Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

Niftythrifter · 02/01/2023 12:00

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

I don’t know about rules but I dress to suit my shape rather than blindly following fashion.

StickyCricket · 02/01/2023 12:02

Cleavage or legs but never both.

Same as above, legs or boobs never both

snappynewyear23 · 02/01/2023 12:24

Not wearing blue and black together

Puffalicious · 02/01/2023 12:29

Yes, specifically never ever navy and black together. I'd do jeans and black or a royal, though.

Moonpies · 02/01/2023 12:46

Try to stick with max 3 colours in an outfit. I relax it with casual wear (hiking etc)

Shunkleisshiny · 02/01/2023 12:54

Bootleg trousers and jeans, I'm classic pear shape.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 02/01/2023 12:56

Black on the bottom means I have to have black on the top too. I believe it was Trinny or Susannah who said black trousers and a coloured top makes you look like waiting staff and it's stuck forever.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/01/2023 13:05

Don’t stick to ‘rules’ as such, but dress for my body shape. Don’t follow fashion really, prefer classic pieces.

Cellotapedispenser · 02/01/2023 13:09

Never more than two colours unless the third is black, white or grey
Never mix patterns
Bold eyes or bold lipstick, not both
But then I am a pretty conservative dresser these days.

dudsville · 02/01/2023 13:12

The only rule I have was adopted from kondoing my wardrobe - I only wear things that make me happy or feel good in some way or other.

Shoopdadoop · 02/01/2023 13:19

I agree with other posters about the boobs and legs. I don't put patterns together, maybe floral and stripe you could get away with. I agree with black and navy, I'd be putting brows with the navy and black with whites and Grey's, beiges.

Dressing for body type I think is a good thing. I also like the idea that we have a colour palette based on the seasons and what colour our hair and eyes are (plus skin tone pink or blue based or neutral). So if you are pale with black hair you might be winter and can wear red, purple and yellow well. Fair or red heads with pale coloured eyes would be spring and suit greens and pinks, violets, beige etc.

I can't wear fussy tops due to the way my shoulders/boobs seem to stand out. Wide leg trousers really suit me due to being top heavy. So I'd avoid skinny jeans based on the body shape I have.

I stick to one "texture" in an outfit too, so a leather jacket and not try wear anything velvet (not that you would). I don't agree with bag has to match shoes. I like an all black outfit and then different colour shoes (say beige) but I'm a bit strange like that. So I think it's having fun with it and not worrying so much about fashion faux pas.

Puffalicious · 02/01/2023 13:28

Laughing at the Trinny and Susan nah reminder! I definitely would never do black trousers and a block coloured top because of them. I will do black trousers and a patterned/striped top- do this all the time for work- I'd even do white top as long as I had statement jewellery/ coloured shoes so I don't look like waiting staff 😆

toastfiend · 02/01/2023 13:52

Wouldn't you? Blimey, I would - in fact, I did the other day! 😁

I don't really stick to any arbitrary fashion rules. I love clothes, to my mind they're there to have fun with. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, if I don't like the look I won't wear it again. I really enjoy mixing different textures together, I think it adds interest. I don't tend to clash patterns often, but I'm fully supportive of others doing it if it works for them.

I'm not wild about black trousers and bright block colour tops - mostly because I think it often ends up with both items looking a bit drab. I also wouldn't usually wear big dangly earrings with a necklace as I just think it's a bit overwhelming for my short neck/round face combination - I guess that comes down to dressing (or accessorising!) for your shape, rather than a fashion "rule", though.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/01/2023 13:56

I wouldn't wear a pattern on top and a different pattern on the bottom. Pretty obvious.
Blue jeans and black is OK for me.
I don't see what's so bad about looking like a waitress.

Vinylloving · 02/01/2023 14:13

Never boobs anymore (I'm 39 and just don't want to anymore!)
Baggy/tight not both
If baggy trousers tops usually tucked, if skinny/leggings it will be long and loose
I'm short and look better with rolled up jeans etc, so you can see a bit of ankle

Vinylloving · 02/01/2023 14:14

Don't like black and Jewel bright colours, always looks cheap on me
No big earrings
Of small hoops I tend not to wear necklaces, if studs I do wear necklaces. I guess everything is subtle for me

declutteringmymind · 02/01/2023 14:18

Only wear colours that suit me near my face
Only wear clothes that fit perfectly (it's tough)

47times11 · 02/01/2023 14:21

I agree on either boobs or legs. (I am a classic apple so tend to have good legs and a good cleavage.).

I never wear a necklace and earrings. Always one or the other. If in the day time I will wear a simple drop earring like a drop pearl. If in the evening I will wear more statement earrings.

Never mix black and blue unless it is broken up by another colour.

I never wear rings on more than one finger on my hand. I have stubby fingers so anything in the multiple makes me look like I sneezed in a costume jewel box.

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2023 14:22

Don’t muck about with your eyebrows.

Durango · 02/01/2023 14:23

Tights off when it gets above 10 degrees, on when it drops under

Never, ever, ever wear kitten heels

Pick your best asset and focus your outfits on that, legs, bum, waist etc

No scoop necks if you’re flat chested

No high necks if you’re big of nork

No pigtails outside of the house past the age of 12!

TheOGCCL · 02/01/2023 14:59

highlighting/emphasising your smallest/narrowest bits - wrists, ankles and natural waist. broadening shoulders and hips in contrast.

no black with bright colours = too 80s/licorice allsort. dulls the colour. colours better with something that can match the intensity eg pink with red or green.

take one item of jewellery off before you leave the house.

things in odd numbers are more elegant eg strands of pearls.

I don’t agree with no high necks with a large bust. depends on other body proportions eg neck, height, hips. Navy and black is classy.

GreekGod · 02/01/2023 15:11

No floral dresses ever and if I ever wear a floral top (hardly ever), the bottom half must be a dark colour

Black on the bottom means I have to have black on the top too. I believe it was Trinny or Susannah who said black trousers and a coloured top makes you look like waiting staff and it's stuck forever.

I’ve always remembered this too. I avoid colour with black. Black is classier with neutrals.
I don’t wear black boots with blue denim.
