a while back......but if not I think we should just have it as a thread car pool carriage.

I'm not sure what I'll opt for on coronation day given that they'll probably be wanting my their crown that day.
