What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

Never black shoes or boots with denim

I only have black boots, and I think they look fine with jeans. I don't own anything in tan.

What??????
They look absolutely great with denim. Maybe if your talking pale denim. but otherwise fine imo.
I wear black docs with everything!

RampantIvy · 07/01/2023 11:27

I only have black or dark navy denim and I gree that black boots/black trainers look great with them.

What’s the hoop earring thing about? I am curious because Fay Weldon (RIP) mentioned it in one of her books, The Heart of the Country. The principal character, Natalie, is deserted by her husband before a dinner party and her twelve year old son disapproves of her putting on a pair of hooped earrings. Is it because they were considered tarty or gypsy-ish or something?

Yes

My dm had that attitude towards ear piercing on children. This was in the 80s

She relented and let me have my ears pierced when I was 12 but friends were allowed it have theirs done earlier

Penguinsaregreat · 07/01/2023 17:12

I agree about the silliness regarding Women’s nightwear. I refuse to buy such tat.
Ditto underwear. I want plain, comfortable knickers, which completely cover me, you know the same as mens. I also want them to wash and wear well and contain some natural fibres.
I don’t really care who wears what.

Pigtailsandall · 07/01/2023 20:08

I don't really have many rules, but I do believe that a black blazer or a well-tailored wool coat rescues any outfit. I have a pile of graphic t-shirts bought in american thrift stores and my go-to is wearing them with a blazer and jeans. Even tatty old tees look funky and cool with a good blazer

Don't wear chipped nail varnish, make sure your underwear fits well and invest in a god handbag are my golden rules.

sammylady37 · 07/01/2023 23:25

My personal rules:
no animal print, ever.
no ballet pumps
no long fake nails
dangly earrings don’t suit me, unfortunately
no hoop earrings
good quality handbag, chosen to match outfit rather than the same bag used day in, day out

Just coming on to defend the cleavage AND legs look. I wore a plunging v neck minidress to our Christmas drinks and I looked great. The fashion rule is you're supposed to emphasise your good points and distract from bad ones so no reason why you can't dress to highlight legs and boobs if they are both assets.

Its not because you wont look good in it,I am sure you do. The rule I recall is that it is considered trashy, so nothing to do with how good you look. It is very difficult to look classy when both cleavage and legs are on display!

Ha, yes, I recall Go Fug Yourself (the very tongue in cheek fashion blog) renaming Blake Lively as Boobs Legsly.

Cantonet · 08/01/2023 09:12

I've always thought Blake Lively looks pretty classy in everything. She has a slim athletic looking figure. Cleavage baring dresses look dreadful on women with big boobs.
My personal rules are buy the very best quality coats & boots you can afford. That used to mean Maxmara for me, but now means Jaeger/Whistles/Jigsaw. Preferably 100% wool/cashmere with no polyamide in it as it attracts fluff like anything.
Always wear comfy shoes with stacked soles if possible.
Buy natural fabrics - Cashmere, Cotton, Silk, linen. There's no need to shop expensively for many of these, apart from Cashmere maybe.
Wear streamlined colours ie. All one colour as a base as it elongates.
Look after your clothes well. I wash a lot on a delicate wash with delicates detergent. Always hang your clothes up at the end of the day.
I love large gold hoops & leopard print & don't find either tacky, but really dislike long nails. Isn't it interesting how we all differ.

MistyRock · 08/01/2023 10:13

I really hate long nails too, which is a real bugger as my grow so quick and are really thick. I'm forever trimming them.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 02/01/2023 16:50

Never, ever wearing black with red.
It's not a combination I like but some barking loon of a woman once told me it's damaging to your aura, so there we have it, it's official.

Never wear three-quarter length sleeves. *shudder

why not 3/4? Was going to buy some more, especially for workwear...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/01/2023 17:44

I really like three quarter length sleeves. Most long sleeves are too long for me, and I like my wrists.

Three quarter sleeves are great in spring/summer if you like statement bangles, which I do. They are a great backdrop to an enamel cuff.

DashboardConfessional · 08/01/2023 18:14

Blake looks lovely! But there was a very specific era of this about 15 years ago. She doesn't really dress like that now.

Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?
tuvamoodyson · 08/01/2023 18:20

I dress for the body I have, not the one I want.

Good in Spring and Autumn

RampantIvy · 08/01/2023 22:13

I hate three quarter length sleeves. If it's cold I want my wrists covered. If it's warm I want short sleeves.

Oh. I don't care about looking classy. I grew up in the 80s and my fashion icons were and are Joan Collins, Bet Lynch and Madonna.

But thank you for your comment as it prompted the post about the marvellous Go Fug Yourself blog.

I love 3/4 length sleeves - I hate anything flapping around my hands. I have beautiful wrists as well.

And they are very flattering they highlight your waist amd make you look in proportion.

DeFacto · 09/01/2023 05:33

There are no rules.

You fools.

I hate the word 'Flattering'

I prefer to look interesting.

If someone wants to wear bracelet sleeves that's ok.

urbanbuddha · 09/01/2023 05:52

Blue and green should never be seen - I am not so sure about this one.

"Red and green should never be seen", I thought. And I agree. Blue and green work well for me.

RampantIvy · 09/01/2023 06:54

No, three quarter length sleeves just make my long arms look even longer. And my wrists don't need highlighting. I just want to be warm.

Post some photos of you going to work in a bikini. Or hanging around outside a primary school dressed as Gary Glitter. Or at a funeral in a cleavage & leg-baring red dress. Ther are no rules, you fools!
