Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

Niftythrifter · 02/01/2023 12:00

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

Never double denim

RampantIvy · 03/01/2023 08:14

Wear a properly fitted bra.
So many outfits are spoiled by wearing ill fitting bras. I actually don't need the support, but since going to an independent lingerie shop my silhouette is so much better now.

Again, going back to Trinny and Susannah I remember seeing an episode that showed a woman in a tight fitting top in a badly fitting bra and then in a properly fitted bra. She went from looking saggy and overweight to sleek and slim looking with a lovely silhouette. The transformation was astonishing.

As a jewel winter I get irritated by the advice to wear tan boots and a camel coat on how to look expensive threads. These colours just don't suit me, and tan boots don't go with anything I wear.

Elsanore · 03/01/2023 08:21

My step grandmother taught us- no black leather. Only brown, tan and sometimes navy for shoes, bags, belts. This really suits me and has improved my wardrobe massively.

Pretty much also eliminated black completely for browns and navys for clothes that would otherwise have defaulted to black like smart trousers, work dresses etc. Suits me and feels classier.

No double denim

Dress for your activity... I'm not going to pretend my combat style trousers with big pockets and a hoody, with walking boots is high fashion. But I'd look even sillier in expensive non waterproof trainers, fitted trousers and a thin top when teaching kids how to cook over an open fire ...

RampantIvy · 03/01/2023 08:41

Yes, to dressing for the activity and weather. I remember one particularly snowy winter when I would wear wellies to walk to the station and my flatmate hobbled down in stiletto heeled boots in 6 inches of snow. I strode down and caught the train that she missed.

Floisme · 03/01/2023 09:28

I used to have loads until I noticed how many book and TV deals the rule setters were getting, and now I've gone back to just 2: what I like and what I don't.

DashboardConfessional · 03/01/2023 09:32

No fashion boots between 1st April and 1st September. Ankle/knee/anything. Unless it snows in April, and even then you shouldn't be wearing leather non-waterproof boots due to salt marks.

Definitely the best rule.

Navy and black!

All lovely looks, I'm afraid it's still a no. All would look much better with the natching colour.

Each to their own.

The navy coat is lush.

Cam22 · 03/01/2023 11:25

Just to say black worn with navy is chic.

dayslikethese1 · 03/01/2023 12:04

I only wear my wacky jewellery with more neutral outfits. Don't wear dangly earrings and long/big necklaces together. Other than that, its just what I like so preferences rather than stated 'rules'. I don't like v necks, pointed shoes or low cut things or anything I can't wear a proper bra with. Don't like lots of embellishments on clothes either.

faretheewell · 03/01/2023 13:04

I don't do baggy top and baggy bottoms. If bottoms are baggy they have to have some visible waist definition. If I wear an oversize top I would wear a close fitting skirt or trousers/jeans. I aim to wear weather, especially rain, appropriate clothing. Pleathers are very useful for the rain! As are long coats and boots.

GettingStuffed · 03/01/2023 13:16

Leggings must be worn if dress is just below my undies

Is there anything here that might sway you? I can't find pics to upload as the pic upload feature isn't working.

Whilst I don't love the outfit, I do know lots of MNers do so here is another set of pics

At least one thing is clear, the rule doesn't appear to be a rule anymore!!!

I'm with you. I regularly take my kids to a working farm that's also a museum, we wear wellies and waterproofs etc but I see loads of women stumbling about in literal cowsheds wearing nice leather boots and a wool coat. Their kids also tend to have nice trainers on which just get covered in mud.

As an aside, I used to think I wasn't very outdoorsy at all until I married the worlds most outdoorsy man. He has gradually bought me lots of outdoorsy clothes and when I'm actually warm, comfortable and dry I've realised I love things like hiking, climbing and running outside. Its not the most stylish attire, but there's a lot of freedom in wearing the correct clothes for an activity.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/01/2023 13:30

No cold shoulder tops as they make my very normal sized arms look like badly hung hams

They're the face of evil on this planet

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 03/01/2023 15:33

A personal one

No short sleeve wool jumpers. Are you hot or are you cold? It confuses me.

Black opaque tights in spring or summer are also odd to me, as are boots in summer unless I’m in my garden, in the late evening, when it is actually chilly.

wfrances · 03/01/2023 15:49

I love black and dark navy

My personal rules are :
Earrings or necklace never both
Loose top & tight bottoms and other way round
I cant wear bright or pastel clothes
Knee length coats with short skirt & dresses
No high or polo necks

Divebar2021 · 02/01/2023 17:09

Where to these “rules” come from? I’m sure they’re great if you want to look middle of the road.

They come from a desire to look good, of course.

Are you conflating guidance about what looks stylish with old fashioned rules like ‘never discard thy liberty bodice ere May be out’ or whatever?

You must see that if someone wants to look attractive and stylish at e.g. the Cheltenham festival or Aintree, both of which are race meetings held during cold spring months, they are well advised to avoid cleavage’n’legs in a summery dress, right? Or that somebody conscious about their hips and thighs might like to wear clothes that emphasise other parts of their bodies that they are more confident about? That’s what guidance (‘rules’ if you prefer) is for. Most people want to look appropriate and attractive, and make the best of themselves, but it’s not mandatory.

Itstoocoldoutthere · 03/01/2023 17:45

Rules passed down by my mother:

Cleavage or legs, never both unless you want to look like a tart - tend to agree with this one.

Blue and green should never be seen - I am not so sure about this one.

Less is more when it comes to jewellery. One statement piece is enough.

No boots in summer unless you are riding a horse.

Florals and pastels are for spring and summer. Wear colours according to the season of the year.

Leggings should only be worn under dresses/shirts/jumpers long enough to cover your bottom.

Only sparkle at Christmas - glittery clothing should be saved for Christmas and New Year and then put away afterwards.

FartWrangler · 03/01/2023 17:47

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2023 15:19

No leggings outside the house.

Ha! Agreed.

Lottapianos · 03/01/2023 17:53

'I wouldn't wear a pattern on top and a different pattern on the bottom. Pretty obvious.'

I do this all the time 😁 absolutely love a print clash or a colour clash

I'm not a great one for rules, but I don't wear black (apart from opaque tights), don't wear heels of any description (too painful) and tend to avoid wide leg trousers as they make my bum look massive
